' DRAFT GEAR.
Application filed September 26, 1925. Serial No. 58,692.
lustrate two forms of draft gear made in ac-.
cordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a horizontal section; Figure 2is aside View; Figure 3 is ,a section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1; Figure 4 is an enlarged'perview similar to Figure 3 but showing a modification; Figure 6 is a section taken on the line 66 of Figure 5; and Figure 7 is a side view of the form of gear shown in Figures 5 and 6.
Referring first to Figuresl [04 inclusive, 10 indicates draft sills preferably formed of channel bars and spaced apart by a top plate 11. Situated between the sills are the draft yoke/12 and coupler shank 13 through which passes the draft key, 14:. Secured to the outer faces of the sill webs are cheek pieces 15 in which are formed slots 16 for the reception of the ends of the key 14, which key has formed on one end a head 17. Secured to the flanges of the sill adjacent to the headed end of the key is a stop plate 18having a central opening 19 for theinsertion and removal of the key. Afterthe placed in position the opening 19 is stopped by a closure piece 20, shown in detail in Figure 4:, which closure piece is provided with to project through the fingers 21 adapted to retain the piece opening and be bent over in place.
In the form of draft gear above described the cheek pieces 15 are extended toward the rear and provided with a second pair of slots for the reception of a second draft key 22.
Figures 5, 6 and 7 show a modification in which the cheek pieces 15 are replaced by cheek pieces 23 secured to the inside faces of the sills and provided with stops 24 for a follower plate 25. The principal difference, however, in relation to the present invention lies in the. fact that a stop plate 26 is secured to only one flange of the sill, the upper edge being provided with a notch or reof the stop plate; Figure 5 is a' key has been Y ranged in thepath of the key,
cess 27 equivalent to the opening 18 in the previous form This recess is stopped by a closure piece 28 having a'turned over edge 29 and secured in position by a bolt 30. v 7
Having fully described my invention, what Iclaimas new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent of'the United States is 1'.: In a device of the class described, the combination with a pair of draft sills,'of a draft key passing through said sills, a stop plate arranged in the pathof said key, said plate being providedwith an opening for the a clo 1 insertion and removal of the key, and sure piece for said opening.
2. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a pair of draft sills, of a. draft .key passing through said sills, a stop plate carried by one of said sills and an ranged in the path of said key, vsaid plate a being provided with an opening for the insertion and removal of said key, and a closurepiece for said opening.
3.'In a device of combinationwith a pair of draft sills, ofa draft key passing throughsaid sills, a stop plate secured at both its upper and lower edges to one of said sills, said plate being provided withand removal for said opening. 1
4. In a device of the class described, the combinationwith a pair of draft sills, of a draft key passing through said sills, a stop plate carried by one of said sills and aring provided with an opening for the insertion and removal of the key, and a closure piece for said opening having fingers adapted to be bent into locking contact with the .stop plate. p
5. In car-construction having slotted draft sills for the reception of a, transversely extending connecting I rigging, an attachment for preventing withdrawal of such keyfin one direction, said attachment comprising a member adapted to be supported from thecorresponding adjacent draft sill, and 'a second member removably secured to the first member and disposed opposite the end of such key.
said plate .be-
the class described, the
-11 opening for the insertion of the key, and a closure piece key such as in a draft 1 In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my
