IN V'EJV TOR WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES WEATHERS, OF GREENSBURG, INDIANA.
I IMI ROVEMENT IN COMBINED SASH-HOLDERS AND CURTAIN-FIXTURES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,144, dated August 24, 1875; application filed July 22, 1875.
CAsE B.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES WEATHERS, of Greensburg, in the county of Decatur and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Sash-Locks and Curtain-Fixtures; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention consists in combining, with the window-frame and sash, a toothed cam and spring inserted in the former, and a rubber strip inserted in the latter, for holding the sash at any required height. It also consists in combining a shaft with the cam, which shaft is provided with a conical pulley on the exterior of the frame, and a lever, so that the curtain-cord is held and adjusted on the pulley, and the lever not only acts as a device for operating the cam, but (in connection with the pulley) forms a curtain-support, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detached View of certain parts thereof.
A represents a window-frame, B the upper, and O the lower sash. The two sashes are on opposite sides, provided with vertical grooves in which are inserted rubber strips a. In each side of the window-frame is made a recess for the reception of a cam, D, placed upon a shaft, 1). The cam on one side is for the upper sash, and the cam on the other side for the lower sash. The side of the cam adjoining the sash is toothed or serrated, as shown in Fig. 2, and it is held against the rubber strip a in the sash by means of a spring, 01, placed in the same recess with the cam. The inner end of the shaft 12, on which the cam D is placed, is made square, while the outer end is round, and has a short groove or notch, 00, formed in one side. Into this groove or notch is passed a screw, t, which is covered by the windowstrip. This screw prevents the shaft from being drawn out, and at the same time limits the rotary movement of the same. On the outer or front end of the shaft 1) is secured a lever, E, by the turning of which outward the cam D is released from the sash, allowing the same to be lowered. Between the lever E and the window-frame is placed a conical pulley, Gr, around which the endless curtain-cord h is passed, and by which means said cord may be tightened or loosened as required. This pulley and lever also are convenient for looping back the inside curtains, as represented in Fig. l.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a window-frame and sash, of the toothed or serrated cam D, spring d, and rubber strip a, substantially as and for the purposes herein set'forth.
2. The combination of the cam D, shaft 1), lever E, conical pulley G, and curtain-cord h, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim-the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 7th day of June, 1875.
, JAMES WEATHERS. Witnesses:
