BUILDING TILE.
Appucatmined January 19, 1i924.seriaima Gs'zgies.
My invention relates to-buildingtiles, and
'particularly to tiles made of cement or concrete.'` I
One of the objectso'f the invention is to lprovidea tile which will permit a building or building wall construction to be drained sol as to insure vthe dryness ofthe basement and other lower parts of the building.
Another object of the invention is to secure durability and simplicity of construction and inexpensiveness of manufacture.
` i ln` the accompanying drawings Fig. l is a ",.view partly in'vertical section and partly in side elevation ofthe lower portion of a building provided with tiles einbodying'my invention;
Y '.FigQQ is a plan lview of one of the tiles;V
' VFigs; vSand 4 are `crosssections taken on lines 3 3 and 4--4 respectivelyv in Fig. 2; and 'A Y 5,-is ak bottom viewv ofthe tile.
' Referring to the drawings, lu show the lower portion of a building construction,
the' same' consisting of tfwo` meeting walls A 'and B, and these Wall portions arejunder-l stood to compriserthe kbottom corner o f a y building,th`e ground or earth C being shown may with' sidewalls la and a'. central space 1b.
atone side andfbelow the same. The usual vfooting D is also shownanda Hoor E which `3() ,of the footing A befthe floor of the level slightly above the level D 'and which is understood to basement or theiirstfIOOr has 'its' upper of they building, as lthe case 'iiiay l be.
The walls A Aand B` aire preferably composedv of several layersvoftile 1 1 which be the usual or yordinary form of tile These walls also contain tiles embodying my invention and these tiles?, are preferably ,laid in a single row or layer at the bottom of and below the layers oft-iles 1 1.` Each tilen2` preferably comprisesy apair of side i walls 3 3 andend vwalls 4 4, andv an ininwardlyy from the endfwalls 4 4 and ter- :sal
'termediate cross wall 5, ,'5 forming ,spaces or chambers 6 6. EachV `tile also, preferably has horizontally dis horizontal membersv Y members upper sides of horizontally arranged duct" -or vconduit spaces or,V chambers 9 9, which said'cwalls 3, 4 and arelfor drainage purposes as will be further `caught bythe y my improved tiles and automatically drainedv building, no matter what itmaybe.
av-space or chamber 8 is" explained, lsaid 'conduits or ducts 9 9 lying between the low.er ends of thetside walls v3 3, asbest shown in Fig. 3. Thus each tile is provided With a horizontallyr disposed conduit formed in two parts 9 9 with an Vopenso'y ing Y 8* from above into yt-he same randthis conduit permitsthe drainage and horizontal f flow of waterA or other liquid which may be in thevic'inity and `which may enter the conduit either through the Vcentral opening 9 or'atxthe ends 10-10', 'the side members projecting kslightly beyond the end walls' 4-4. Also `the horizontal `members 7 7rserve as'shelves or platforms to catch such mortar or other substance as may be Adropped down upon orinto the tiles, particularly in the'process of building. Y
, "fhus it Will'be seen that when'the Wall is built as shown, water may yseep through the these tiles 2 2 are laid end to end, as Well shown in Fig. l, wherebyl a continuous duct is formed lto the tile ductsections 9 9, the
water will run along, this continuous ductv anduponthe footing Dupon. which the tiles are laid `and* will'flow or drain into *some* suitable drainage arrangement, as for example, thetile drain 11 which is composed 'sidewalls ofthe tiles '1 1 and it Will run down the same and in the intermediate space l, and yvvllyflow intoy the tiles 2 2 and into the duct-s 9 9 thereof, and inasmuch as of tiles 12 12' and anlelbow tile 13 eXtendv ing up and'into an aperture 14 inthe foot Dunderneathone ofthe tiles whereby water drained into tiles 2 2 `will run along the duct or passage formedjthereby and intol the` "drain 11, and thence to'a sewer'ornother o suitable outlet; -j K Thus it will be seen' that a thoroughly tight floor and basement or other lower building part will be secured, all watei'A which may seep or flowinto the Wall at any point thereof -beingy drainage system provided by automatically` y loov off to somefsuitable point, thereby insuring thorough dryness ofthe` lower `Also lin they process of building or at other times, any
,drainage system provided by the drain tiles 2 abovedes'cribed.- c l A'It will be understood that changesand hard matter, such as excess mortar, will be caught on and by the horizontal member 7 andso prevented from entering the ductr part of the lmodifications maybe made inthe construcf i -io tion of the drain. tiles herein disclosed, and also in the mannerl in which the are used,
without departing from the spirit of myv invention.
What I claim is:`
l. A building tile provided with covered means for draining the. building art, 4of
