IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-JARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,437, dated September `7, 1875; application led April 8, 1875.
Newark, in the county ot Licking and State ot' Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jars; and l do hereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description 'ot'. the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and nseit, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, which form part of this specilication.
My invention relates to certain improve- .ments in truitjars.
ln the drawings, Figure l is a View in elevation ot' a `jar and lid with sealing-clamp, the lid being in its unlocked position, Fig. 2, the saine, the lid being locked. Fig. 3 is a separate view of the clamping or lid-securing bar.
My invention has for its object the construction ot' a simple and effective self-sealing jar; and consists in constructing the lid with a center pin or projection and small bevel or inclined surfaces on each side thereof, and a removable clamp, the clamp constructed with a central slot to receive the center-pin oi' the lid, and an inclined or bevel under portion, to iit down over the inclination on the centerpin of the lid, as and for the purposes more fully hereinafter set forth and shown.
A is the jar; B, the lid, and O the clamp. At the central portion of the lid B is formed thereon a projecting portion, B1. A portion, B2, of theV center of this portion B1 extends up a short distance beyond the part Bl.- The top edge or rim ofthe post Bl is cut or formed into two inclined surfaces, b, on opposite sides. The clamp G is constructed of a cross-bar, C, which extends across the tcp of the jar, and two downwardly-projecting ends, O', which engage, by the part U, under the projecting' rim or mouth ot' the jar. The central portion of the bar O is enlarged and slotted at c, to
receive the center-pin B2 of the lid B, and the under surface of this enlarged part on each side of the slot c is beveled or cut away at b in a corresponding manner or inclination, to
the inclines b on the lid.
The lid is secured or clamped to the jar in the following manner: The lid is placed in position on the jar, and the clamp O placed inposition, as shown in Fig. 1, the slot c allowing the clamp to reach the center of the lid, the bevel b of the clamp tting down ou the bevels b of the lid. The clamp is then turned either to the right or left, the inclined portion ot' the clamp rising upon the incline of the lid, thus forcing the lid down tight in place and sealing the jar, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The clamp O, constructed with the enlarged central slotted portion c, and inclined or bevel under portion b', substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In combination with the clamp O C', constructed as described, the lid B, constructed with the central projecting portion Bl B2, and bevel-edged portion b, substantially as and for the purposes described. Y
3. The combination ot' jar A, lid B, constructedwith the projecting bevel-edged portion B2 b and center-pin B1, and clamp O O C, constructed with the enlarged slotted central portion c, and inclined or bevel faces b', as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of April, 1875.
JOSEPH H. OOWL.
