GIDEON W. GOTTINGHAM, OF ROOKPORT, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JAMES P. OOTTINGHAM, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAD-IRON HEATERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,389, dated September 7, 1875; application filed August 18, 1875. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GIDEON W. GOTTING- HAM, of Rockport, in the county of Aransas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sad-Iron Heater; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of sadirons which are made hollow, and intended to have a charcoal or other fire made therein; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the interior fire-pan and the grate therein, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a plan View. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section, taken on line 00 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line y y of Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a plan View of the grate.
A represents a sad-iron of the usual form, made hollow and provided at the toe with a tube or chimney, B. On top of the iron A may be formed lugs for attaching the iron to an ironingmachine, or it may be provided with a handle of any suitable construction, so as to use the iron by hand. Within the iron is placed a pan, 0, attached to the end plate D, which closes the heel of the iron. In the pan or drawer G is placed the grate G, which is constructed of a series of longitudinal bars, a a, running together at the point or toe, and connected at heel by a cross-bar, b. The bars a are made in the form of an inverted V, so as to form a longitudinal groove on the under side of each bar, and a seriesof holes, at, are made on one side of each bar near the upper edge. The groovesin the under side of the bars a are continued through the cross-bar I), and in the end plate D are draft-holes y corresponding with said grooves. In the upper part of said end plate are other draft-openings z to supply air to the fire, as shown. The grate G is placed in the bottom of the pan or drawer G, and the fire of charcoal or other suitable fuel is built thereon, when the drawer is inserted in the iron. The draft-openings y a supply sufficient air to to the fire.
Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V l. The grate G, constructed as described, of the longitudinal bars a, having draft-openin gs .70 near the upper edge, and grooved longitudinally on the under side, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the grooved and perforated grate G, and the end plate D, with lower draft-openings y, for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination of the hollow iron A, pan 0, end plate D, with draft-openings y z, and the grate G, all constructed as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GIDEON WESLEY GOTTINGHAM. Witnesses:
T. H. DUFFY, WM. B. UPPERMAN.
