i "S ATE S JOHN MAURER, or LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINATION FASTENER.
Application filedMarch 4, 1927. Serial NO. 172,733. I
This invent-ion relates to door stops and aims 'to "provide novel means whereby a door may be held in a partially opened position, eliminating any possibility of the door being closed accidentally.
An important object of the invention is V to provide a device of this character which will efiiciently act as a door check,a'nd'one which will be invisible when not in use, to theend that the door check will not in any way marthe beauty, or break the lines of the door to which the check is secured.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a door equipped with a check constructed in accordance with the invention, the check being moved to its active position.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the control arm connected with the check.
Figure 3 is a fragmental sectional view through one portion of the door, showing the check in its inactive position.
Figure 4 is a fragmental front elevational view of a door and check.
Figure 5 is a fragmental perspective View illustrating one end of the door check.
Figure 6 is a perspective view illustrating a door check made of a single length of metal.
Figure 7 is a sectional View through a portion of a door and illustrating a modified form of the invention.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the modified form of the invention, the barrel thereof being partly broken away.
Referring to thedrawings in detail, the reference character 5 indicates a door, which is of the usual construction, and which has its forward lower edge cut away as clearly shown by Figure 3 to provide a groove 6 and a compartment 7 in which the door check forming the essence of the present invention is positioned.
The door check includes a main or body portion 8 constructed of a length of spring metal, one end thereof being secured within a groove formed inthe' lower edge of the door, the forward endof the body portion 8, terminating at a point adjacent to the front edge of the door where it is'supplied with a V pad 10 constructed of rubber or other friction material.
The reference character 11 indicates a spring arm that has a right angled end portion 12 formed with an-opening to receive thescrew'13 to which the pad 10 is secured. Th'isarm 11 is provided with an oifset -p0r-' tion 14 formed substantially centrally thereof, which offset portion is slightly curved as clearly shown by. Figure 3 defining a shoulder to be fitted over the upper edge of the metallic support 15 that provides a finishing structure for the compartment in which the arm 11 moves.
At the upper end of the arm 11 is an ofisct portion 16 terminating in an upwardly extended finger piece 17 the offset portion 16 providing a shoulder to be engaged by the fingers of the person operating the device.
Should it be desired to provide a device of this character wherein the arm 11 may be operated from the front of the door, it will be seen that the arm may be moved to a position as shown in dotted lines in Figure 5, whereupon the arm 11 may operate in an opening formed in the front surface of the door. A stud such as indicated at 10 and having a threaded end 11' may be used for securing the arm 11 to the body portion 8 which stud may be positioned in a suitable recess in the floor to lock the door against movement.
As shown by Figure 6, the body portion, which is indicated at 19 may be formed integral with the arm 20 by bending a length of spring metal in a manner as shown.
In this showing, a pad 21 is provided, and the arm is formed with offset portions 22 and 23 corresponding with the offset portions of the arm as previously described and to accomplish purposes as previously described. 7 v
From the foregoing it will be seen that when the arm is moved to a position as shown in full lines inFigure 3 of the drawings and the shoulder 22 is positioned over the upper edge of the section 15 of the finishing structure, the door check will be held in its inactive position, but when it is desired to release the same, the .arm may be pressed inwardly disengaging the shoulder 22 and member 15, whereupon the spring body portion 19 will move downwardly to engage the floor, to hold the door in an open or partially opened position.
In the modified form of the invention as illustrated by Figures 7 and 8 of the drawings, the door to which the check is supplied, is provided with a bore extending plunger outwardly from the lower end of the barrel. Formed on the lower end of the plunger is a pad 30 that engages the floor under the action of the spring 29 to hold the door equipped with the check in a predetermined position.
I claim:
In a door check of the class described, a 7
body portion formed of spring material, an arm atone end of the body portion, said arm having offset portions defining shoulders, and means cooperating with the shoulders for holding the body portion in its inactive position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixedmy signature.
JOHN H. MAURER.
