UNITED` STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTERJ. H. KING, OF ALAMEDA, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO UNION LITHOGRAPH COMPANY, INC., `OF YSAN FRANCISCO,
IORNIA.
CALIFORNIA, A CORPORATION OF "CALI- y BINDER.
Application mea october 2s, 1925. serial No. 65,404,
lhis invention relates tobinders and particularly to binders for l loose Vleaves of books, such, lor example, Aas check books and receipt books. i y
An object" of the invention is the provision of a sectional binder, the sections of which may be readilyand permanently intcrlocked. i i Y l Another object of my present invention I is the provision of a binderv capable of binding leaves together insuch a manner that there is no possibility of any of the leaves being accidently lost. 4 p 1 A further object of my invention isthe l provision of a sectional binder, one of the sections of which may be secured toa book cover-,by the manufacturer,` while the other section may be readily applied by the person who inserts a filler in the book cover.
A'still further object of my invention is the provision of abinder capable ot' withstanding comparatively high pressure without being damaged.
Another object of myy invention is the provision of a binder free from outwardly extending projections so that the leaves held by the binder will not be damaged byv being turned. v
Another object of this invention is `the provision of a binder which may be secured to a book cover in a manner permitting the top o'lf the cover to be folded under the back oi'i the cover, whereb the space occupied by the open book may be economized.
gether with such other objects as may subsequently appear, this invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts `hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which i Figure l. is a perspective View ot an open hook cover with a liller ot loose leaves therein, bound together by two binders of my inrcntion.
Figure 2 is a lragmentary vertical section ot the binder, filler and cover shown in Figure 1, the book in this view being closed. Figure 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 in the direction of the arrows, shown in Figure 2, and
Figure '4 is a perspective view of the binder ofiny invention. v
Referring to the drawings `for more de-` `9 around to the points lVit-h the foregoing objects in view, to`-v opposing lowerscction 6, both of which i.
sections are preferably formed from coinparatively broad metallic bands orribbons. The upper section 5 inverted U comprising an arcuate upper end portion 7 8. The side portions of the metal strip or ribbon from which the section 5 is formed` are bent inwardly and, from the points y p 10, are pressed back into contact with the vertical side portions` 8 and the upper arcuate portion 7. Below the points 9` and 10,` however, the inwardly bent side portions of the band from which the member 5 is vformed, Vare spaced from the vertical portions 8, thus forming guide i members `9? and pockets 10a-between the guide members 9 and the vertical portions 8. The vertical portions 8 of the section 7 are punched to form projections 11 which slope inwardly and upwardly, and these projections have horizontal upper edges 12 broken away from the vertical portions 8 of the section 5.
The lower section 6 of the binder is U- shaped and comprises a bottom 13 `and vertical sections 14 at right angles tothe bottom 13. The vertical sections 14 are preterably resilient and are punched to provide `apertures 15. The bottom 13 of the lower section Gfis provided with an aperture 17 through which extends a rivet 18 provided for the purpose of binding the lower section to the back cover 19 of the book shown in Figure 1. Two of the sections G are riv- 'eted to the back cover of the book shown in Figure 1 and yare spaced from each other.
A filler 21Y which consists of checks 22 to ther-ight of the scoring 23, and ot' stubs 24 to the left of the scoring 23, may be placed on the lower sections 6 before the upper sections 5 are made to engage the sections 6. The upper and lower stub portions 24 are is given the form of anA and vertical side portions ifi() provided withv apertures 25 through which y one of the vertical portions 14 of each section 6 extends. The upper sections 5 may then each have one of their vertical rportions 8 inserted into the apertures 25. The sections pressed downwardly, the verticals la, due to their' resiliency, are snapped over the projections 1l, which projections then extend through the apertures 15. The upper edges of the apertures 15, which are preferably straight, Vlie above the edges 12, which edges prevent the sections 6 from being withdrawn from the sections 5. the turned-in side portions of the ribbon from which the section is formed, yare pressed against the vertical portions 8 above the points 9, or, in other words, the `pocket 9lll terminate at the points 9, so that the movements of the sections 5 and 6 toward each other are thus limited.
It will thus be readily appreciated that when the sections 5 and 6 of my improved binder are snapped together, they are permanently inter-locked.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a device which is capable of fulfilling the objects of my invention as hereinbefore stated.
Although I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention, it to be understood that the same is susceptible of various changes; and I reserve the right to employ such as may come within the scope of the appended claims. l
I claim: Y
1. A ring for loose-leaf binders comprising As previously stated,
upper and lower substantially U-shaped mating members, forming a permanently closed loop or ring, one of said members having guideways for the reception of the uprights of the other member, the uprights of one of said members having apertures and the uprights of the other members having projections adapted to be sprung into said apertures when said members are Vbrought together'into interlocking position.
2. A device of the type described comprising a loose leaf binder consisting of two members adapted to telescope one Within the other for forming a ring and cooperating catches carried by said member for permanently securing them together.
3. In a binder, afU-shaped member having` its curved edges bent back upon themselves for reinforcing the member, the baeluvardly bent portion being spaced away from the walls of said member for a predetermined distance for providing guideways, a second U-shaped member having its ends receivable in said guideways, and means carried by both of said members for permanently securv ing said members together, said first named member permitting leaves' carried thereby to be swung over in the sa'memanner as the movement of the leaves in a book.
