Description

J. E. ROUGHAN SUPPORT FOR CONCRETE REENFORCING MEMBERS June 5 Filed April 30, 192'.
INVENTOR John E. B Dug/1a" I ATTORNEY Patented June 5, 1928.
UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. ROUGHAN, or LIBERTY, moms-A, ASSIGNOR mo WALTER F. nossnn'r, OF I LIBERTY, INDIANA.
SUPPORT FOR CONCRETE BEENFORCING MEMBERS.
Application filed April 30, 1927. Serial No. 187,935.
My invention relates to supports or stools designed for supporting the reenforcing members used in the construction of con crete roads and other constructions in S'Pittttl relation from the ground or base upon which they are mounted. It is an object of the invention to provii'le a device of this character which is inexpensive to produce and which will firmly and rigidly support the reentforcing bars or rods. all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring tothe drawings. which aremai'lo a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts:
Figure 1 is a perspective of a support illustrating my invention, and
Figure 2 is a perspective illustrating an application of my invention,
In the drawings, reference character '10 indicates a road base or the like upon which reenforced concrete is to be applied for form-. ing a hard surface. In order to strengthen the concrete and prevent it from spreading reenforcing members or bars 11 are combined to form a network embedded in the concrete when it is in place. The network 11 may comprise bars or recnforcing members of angular form and disposed in a substantially horizontal plane, such bars or reenforcing members being connected at their contiguous portions or angles by means of clips 12 or other fastening devices, and
forming squares or any other desired designs.
As is well-known, the road base or foundation ofttimes may not have a regular or smooth surface, and it is necessary to sup port portions of the reenforcing network in spaced relation thereto. support thereenforcing members at a height such that, when the construction is completed, the reenforcing network will be dis posed at a given distance relative to the surface of the same. I therefore provide a support or stool for. performing thisfunction.
The support is preferably of cast iron or other inexpensive material and is preferably cast in one piece and, as shown in Figure 1, consists of a relatively large, substantially Also, it is desired to flat base and an upright body 14 provided with a bifurcation 15 in its upper end for receiving the reenforcing members and sup.
porting them in the proper relation. The
.body .14 may be of any desired length in order to suit the requirements and conform to the type of construction for which thev are being used. '1
In lieu of the clips or fastening devices, thesupport or stool may be placed at the joint with the adjoining portions of the bars dis 'iosed in the bifurcated end of the support and in this i'nanner the support will perfornrthe dual function of supporting the reenforcing members and of holding them in proper relative position.
It "willybe obvious to those skilledin the art that various changes may be made in my device, without departing from the spirit of my invention. and I. therefore, do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification. but only as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A support or stool for reenforcing members of rcenforced concrete construction for supporting them in position comprising a relatively large, substantially flat base and an integrally formed upright having its upper end bifurcatedto receive said reenforcing members for sup iorting them above the base upon which they are mounted, substantially as set forth.
2. A support or stool for reenforcing members of reenforced concrete construction for supporting them in position comprising a relatively large substantially flat base and an upright body portion having its upper end provided with a bifurcated portion to receive said reenforcing members for supporting them in spaced relation above the base on which they are mounted, substantially as set'forth.
V In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Indianapolis. Indiana, this 26th day of April, A; D. nineteen hundred and twenty-seven.
JOHN E. ROUGHAN.
