RAILROAD-TIE CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 28, 1920- Application filed May 11, 1920. Serial No. 380,631.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FLORYAN ADAMGZYK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coupon, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Tie Construction, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to railroad ties, and comprehends a novel construction to facilitate the laying of therail, and a tie possessing maximum strength and rigidity,
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detail description is taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction,
combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this ap plication like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tie constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the sections of the tie.
Fig. d is a similar view of the reinforcing Fig. 5 is a detail view of a retaining'plate.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the tie forming the subject matter of my invention is made up of two sections, 10 and 11 respectively, the adjacent ends of the respective sections being reduced as at 12 and disposed in overlapped relation as shown. The reduced portions 12 are provided with openings which register when the sections are associated and passing through these openings is a bolt 13 having associated therewith a nut 1 1. The outer end of each section is extended upwardly and thence inwardly to provide a flange 15, the space between the flange and the section of the tie defining a groove 16 for the reception of one side of the base of the rail. A combined reinforcing and retaining bar is' indicated at 1T, andis adapted to repose upon the tie bridging the joint between the respective sections 10 and 11. The bar 17 has spaced openings adapted to register with openings 19 in the sections of the tie and passed through the openings 19 and the openings 18 of the said bar are bolts 20. The opposite ends of the bar 17 are also reduced, the reduced extremities 21 overlying the opposite side of the base of the rail cooperating with the flanges 15 to hold the rail properly positioned upon the tie.
At each end of the bar 17 is a retaining plate 23 for the rail, each plate having an opening 24: adapted to register with the opening 18 of the bar to receive the bolt 20. Each bolt has associated therewith a nut 25 to hold all the parts fixed relatively in a given position. The retaining plates co- 7 operate with the bar 17 for holding the rails fixed upon the tie as will be readily understood.
While it is believed that from the fore going description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily understood, I desire to have it known that I do not limit myself to the details herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted'to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
Having thus described my invention what. I claim as new is:
A railroad tie made up of a plurality of identical sections arranged end to end, each section having a reduced end portion forming a continuity at one side of the section, said reduced portions adapted. to be arranged in overlapped relation and having alined openings, a fastening element passed through said openings, the outer end of each section being formed to provide an inwardly directed flange arranged above the section to provide a rail base receiving groove, said section having a bore adjacent its outer end, a combined reinforcing bar arranged upon the tie and bridging the joint between said sections, said bar having an opening adapted to register with said bore, a retaining plate arranged upon said bar adjacent each end, and having an opening adapted to register with the opening of said bore, a fastening bolt passed through said bore of said section into the openings of the bar in said plate and holding all of said parts fixed relatively, and said bar having its ends reduced and overlying the adjacent face of the rail as described.
