DOUBLE-ACTING LATCH.
Application filed April 28, 1926, Serial This invention relates to double acting latches designed to lock and release automatically a fixed and a movable member.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a locking and releasing latch capable of functioningl automatically with the open- Figure 1, shows a. front view of` the latch in the releasing' position.` Figure 2, is a side view of thel latch in the-position shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3v is a sectional view of the latchAv as shown in Figures 1.and 2.
Figure 4, shows in sectionthe latch inthe latching position; and
Figure.5, is a section of the shaft which supports the-spring latching mechanism.' i Considering Figures 1 to 5 of the drawings, there is shown'a movable wallmember 1` provided with a handle P and a fixed member 2 provided with a U-shaped member 17. The vlatching mechanism comprises'a base 3 screwed, bolted lor otherwise attached to member 1, a mounted, prefera ly, integrally on .base 3, a bar 20'extending b etween members Gand fastened tothe latter by means of suitable nuts or by being made in the formA ofa bolt lhaving a head 7 and a -fasteni'ng'nut 7, A .set of sleeves 21, 23, 23 and .washers 24, .24 are mounted on bar 20, wl 1ich carries a latching member 9 having a longitudinal slot 19 therein and a transverse bar 22 at one end from which .springs 10 extend to bar20. n
'Theend oflatching member 9 is designed provide with a pair of projections 9, 9?
limiting` av recess 26. A detlectinglmember.
elements cooperate to. lock Aand to release the fixed and .movable members is as vfollows Startingfrm the positlOn Shown inFigure's- 1to'3,thatis toj withlatc' vmember fix member -9 downwa y toward air of lateral member'sti to enga e the U-shaped member 17V and No. 105,324, and 11i-France nay '13, 1925.
2 and assuming that pressure is exerted downwardly on handle 1", U-shaped member 17 will move into the space between base 3 and deflectin member 18 and, under the 'guidance of t e latter, will approach recess 26. As soon as member 17 arrives opposite boss 25,'it will be deflected linto recess 26. Continued pressure on handle P will now cause the latching member 9. to move toward a horizontal position against the action of Springs 10. As soon Aas member 9 passes the dead point i. e. the exactly horizontal position, spring 1()A will tend to` force the latching 'member into the position shown in Figure 4 and member 1 w ill bev brought firmly into contact with member 2. The movements necessary to release members 1 and 2 fromone another take place in therey verse-order to those described for the latch- 4ing operation and need not therefore be described. f t From the foregoing description, it will be clear that there is here provided a mechanism for automatically latching and releasing a pair of members by simply movi one of the members toward or away from t e other. The invention is thought to be particularly applicable to the hoods of automobile engines or to similar construction where it isdesired to latch two members together by simply bringing. one down forcefullyon the other.
The invention -isnot however to lbe c on-v sidered as being limited to such uses but may be employedas. well on roll-top desks, onA
windows, on shutters and v'for any desired latching purpose. .A
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to per*- formed, I declare that what I claimgis f'. 1. In a double acting latch, a fixed .'latch member, a base having wings supportln a transverse pivot, a slotted latchfmem er 4mounted upon said pivot andA provided at its. free end with a seat, 'a spring extending from the opposite end of said latch to saidpivot to -proJect the latch into contact with .the base, a hasp 4member to travel parallel fwith said base' and to enter said seat for retention therein when the latch is shiftedto locked position,-a guide wallupon said wings, anda projectionA -upon theubase Vopposite said seat when the latch 1s .in open position and d' posed to direct said hasp memberintosaidseat.' .vg
2. Ina doubleacting l tch, aiixed'latch member, base-having wings projected laterally therefrom, a transverse pivot connecting said wings, a movable latch having a slot mounted upon said pivot, means connecting said latch-with the base for projecting the i latch into contact therewith, a seat at the end of 'thelatch next the base adapted to receive `4 and retain' the lfixed latch member against lateral displacement, an. inclined guide at the lower portion of said Wng'sra'nd a projection 10 upon the inner face of the base disposed in alignment with said seat when the latch is in open position. A
In testimony whereof I aix my signature. v
