EYE TAPE.

My invention relates to the eye tape mem ber of a hook and eye tape garment fastening device or structureand it has for its generalvobject to provide a tape in vwhich the fabric employed is relatively thin but in which the construction is such that relatively great strength and durability are obtained.

It also is an object of the invention to providethe eye tape of a hook and eye tape garment fastening device of a structure such that the opposite edges thereof consist of folded portions of material whereby a tape of smooth iinishis produced.

Another object of the invention is to pro-I vide a tape comprising a plurality of strips on one of which the eye members of a hook and eye fastening device are mounted and the other of said strips'constituting a means for covering the greater portion of said eyes and also constituting an element of the means for infolding an edge portion of a garment to which the said tape is secured.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art and either will be referred to in the detailed description of the invention which follows or will become apparent from such description. v

In order that the invention may be readily understood and its practical vadvantages more readily and fully appreciated, reference should be had to the accompanying drawing in which I have illustrated an embodiment thereof in the form at present preferred.

In the said drawing:

Fig. 1 is a view in front elevation of a short section or length of one edge portion of a garment and of a corresponding portion of the eye tape embodying the invention;

Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation of a short section or portion of tape embodying the invention, one end portion of the cover strip or member of the tape being .displaced in order that one of the eyes may be shown more clearly in elevation; and

Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

In the drawing I have shown, in Fig. 1, a section or portion 1 of a garment to which an eye tape of a` hook and eye garment fas tening tape is secured, a short section only of the said tape being illustrated corresponding to the section or portion of thef'garment shown. Y

Broadly speaking, the tape comprises a main or body tape member 2 onwhich the loop eyes 3 are mounted at intervals and a cover strip or tape 4 by means `of which the inner portions of the loop eyes are covered as is illustrated in the drawing.

In order that relatively thin fabric may be employed in the manufacture of the tape I prefer a structure such as is illustrated in the drawing in which a strip of fabric is folded as indicated at 5 along a line near one edge portion thereof so as to provide a portion 6 of double ply thickness t0 which the loop eyes 3 are secured. The loop eyes '3 preferably are of rectangular shape at their outer ends as indicated atl 7 so lthat their opposite sides are in substantially par` double ply portion 6 ofthe tape structure as described, the strip of fabric of which the tape is constructed is folded alonga line 12 near the middle of the width of the strip to provide an overlying portion 13 for cov ering the` folded edge portion 14; produced as a result of the foldkalong the line 5 to which reference has heen made previously. The outer edge portion of the part 13 `is folded along a line 15 to provide an overly# ing portion 16, the edge of which terminates along a line adjoining the fastening eyes 8.

The loop eyes having been fastened to the double ply portion 6 of the strip of fabric and the latter having been folded in the manner as illustrated and as described, the

tion of the cover strip 4 is secured to the main tape 2 by means of a row of stitching 20. Because of the parallel relation of the opposite sides of' the loop eyes 3 to each other the row of stitching 2O may be formed by a sewing machine providedwitli an attachment such as that disclosed in my application for Letters Patent of the United States iiled November 15, 1926, Serial Number 148,413. The opposite or inner edge portion of the cover strip 4 overlies the portion ol the main tape 2 inwardly of the loop eyes 3. In the securing of the eye tape to a garment an edge portion ol the latter is inserted between the inner edge portions of the main tape 2 and the cover tape l, as is shown in Figs. l and 3 of the drawing, and the inner edges of the parts 2, l and the interposed edge portion of the garment l are then secured together by a row of stitching 2l. In the construction shown only one row ol stitching is employed but it will be understood that if preferred one or more additional rows ot stitching may be used.

For the cover strip I prefer a construction such as is illustrated in which the opposite edge portions of a strip of relatively thin fabric are folded along lirios as indicated at 23 and 24 so as to provide a cover strip 4 which practically is of double ply thickness. As a result of folding the si rip oi fabric to form the cover strip or tape Ll the opposite edges thereof present a smooth and sightly finish as is apparent.

It will be seen that by my invention I have Aprovided a tape ot extremely simple construction which provides convenient means by which the tape may be secured to an edge portion of a garment. It also will be seen that when the specific construction as illustrated is employed I am enabled to use strips of fabric which are relatively very thin without, however, sacrificing strength of structure. The construction embodying .my invention as illustrated provides a tape which is flexible or pliable and which also is less bulky in proportion to strength of structure than tapes heretofore constructed and vplaced on the market.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. The eye tape of a hook and eye tape structure comprising a strip of relatively thin fabric, one edge portion of which ii folded to form a part of double ply thick` ness, loop eyes secured to the said lastfmentioned part and the said strip folded along a line about the middle ol its width to provide a portion which overlies the `fold forining the said double ply part, the inner edge portion of the said last mentioned .portion being folded over the inner edge ol the said double ply part and terminating along a line in adjoining relation'to the inner ends of the said loop eyes, and a cover strip overlying the inner portions of the said loop eyes, and a row of stitching l'or fastening the outer edge of said cover strip to the said first named strip, the said latter strip being folded as described.

The eye tapel ol' a hook and eye tape the first named folded edge portion an the. inner edge ot the said last named part being l'olded inwardly and over the first named told, the edge thereofl terminating along a line adjacent the inner ends of the said loop eyes, and the said cover tape consisting of a strip of relatively 'thin material, the opposite edge portions of which are folded, a row of stitching 'lor fastening 'the outer edge of `the said cover tape to `the said main tape, the said row ol stitching engaging the opposite sides ot ythe said loop eyes to form supl'ilemental means for fastening them to the said main tape, and a rowy of stitching for fastening the inner edges of the main and cover tapes together, the said last mentioned row of stitching operating to secure the said tape to the edge portion ofl the garment which is intolded by the said inner edge portions of' the said main and cover tapes.
