T his invention relates to packing and storing vessels and has special reference to a doubie walled shipping container.
One importance object of the invention is to provide an improved general arrangement of device of this character, the arrangement being such that the device is peculiarly adapted for shipping liquids wherein the temperature must'be maintained during the shipping and for a time thereafter the device also being adapted for the shippin of'such material as ice cream, water ices ant? the like.
A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved form of double sealed closure for vessels of this description, both the vessel and the closure being double walled'so that a dead air or vacuum space is provided between the two walls.
W ith the above and other objects in View as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details o1 constructionand combinations'of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like'parts in the several views, and;
Figure 1 is a vertical section taken diametrically through container as constructed in accordance with this invention, the central part Of the container being vertically broken away to permit the use of a large scale in showing the invention.
Figure 2 is a plan View of the container with the top swung to open position.
In the embodiment of the invention as here disclosed it will be seen that the container is provided with a body portion having a cylindrical inner will 10 and :1 cylindrical outer wall 11, these walls being spaced from each other to provide a dead air or vacuum space 12. The outer wall has an upwardly bumped bottom 13 and on this bottom rests the lower edge of the inner wall 10, this wall being properly secured to the bottom as by welding, soldering, brazing or the like. Above the bottom 13 the inner wall supports a false bottom 14 which is firmly secured to the inner wall and pro vides a dead air or vacuum space 15 between the bottoms 13 and 14. This space communicates with the space 12 through openings 16 formed in the lower end of the inner wall. 'lhe walls 10 and 11 are provided with annular separators 17 having openings 18 therein so that free communication is had betweenall of the space between the walls 10 and 11 and bottoms 13 and 14. Surrounding the top edge of the inner wall 12 is 'a trough 19 and from the outer edge o f this trough the'metal is continued upwardly and outwardly in frusto-c'onical form as at 20 to constitute a closure seat. At the top of this seat there is a lateral flange 21 which connects with the outer wjallll. By this means the top of the space 12 is closed. Also the trough 19 provides means for supporting an elastic gasket 22 preferably of rubber or other like material and of circular cross-section, this gasket 22 is held in the trough 19 reason of the trough having a cross-section greater than a semi-circle. Also the ring or gasket 22 projects out of the trough. Fixed near the top at one side is a hinge member 30 to the upper part of which is pivoted a hinge strip 31 which runs across the top of the closure and pro jects as at 32 for engagement by the swinging latch member 33 pivoted to a plate 34 secured opposite the plate 30.
In use the vessel of ordinary construction containing the material to be shipped is placed in the container as shown at 35 and the top closed. Since the arrangement of the locking device is such that when the plate 33 engages the end 32 the closure will be forced down to its seat it will be seen that when the vessel is closed the lower peripheral portion of the closure will compress the gasket 22 while the rib 23 will be forced into the gasket 29.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is: 1
1. In a container, a body open at the up per end and having an inverted frusto-conical closure seat at said upper end, a packing gasket carried by the body at the lower end of said seat, said gasket being secured to said body to prevent accidental detachment thereof, an inverted frusto-conical closure fitting in said seat and engaging the gasket with the peripheral portion of its lower end, a second gasket disposed between the upper portion of the closure and the top of said body and secured to the upper portion of said closure, and a rib carried by the other part and engaging the second gasket to compress the gasket on the line of the rib upon the body being closed by said closure.
2. In a container, a body having an inner wall and an outer wall spaced from said inner wall, means to close the top of the space between said walls including an annular trough extending around the periphery of the inner wall and an inverted frustoconical closure seat leading upwardly from the outer edge of said trough and connected to the top of the outer wall, a hollow inverted frusto-conical closure fitting in the seat, a compressible gasket fitting in said trough and projecting above the trough for engagement by the lower peripheral portion of the closure, said gasket being surrounded for more than one-half its cross section by said trough, and a second compressible gasket between the upper part of the closure and the top of the body.
3. In a container, a body having an inner wall and an outer wall spaced from said inner wall, means to close the top of the a space between said walls including an annular trough extending around the periphery of the inner wall and an inverted frustoconical closure seat leading upwardly from the outer edge of said trough and connected to the top of the outer wall, a hollow in verted frusto-conical closure fitting in the seat, a compressible gasket fitting in said trough and engaged by the trough over more than one-half its cross section and projecting above the trough for engagement by the lower peripheral portion of the closure, at second compressible gasket between the upper part of the closure and the top of the body and carried by one of said parts, and a rib carried by the other part and engaging the second gasket to compress the gasket on the line of the rib upon the body being closed by said closure.
