Application filed September Myinvention relates to self-cleaning curry combs, and has for its object to simplify the elements of the curry-comb forming the subjectof U. S. Letters Patent No. 999,836 granted to me August 8, 1911, and their manner of cooperating for positioning the teeth or combs in the operation of currying and in sliding the scrapers along opposite drawing forming a .part hereof, and in which Figure l isa side elevation of the currycomb, the full lines indicating the relation of the teeth or combs and the scrapers when the combs are projected for currying, and the idottedlines the position of the parts when the combs are retracted between the scrapers in clearing the combs;

In the drawing the numeral 1 designates a plate constituting a frame having projecting below its under face any desired number of longitudinally extending parallel toothed combs2 positioned for slidable movement between sets of scraper-blades. These scraperblades 4. may be of any suitable formation and are spaced apart to form elongated slots 5 between them to receive the slidable toothed combs so that the combs will be cleared of adhering substances when retracted in the slots between the scrapers. These scrapers will be held in place by a suitable frame, consisting preferably of a heavy wire 6 passed through opposite ends of the scraper blades, crosswise thereof, and along one side, and having bent ends 7, as indicated in the drawing. tion with the pivoted handle of the combined article. The levers which are designated by the numeral 8 are connected with the opposite ends of the curry-comb, one toe-ach end, and having their short-arms 9 positioned to bear against the under-side of the scrapercarrying plate or frame 1, as illustrated, and are fulcrumed on the coi'nb-carrying frame 6 at'the four corners of the curry-comb by the elongated loop portions 10 of the short arms of the levers encircling or passing around the corner portions of the frame 6 as illustrated and clearly shown in Figures 2, 3, i and 5 of the drawing. The long arms of the levers 8 are formed with loop portions 11 through which pass the prongs 12 which are pivotally attached to the top plate 1 of the curry-comb, say, by having their bent ends 13 passed loosely throughopenings let in the plate as illustratedv in Figures l and 5, the other ends of prongs l2 having the operating handle 15 attached thereto. The levers 8 also bear against the top of plate or frame 1 at suitable points, preferably adjacent to opposite sides and ends of the plate as illustrated so that when the handle 15 is lifted from its inclined position indicated by dotted lines in Figure 1 to the full line position indicated in the same figure, the downward pressure of prongs 12 on the lower members of the loops 11 will exert a downward pressure on thetop frame or plate 1 so as to depress the sameand project the toothed combs 2 below the plane of the lower edges of the scraper-blades i, in position for currying operation, indicated in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawing. This elevation of the handle and depression of the top plate or frame and projection of the toothed combs takes place or is effected. when the currycomb is in contact with the body of the animal to be curried and downward pressure exerted on the top plate or frame through the levers and prongs of the handle. \Vhen the toothed combs are to be cleared of. substances accumulated in the currying operation, the prongs of the handle are caused to exert an upward pressure on the upper members of the loops 1]. of the levers 8 from the underside whereby the loop portions .11 of the levers are raised and the short arms 10 of the levers caused to exert an upward. pressure through their bent ends 9 on the underside of the top plate 1 so as to lift the plate and retract the toothed combs in slots between the scraper-blades 4, thereby cleaning the toothed combs from substances accumulated thereon. This lifting of the top plate or frame and toothed combs may be effected simply by giving to the curry-comb a downward thrust or swing while the handle is grasped by the hand which will change the parts from the position indicated by full lines in Figure 1 to the position indicated b dotted lines in the same figure. The e ongated character of the loops of the levers where the prongs-i of the handle pass through the same and of the short arms of the levers where they encircle the corner portions of the scraper frame, allow for sufficient play or movement of the levers to efficiently perform the functions specified.

It is to be understood that changes may be made in the details of the elements without departing from the essential features as expressed in the appended claims.

Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim is 1'. A curry comb comprising a frame carrying con'ibs, a frame carrying scraperblades, levers connected with the comb carrying frame to exert an upward pressure thereon to lift the frame relatively to the scraper-carrying frame, said levers in one position exerting a downward pressure on the comb carrying frame to lower the same into currying position and formed with loops;

at the adjacent ends of their long arms and a handle provided with prongs having a pivotal connection with the comb-carrying frame and passing through the adjacent looped ends of the levers to exert a downward pressure on one member of the loops to depress the comb-carrying frame in projecting the combs and an upward pressure on the other member of the loops in retracting the combs.

2. A curry comb comprising a frame carrying scraper combs, a frame carryin scraper-blades, levers connected with the comb carrying frame to exert an upward pressure against its lower face tolift the frame relatively to the scraper carrying frame and having an elongated slot connection with portions of the scraper carrying frame, said levers being positioned to exert a downward pressure on different parts of the comb carrying frame to project the combs into currying position and at their adjacent ends above the comb carrying frame formed with elongated loops, and a handle provided with prongs passing through the adjacent looped ends of the levers and pivotally connected with the comb carrying frame, said prongs adapted to exerta downward pressure on one member of the loops in projecting the combs and an upward pressure on the other member of the loops in retracting the combs;
