The invention relates to erossties for railroad tracks, and has particular reference to improvements in cross ties forlaying tracks in mines for room work and heading development, and also for light industrial tracks.
The invention has for its principal object the provision of a cross tie that may be used for laying temporary tracksand dispensing with the necessity for fish plates, bolts, spikes and wooden ties and that'will also adequately bond the rails used in room work and heading development in coal mines and thus make it possible to use the track for the return circuit'of electrically operated mining' machines and gathering motors, thus making itpossible to operate these utilities by a single cable and dispense with the'danger ofmine fires where double cables are.
used and when'they b ecome shorted. A further object of the invention is' the provision of across tie having means for clamping the railroad rails thereto comprising fixed clampingm'embers engaging the tie, and wedge meansfor cooperating with the fixed clamping members to engage the rails with the tie. i
A further object of .6 the invention is the provision of a cross tie for railroad tracks formed of channel beams having their ends returned and riveted or otherwise'secured together and the extremities of the ties snacedfrom the intermediate portions thereof to receive edges to coact with secured clamping means for the railroad rails to hold the rails in engagement with the ties.
' A further object of the invention is the,
provision in a railroad cross tie of the type heretofore referred to having clamping means secured thereto and another clampingmeans adjustably mounted thereon andpro vided with separate clamping members 'to engage the meeting ends of railroad rails to secure them together to the exclusion of fish plates and bolts and that will so closely engage the rail' ends' as to form an electric bond for the meeting ends of rails and thus eliminate the necessity of bonding the ends of the rails.
The invention will be described in detail hereinafter and will be found illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of one of the improved cross ties of a type to secure one ofthe rails intermediate of its ends at one end of the tie and to connect the abutting ends of meeting rails at the other end of the and shown fragmentarily,
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 22 of Fig ure 1,

Fi ure-9, a fra mental plan view of means for c lamping afialled rail, and
Figure 10 is a side view of the'structure shown in Figure 9. i
In the drawings similar reference characte'rs will beused to designate corresponding. parts thro'ughout the several views;
The improved railroad rail is formed preferably of channel beams having thejflanges extending downwardly so that-when laid'on the floor of a mine or in other position the flanges will prevent creepingof the same.
The tie is, designated 1 and has its ends re turned as shown at 2 and the returned portions secured'by means of rivets 3 or in any other suitable manner. The ends of the re-' turned portions are then formed with upwardly and inwardly inclined portions 4 and the extremitiesb formed on planes substan tially parallel with the intermediate portions of the tie 1. l j l In the form of tie selected for illustration, in vFigures 1 and 2, one end of the tie is designed to be connected to arail A, intermediate of'its ends, while the other end of the tie is designedto connect the meeting ends of railroad rails'designated B and C respectively. The. rail A is secured in position on the tie by means of a clamp member 6 that is preferably formed of channel And Web of the rail and act as a brace therefor.
The clamping means for the meeting ends of the railroad rails B and C, at the other end of the tie 1 are two elongated U-shaped members designated 13 and 14, the clamping member 13 having a tongue 15 extending on the same plane with the base 16 of the member and adapted to be secured to the tie by rivets 1? or other suitable fastening means, while the clamping member 141 has a tongue 18 extending substantially perpendicularly to the base 19, and said clamping member 14 is slidably mounted on thebase and adjustably secured thereto by means of a rivet 21 engaging in slot 20. As the tongues 15 and 13 in the clamping members 13 and 14, respectively, are formed from the metal of the clamp by cutting the part bent upwardly and back on the bases 16'and 19, respectively, it will be apparent that the clamping members 13 and 1.4-. are provided with engaging members 22 and 23 respectively, that are spaced from one another on each of the clamping members so that separate engaging members for the rails B and C are provided and provision made for closely clamping the rail and bonding means for connecting the rails are therefore provided that the rails may be used for one of the circuit: connections between a mining machine located in the room or drift into which the track may be laid or the motor comprising the motivepower for the mine cars The means for holding the rails B and C clamped between the members 13 and 1 1 comprises a wedge 24: having an inclined outer face 25 to engageincl-ined portion 4,
and adapted to engage tongue 18 on clamp member 14 and hold it in clamping relationship with the railroad rails. j
While the tie illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 is designed, as heretofore stated, to connect at one end a rail intermediate of its ends, and the other end provided with means for clamping the meeting ends of two rails, it will be apparent that other ties may be provided having both of their ends provided with means for engaging rails intermediate of their ends, it being apparent that as the ties are reversible the tie illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 maybe utilized for connecting abutting ends of rails at either side of-the track by simply reversing the tie.
, In Figures 9 and 1 0 are shown a means for clamping balled rails in which 31 indicates the tie, 32 a rail clamp secured to the tie by means of rivets 33 or other suitable fastening means, and having a plate 34 over lying the clamp 32 and secured by the rivets 33, said plate 34: extending beyond the clamping end 35 of the clamp 32 as shown at 36 to engage the ball of the rail B as illus trated, a wedge 37 being employed to clamp the rail in position.
What is claimed is: v 1. A cross tie, comprising a beam' having returned portions adjacent to the ends therec of, securing means connecting the beam and said returned portions, the extremities of the beam spaced from the intermediate portion thereof and adapted to receive clamping wedges to fasten the outer portions of railroad rails, and clips secured to the beam to engage inner portions of rail bases,
2. A cross tie, comprising a beam having a returned portion adjacent to an end there-- of, securing means connecting the beam and said returned portion, the extremity of the beam spaced from the intermediate portion thereof and adapted to receive a {clamping wedge to fasten the outer portion of rail road rail, a clip slidably mounted on the beam to engage the-base of the rail and on gageable by said wedge, and means on the beam to engage the outer side of the base.
3. A cross tie, comprising a beam having returned portion adjacent to an end there of, the extremity of the beam spaced from the intermediate portion thereof, and adapted to receive a clamping wedge to fasten the outer portion of a railroad rail, a clip slid ably mounted on the beam to engage the base of the rail and e-ngageable by said wedge,-a stud secured to said clip and slidable in a slot in the beam, and means on the beam to engage the other side of the rail base.
4. Securing means for the meeting ends of railroad rails comprisin'ga clamping memher having a base portion, and returned portions on said base spaced from one another to separately engage the adjacent ends of meeting rails. I J r In testimony whereof we afiix our signa tures. 1
