PATENT OFFICE.
or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.-
COMBINED SWIMMING POOL AND AMPHITHEATR.
Application filed September This invention relates to a combined swimming pool and amphitheater .and more particularly to a structure in which, when the pool is partially or wholly drained, a portion ot the pool may be used i'or exhibi tion purposes and the floor ot the rest ci the pool may be used to accommodate the spectators.
An important object ot the inventlonus to provide a novel structure which can easily be converted into proper form tor use either as a swimming pool or an amphitheater.
ln carrying out the i vention, provision mayT be made ot a structure ot this kind in which there is a deep pool insidethe main pool and spaced trom the walls so that, when there is water in the deep pool only, the floor ot the shallow portion of the pool may be used tor seating space, the `downward slope ot such floor towards the deep pool tending to give a good view ot the deep pool when used for diving contests and contests ci the same general nature.
iliccording to another application of the invention the deep pool may be covered by members such as planks to form a plattorni ot' which the central portion may be used as an arena ior boxing bouts and the like and the surrounding portions of the platform may be used to accommodate ring side seats to increase the seating capacity.
Other important objects ot' the invention are to provide a structure ot the kind speci lied in which there are openings, at suit-- able points in the enclosing wall, closed ivater tight by bulklicads removable to open the ends of corresponding aisles starting trom said openings; an arrangement ot the floor relative to surrounding promenade so that at one of the openings the corre3ponding aisle .is substantially level with the promenade at its outer end and slopes dow wardly theretroin toward the deep pool, and at the other openings the outer ends otthe aisles are at one or a 'plurality ot steps down, additional steps being formed in the enclosing wall at such openings; a construction in which there is a pipe 1Srench for the main pipes ot' such systems as a skinnncr system tor cleaning the surface water, a water vacuum cleaner system t0 remore sediment 'from the bottom of the pool and a water su-ply and circulation system; means tor draining the scum gutter ot the shallow pool into the pipe trench; means as, 1925. serial No. 59,054.H
'for draining the promenade directly into the pipe trench; independent water supply systems ior the deep and shallow pools; a scum gutter for the deep pool affording a support for a cover of the deep poolg'and means for filling and draining the deep pool.
Preferably the combined swimming pool and amphitheater proper is part ot' a structure arranged tor permanent seats around the swimming pool and amphitheater which may be designed for use tor circus per torinances, horse shows, etc. To prepare the empty pool for such purposes the deep pool is covered and the shallow pool floor and deep pool cover are covered with a'protect-ive layer of suitable material such as sawdust. The entire pool then becomes an arena and for circus exhibitions the cover' of the deep pool may be usedto accommodate one or more rings and one or more platforms or squares and the Surrounding portion of the licor may be used for the usual parades, chariot races, etc. Y
Ordinarily both the shallow and deep pools are kept full in summer and empty during the winter when, the deep pool being kept covered, the whole pool is used -tor `athletic exhibitions, circus performances,
horse shows, etc. lVhen, however, during the period when the pool is arranged tor sports-other than'swimming, it is desired to have diving exhibitions, the cover is taken oli the deep pool and the latter is filled with water.
In the summer period while the entire pool is full, such diving exhibitions in the deep pool are usually given without draining the outer pool. Although considerable expense would be involved in draining and refilling the shallow portion ot the pool, there might be occasions during the su1nmer period which due to .the prices charged for tickets might make it worth while to drain the shallow pool to provide additional seating capacity tor diving or similar exhibitionsor tor exhibitions given on the cover ot the deep pool. l
Other features and advantages will hereinatter appear.
In the accompanying drawings:
F ig. l is a plan viewl illustrating at one end the appearance ot thestructure when used tor a `swimming pool and at the other end the appearance ot the structure when used as an amphitheater; certain underlying parts of the periphery being indicated in displaced position along one-halt ot the periphery tor greater elearness;

Fig. 5 is a schematic vien' similar to Fig. 4 but illustrating a inodilied structure;
Fig. G, is a sectional view illustrating teatures ot the deep or diving pool; and
Fig. 6 is a section taken on the line tid-6 ot Fig. 6.
As illustrated in Fi g. l, the combined swimming pool and amphitheater comprises a pool l separated by a Wall 2 troni a. sui rounding promenade and including an inner deep or diving pool Ordinarily the pool l is kept substantially itull. but, when it is desired to give exhibitions such as bore ing matches, the shallow portion is lett empty, the diving pool is covered as hereinafter descriliied, and seats are supplied as indicated at the lett in Fig. l. Alsoit the diving pool fl.- only is to be used tor exhibition purposes, the surrounding shallow portion may be let't dry and utilized for seating purposes.
The surrounding Wall 2 is provided with a scuni gutter 6 ot which the inner Wall T projects inwardly beyond t-hetop ot' the main wall and serves as a tootV rest tor persons sitting on the top ot the wall. Preferably the top of the Wall 2 projects over the scum glitter G and forms an automatic wave -return 1l as Well as a shield for the scum gutter. Water entering the scum gutter is drained through pipes 8 into a pipe trench 9 (F ig. l) and linallv through drains 10 at the bottom ot the trench. The floor or bottom of the pipe trench is arranged so that the drains 10 are at points Where the floor is lower than at intermediate points, thus assuring suitable drainage. The variation ot elevation et the lioor at ditl'erent points along the pipe trench is indicated by breaks 10 in the concrete structure.
As indicated in Fig. 2, the tloor ot the pool 1 comes up at one end to substantially the level ot the promenade, at the other end to one step belenT suoli level, and at intermediate points to tivo or more steps below such level. When the structure here illustrated is to be used as an ainphitlnaiter, the Wall is opened at both ends and at three intermediate points on each side.
At the inain entrance l2, the aisle 13 starts at the level ot the promenade and slopes downwardly toward the adjacent end ot the deep pool 4; at the opening 14e at the other end et the pool the aisle l5 is one step down troni the level ot the promenade and at the side openings lo', li', ld, l5), 2() and 2l, the corresponding side aisles 22, 23, E24, 25, 26 and 27 are two steps below the promenade, a step being provided in the wall at each ot such side openings as indicated in Fig. 2. A corresponding step 25: may also he provided in the wall at the opening let.
lllhen the pool isin use all ot the openings l2, lll, 16, 1T, t8, il() and 2l are closed by suitable bulkheads 30, as illustrated in Fig. 3 'tor one ot' the side openings at 'which a step 28 is provided. .ttt the openings in the wall 2, provision is made ot trames 3l ont suitable material such as iron anchored in the structure ot concrete or like material by members 32 otl Awhich angle portions are buried in the concrete and other portions are secured to portions oil the iron traine.
To enable 'rater tight closures to be et tected, gaskets lil ot suitable material suoli as rubber are interposed between the trames i and the removable hulldieads l0 and screws Eid passed tlnfough openings in the lnilkheads .Elli tpre'terably ot steel) and gaskets and screwed into said trames 31. As shown in Fig. 2:3 each lulllihead 30 is provid ed with a false scum gutter 55 and an automatic wave return 3G.
For Water supply and circulation, provision is made ot a pipe 37 supported in the pipe trench by brackets 38 set in the concrete wall, and ot pipe lines 3S) leading to in let nozzles l0 arranged at di'lferent heights around the pool, preferably at points inidway between the Water level indicated at il (Fig. fl) and the tloor ot the pool. The in let nozzle ll() shown in Fig. il is approximately at the middle ot the pool at one side thereof and the other nozzles would be successively liighcr toward the shallow end ot the pool (the bottom at such end being indicated by the line l/l) and also towards the deeper end et the pool (the bottom at such end being indicated by the line 112i). Pret erably all inlet nozzles point twvard the center and all pipe lines 3.0 are provided with valves 39".
The supply and circulation oit water in the diving pool may be ell'ected in the saine general ay as described tor the shallowl portion et' the pool. To this end provision is made at the right hand end olA the diving pool (Fig. l) ot water inlets aft supplied by a pipe line tilt Preferably th inlets are located near the top oi' the diving pool. The diving pool is provided at tivo depressed portions et its bottom with two sun'ips d5 covered by grills flo set in suitable trames. These sunips are connected to an outlet pipe line i7 connected with a suitable pump (not shown). ',lhe d ecp pool is alsow provided with a senin gut er e8 connected by pipes 49 with a drain pipe 50 which is controlled lll() by a suitable valve 51 which may be in any convenient location. The inner iva-ll of the scum gutter 48 may be used as a support for the cover 52 Which may be made up ot planks or the like.
Also mounted on brackets in the pipe trench 9 is a pipe line of a vacuum cleaner system and at a plurality ot points around the pool pipe lines 551., preferably having valves 51151, are provided for connect-ing the pipe line with nozzles to which may be attached vacuum cleaner devices (not shown) for removing sediment and the like from the bottom of the pool. F or skimming the surface of the Water iny the pool provision is made at suitable intervals ot lflat fanshaped nozzles 56 each connected by a pipe line 57 and a valve 57 with a main pipe line 58 mounted on brackets in the pipe trench.
To cover the pipe trench 9, use is made ot slabs 59 of reinforced concrete rest-ing on ledges 59 in the concrete Walls of the pipe trench. Between the ends ot successive slabs are placed manhole trames 60, which may be of suitable metal, and manhole covers 61 lorn'ied of central plates and Yframes litting into said frames 60 and projecting above the central plates to such an extent that their upper edges are substantially flush with the upper edges ot the ramesGO and with the upper faces ot rubber tiling 62 on 'the promenade Hoor and on said covers 61.
During' the use ot the pool considerable Water drains on the promenade floor from bathers standing; or Walking thereon or sitting on the coping or top of the Wall 2. To enable this water to drain Yfreely into the pipe trench provision is made of suitable openings near the inner edges o'l' the main hole covers 61 and coveredby perforated plates 63. The rubber tiling; is also cut away above said opening so that the Water from the promenade drains freely there through. later 'from the copingv also runs down on the inner side thereoi1 and, due to the fact that the inner tace ot the copinp` is oiiset outwardly from the inner 'ace ot the inner Wall ot' the scum gutter, drops directly into the senin gutter.
lt should be `imderstood that a constant circulation ot Water in the pool is etllected by drawingout Water through the sumps and pipe line et? and returning' it through the inlets 50 ot the shallow pool portion or the inlets 44k ot the deep pool portion or through both sets oil inlets at one time. Preferably provision is made of a. ina-in punrp for use when the shallow pool is in use and ot' a separate pump for use -With the deep pool only, and the operation ot the main pump is such that the water in the whole pool is completely changed in six hours. letore the Water drawn out through the pipe 4T is restored to the pool, it is treated to bring it into the condition of ocean water in the corresponding latitude by passing it through salt tanks; it is ltered in connection with a treatment for coagulation; it is pass-ed through heatersto temper or heat the Water to the proper ternperature; it is passed through an ultraviolet ray sterilizer; and Ait is treated With chlorine b v material trom a chlorinator fed into the main receiving the water trom said ultra-violet rav sterilizer. Such apparatus is more l'fully disclosed in my prior application hier. No. 734l,547 `liled Aug. 27, 1924, (patented January 1926, No. 1,568,117). For convenience in placing the chairs, the concrete floor ot the shallow portion of the pool may be marked (Fig. 1) to outline the aisles and thereby determine thelocationA ot the seats. Preferably such marking is obtained by the use ot strips or insets of concrete ot ditl'erent color troni the rest of the jtloor. Exposed portions ot the structure, such as the scum gutter and the inner surfaces ot the Walls ot' the pool, may be covered With suitable tiling. The reinforcement ot the concrete may be eiiiected by members 65 as indicated in the various iigures. i
Attaching devices 66 tor steel supports 6T ol suitable divine; structures are provided at suitable intervals around the deep pool and provision is made at different points in the bottom ot the pool ot eyes or inserts 66 located below the surface of the floor and adapted for use in connection with removable athletic apparatus.
Ladders 69 such as shown in Fig. 6, may be provided in the Walls of the deep and shallow pool portions. rlhese ladders which are ot vcement or like construction are sanitary and are set in the Wall so as to be substantially i'iush With the wall and thereby decrease the chance or' accident by striking the saine.
ln the modilied structure shown in Fig. 5, provision is made ot special drain pipes 7() for the promenade. rllhese pipes have at their upper ends grids 70EL in the floor ot the promenade and receive the drainage troni the scum ,gutter through pipes 71.
is indicated in Fig. 1, the skimmer pipe line 58 is supplied with Water through an inlet 272; the water supply pipe'l receives Water through an inlet 73, and the vacuum cleaning pipe 52 is connected With the pump through a pipe Tl.. lt should be understood that the drainage from the pipe trench through the drains 10 may be carried off in any suitable manner.
Structures built accordingl to the present invention may vary widely as to size, but lor illustrative purposes the dimensions ot' an approved structure will be given. The inner dimensions ot the main pool 1 are length, 196 feet, 7% inches, and breadth,
lis
87 feet, 5 inches; and those of the diving pool el are length, l5 liest, and breadth, feet. When the deep pool is covered, the seats are so arranged as to leave a space ill teet square, thus prtnfiding lor an arena 2l feet square for boxing and other purposes and a passage 5 'lect Wide on each side ot said. arena.. The main or end aisles are 5 feet wide and all oit the other aisles are 4 feet Wide, with the exception olf the short aisles leading diagonally to the corners of the arena, such aisles being- 3 feet Wide. The bulkheads 30 are of ditlierent lengths, such as t tent, 8 teet and l2 4leet, to correspond with the various widths ot openings. ln such large concrete structures it may be necessary to provide expansion joints as shown at 7T on Fig. 6.
As shown in Fig. 3, the lower edge ot each bulkhead rests on a ,ledge 78 ot tile projecting beyond the trame 3l. Pre l'erably there is the same arrangement at all ot' the side openings in the wall Q. At the end openings, however, no such ledge exist-s and it is found zulvantageous to provide in the concrete iioor a groove (not shown) to rcceive the lower edge oi the bulkhead.
As shown in Fig. 3, the opening over the step is covered, when the bulkhead is in position, by a plate 79 secured in position by screws 8() "passing theretlnrough and threaded into ears or lugs 8l secured to the bulkhead. Also secured to the plate T9 by screws S0 is a l'lange which rests against the inner li'ace ot the Wall above the intormediate step. The plate 79 may serve to some extent as a brace ttor the bulkhead but its principal service is to cover said opening. The advantage ot placing the step 2S in the wall is evidentinasmuch as il? a per manent step were placed so as to project into the pool there would be considerable danger that bathers would be injured by striking the saine.
Although the bulkheads 30 may be constructed in different ways, the form shown in Fig. 3 is preferred. In this form there is a vertical web Se curved outwardly to form the false scum gutter 35, then extended vertically up y*ard to substantially the height olf the Wall. and then outwardly to 'forni a flange 85. lllounted on the 'flange 85 is a coping in the form oit an inverted channel member S6 secured to the web tl-l by screws Si' passing through the channel member 8G, the `flange, and the gasket 33, and threaded into one or more members 8S.
To clean the bottom oi the pool use is made ot the vacuum pipe line connections and nozzles lllhen any one `nozzle 55 is to be used, an attendant reaches down beneath the surface oit the water and unscrews a. cap (not shown) and attaches `the tube ot a suction cleaner (not shown) which is handled from a boat and serves to clean the bottom oi the" pool over a segment of :i circle ot which the radius is determined by the length ot the tube. The suction cleaners or nozzles used i'or this purpose may be substantially the same as those used for household purposes in buildings provided with vacuum cleaner systems.
nt suitable times` preferably after use ot the suction cleaner, the skimmer system is used to clean the surface olf the water of any 'aste material. The skimmer nozzles 56 are on one side ot the pool and When they are in use additional water may be sujiplied, the sui-tace Water overflowing into the scum gutter on the side opposite the skimmer nozzles 56.
Vilhen it is desired to use the structure for exhibition purposes the water withdrawn by draining through the sumps 4:5 and the pipe line a7. lt diving exhibitions are to be given, the water kept at the level ol" the deep pool scum gutter, the valve 51 being open atI the time to permit drainage through the scum gutter. Usually, however, during the winter season the Whole pool is lcptdry and chairs are arranged on the floor ot the shallow pool portion in accordance with the markings on the loor. The bulkheads 30 are, of course, removed to give access to the aisles. Then the exhibition is, ttor example, a boxing contest, the seating is continued over a portion of thc cover lcaving;- a boxing ring S3 surrounded by an aisle.
To restore the structure to condition for using the Whole pool, the cover 52 is removed and all oi the bulkheads are placed in position in the Wall 2. Then the valve til is closed to prevent the escape oli' water through the deep pool scum gutter and Water admitted through the various inlets until the pool is lilled.
The foregoing detailed description has been given tor clear-ness of understanding, and no undue limitation should be deduced therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as possible, in view ot the prior art.
Having thus described my invention, l claim:
