SPRING LATCH Filed April 11, 1927 BY Thai) 6 ATTORNEY Patented dune 26,, 192%.
' u irsn EJPPIING LATCH.
Application filed April 11, 1327. Serial No. 1%,561).
This invention relates to spring holts'ifor latching doors and thelike closure.
Among the objects of the invention is to generally improve the construction of spring ltl bolts of the character described so as to provide a device comprising few and simple parts, which are readily assembled to form a rugged structure, which shall be cheap to manufacture, and practical and eficient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in parts hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction'hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the follow ing claims. A
In the accompanyingdrawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view showing a spring bolt embodying the invention ap plied to a do or.
Figs. 2 and 3 are cross-sectional views taken on lines 22 and 3-3 in Fig. 1, respectively,
Fig.4 is a front elevational view showing the bolt in retracted position.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 10 denotes a spring bolt embodying the invention, and is here shown mounted on a side oil a door 11 and door frame 12 for latching the door in closed position, only a fragmentary portion of the door 11 and door frame 12 being shown.
The spring bolt 10 is seen to comprise a casing 13 having extension flanges 13' which form the mountingbase for the casing, suit-- able "hastening nieanssuoh as spaced screws 14 being extended through said flanges for rigidly securing said casing in position. End walls 13 of the casing 13 form bearings through which a latch bar 15 for latching the door is slidably and rotatabiy mounted, the front or leading end 15 of said bar 15 being adapted to be projected into a suitable socket member or keeper 1%, the latter being firmly secured to the door frame 12 by suitable means such as screws 17 pas ing through the flange base 16% of said keeper, as is clearly shown in Figs 1 and 2. v
To conveniently actuate the latch par 15, a pin 18 is securely mounted a m1d-portion of the bar 15 so as to extend transversely thereof through a suitable slot 13 provided in the casing 13. The slot 13 may be T-shaped and'so formed that when the bar 15 is retracted, the pin 18 we be swung either up or down, as is clear 'rom Figsl and d. The pin 18 may be riveted or otherwise firmly secured to the'har 15 and has its extended portion 18 threaded and terminated with a head 18". A cylindrical clamping finger-nut 19 is rotatably mounted on said threaded portion 18 and the casing 13 may have a flattened portion 13 adjacent the front end of the slot- 13 against which the nut 19 is adapted to seat for positively retaining the latch bar 15 in its extended position. A suitable compression spring 20 may be fitted over the rear end 15 of the bar 15 within the casing 13, said spring having one end thereof abut-ting the rear wall of casing 13. A. washer is interposed between the other end of said spring and the pin 18 to .torm an even hearing support for said spring end. (See Figs. 2 and 3.) y
The rear bar end 15* extending through thecasing may be provided with a head15 to limit the forward movement of the bar and to eliminate any possible strain on the pin 18 when the bar 15 is projected torwardly, the slot 13 being extended to provide a clearance for the pin .18 at its forward end 13 when the head 15 abuts the end wall of the casing 13, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2. v The operation or? the improved device will now be clear. With the latch bar'retracted as shown in Fig. 4 to project said bar 15, the
finger-nut 19 is turned to move outwardly on the threaded pin portion 18 the head 18 preventing the accidental removal oi? said nut from the pin. The pin is then swung from its substantially vertical to a horizontal. position. The spring then being in compression projects the bar into the socket member or keeper 16. The finger nut is next rotated to seat on the flattened casing portion 13 for securing the bar 15 in its projected position. it should be noted that the bar cannot be retracted by any s i ing or rotary movement thereof until the linger-nut 19 is released from its seat, thus providing against unauthorized retraction of the bar for releasing the bolt from the side or the door opposite that on which said bolt is mounted.
