CHALK HOLDER.
Application filed July as, 1927. Serial No. 209,115.
This invention relates to a chalk-holder for use with billiards and of the kind wherein the holder is adjustably arranged in a casing within which the chalk is normally retracted by means of a spring so as to be protected when not in use.
The object of the present invention is to obviate the necessity of holding the chalk in extended position by means of a finger in opposition to the spring when a cue is being chalked, and the invention consists in the provision of a spring catch or catches adapted to come into operation after a partialdepression of the holder for retaining the chalk in extended position and to be released from the holder after a con'iplete depression of the latter.
Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings represents a sectional view of the device showing the elements in their normal position,
Fig. 2, a similar View showing the chalk extended for use,
Fig. 3, another sectional view showing the chalk holder completely depressed, and
Fig. 4, atop view of the device.
The chalk holder has the form of a cross 7 the arms of which are bent over and adapt-- ed to grip the chalk 2 resiliently. The holder is guided within a square, bell-shaped casing 1 and carries a screw-spindle 6 whereby it is adjustably connected to the stem 5 of an actuating knob 4, the latter being guided by means of the stem in an aperture in the end wall 3 of the casing. Corner brackets 10 which are secured to the inside of the casing and situated between the arms of the holder, support a conical spiral spring 8 which bears against a shoulder 9 on the stem 5 and which therefore tends to retain the holder with the chalk 2 in retracted position inside the casing. The stem 5 is provided with catches in the form of blade springs 12 and 12 which are accommodated in recesses 11 and 11 and adapted to snap behind the casing wall, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to retain the chalk in extended position foruse. This position is arrived at by a partial depression of the knob 4. The stem has also a collar or washer 13 which is adapted to he slid over the spring catches so as to press them back into the recesses 11, 11 as shown in Fig. 3 and allow them to pass freely through the casing. The collar 13 is situated between the wall 3 and a bridge 14: secured to the latter. When the knob 4. is fully depressed, the collar 13 is engaged by the bridge let and pushed over the catches so as to enable the holder to return to the position shown in Fig. 1. However, before the knob reaches the end position, the collar is engaged by the wall 3 and restored by the latter to the inoperative position so that the catches can again come into operation at the next partial de pression of the knob.
By a rotary adjustment of the knob l in the casing, the holder, which is prevented from participating in'this movement, can be adjusted relative to the casing so as to compensate for the wear of the chalk.
I claim:
1. The combination with a chalk-holder, of a casing wherein said holder is adjustable for extending the chalk into operative position and for retracting it within the casing,
. a spring acting on the holder for retracting the chalk, an actuating knob connected to the holder, a catch adapted to lock the holder in extended position after a partial depression of said knob, and means for releasing said catch on a complete depression of the knob. v
2. The combination with a chalk-holder, of a bell-shaped casing wherein said holder .is adjustable for extending'the chalk into operative position and for retracting itinto the casing, a spring acting on the holder for retracting the chalk, an actuating knob having a stem whereby it is connected to the holder and whereby it is guided in an aperture in the end wall of the casing, spring-catches on the stem of the knob adapted to slip through the aperture in the casing when the knob is depressed and to engage the casingat the opposite side for holding the chalk in extended position, a. collar arranged to slide on the stem and adapted to be pushed over said catches for holding them in inoperative position, and abutm-ents on the casing adapted to push the collar over the catches on the complete depression of the knob andto disengage it from the same when the'knob is released.
3. The structure claimed in claim 2 and a screw-spindle forming the connection between the holder and the actuating knob and allowing of adjustment for varying the position of the chalk relative to the casing.
