Description

P. J. SIMON PPPPP RT ,Paul J Simon NNNNNNN R Patented May 1, 1928.
UNITED STATES PAUL JOSEPH. SIMON, OF PHILADELP HIA, PENNSYLVANIA,
SUPPORT.
Application filed November 1, 1924. Serial No. 747,352.
This invention relates to supports, and more particularly to a supporting clip formed of spring material and adapted to be attached to a suitable support for holding documents, papers, or analogous articles, securely in position, so that they may be quickly and easily removed, if desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a support, as specified, which is simple in construction, may be cheaply manufactured and one in which the inherent resiliency of the metal employed, is enhanced by the particular shape of the clip body, so as to provide firm and secure engagement with the objects or articles to be supported.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detail description, and in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1is a front elevation of the improved support or clip.
Figure 2is an edge elevation of the improved support or clip.
Figure 3is a front elevation of a modified form of the support or clip.
Figure 4;is a side elevation of the modified form of the support or clip.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the improved support or clip is constructed of spring sheet metal, and it comprises the attaching portion 1 which is formed integrally with the main body 2, the entire support being formed of a single piece of material. The attaching portion 1 comprises a pair of slightly spaced parallel sections 3 and 4, which are joined at the uppermost end of the support, and between which the head 5 of a suitable attaching tack 6 is engaged. The tack 6 extends through the inner section 4, and is adapted to be driven intpsk a support of any suitable type, as shown at The support or clip extends outwardly substantially at right angles to the attaching portion 1 from the lower end of the outer side 3 of the attaching portion forming the substantially horizontal shoulder 7. From the horizontal shoulder 7 the main body 2 inclines downwardly and inwardly towards the support A, and it has its free lower end slightly rolled, as shown at S to provide a non-abrasive article engaging end and also to provide a flaring entrance between the support or clip, and the permanent support A, so as to facilitate papers or analogous articles to be slipped behind the spring body or arm 2 of the support. The entire body of the support or clip is made of spring material, and the inherent spring action thereof'is enhanced by the outward bending of the portion 7 and the corresponding inclining of the body'or arm 2. Referring to Figure 2 of the drawings it will be seen that a tool or implement of some kind may be used to engage with the clip between the shoulder 7 and the part 3 of the clip, and by means of several blows from a hammer, the clip can be bent or shaped at this point so as to greatly increase the tension of the part 2 of the clip, so that the surface engaging element 8 will greatly tighten against the stationary support a. In additionally bending the clip at this point will cause the part 3' to fulcrum on the head of the securing means 6, in such wise as to permit the clip to be properly shaped to increase its tension, and furthermore the part 3 hides the head of the securing means.
In Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings, a
modified form of the invention is shown 1n which the attaching portion 1' comprises only one thickness or, layer of the metal, and the attaching pin 6' extends therethrough with the head engaging against the outer surface of the attaching portion 1'. If it is so desired, the body or arm 2 may be gradually decreased in width from the outwardly bent substantially horizontal shoulder 7 to the curved edge 8, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
It is, of course, to be understood, that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in different relations, and therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner, except as set forth in the claim hereunto appended.
What I claim is As an article of manufacture, an article holding clip constructed from a simple strip of soring metal folded on itself at one end to provide two parallel parts, one of the parts constituting an attaching element for the reception of securing means to fasten the clip to a stationary support, the other part constituting a wearing covering or shield overlying the head of the securing means to prevent the head from forcing through the shield, said clip at a point beyond the shield being bent laterally and outwardly, said lata substantial number of thicknesses of articles to engage thereunder and therefore abut said shoulder to retain the articles in 10 place and evenly disposed.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
PAUL JOSEPH SIMON.
