' Application filed June 11,1927. SerialNo. 198,171.
' The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved form oftray' for holding cards, stencils and the like which are filed vertically; to provide an improved construction' and arrangement of a a follower adapted to be shifted into engagement with,
' one end of the stack ofcards for holding them in compact form; to provide a follower of this kind having improved means for frictionally engaging certain portions of the tray; and to provide a tray having an improved form of'guideway for the follower.
An illustrative embodiment of this inventionv is shown in the accompanying draw ing, wherein 1 pr-Fig; 11s a perspective of a tray'and follower; to which this invent-ion is applied, part of one side of the-tray being broken away, and the follower being shown in posi- I tion for shifting. Fig. 2is a fragmentary view of the same, but showing the follower in its operativ position. 1 r
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section, taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.1
. Fig. 4 'is-an enlarged top plan of a por-' tion of the tray, showing the follower in its operative positiongandshowing a few cards supported in the tray.
" Fig. 5 is an enlargedfragmentary p ersp'ective of the follower. I
A tray embodying this invention is adapted' -for various uses, but in the specific construction herein shown it is I particularly suitable for use in connectionwith addressing'v machine stencils. v
In 'the embodiment herein illustrated the invention is applied to a card and stencil holder comprising a tray 1, adapted for supporting a'stack of cards 2, and having arranged therein a follower 3 which is movable into'engagement with one end. of the form.
stack. for holding the cards in compact walls 5, and substantially parallel side walls 6.] Theupper edges ofthe side walls 6' are bent inwardly and downwardly to'provide flanges 7 formingguides for the follower 3. Formed in the flanges 7 adjacent one end of the tray, are recesses 8 to permit removal of the follower from the tray.
- The follower. 3 is also 'preferably'a sheet metal stamping having'a flat bearing plate 'The' tray 1 preferably sheet metal stamping formed to provide 'a bottom 4, end 7 9 adapted to slidably engage the bottom of the tray when the follower is being shifted and adapted to bear against the end oflthe stack of cards when the follower is in its op erativ'eposition. Formed atth'e ends of'the plate 9,,are quadrants 10, which slidably engage the guides 7. Thei quadrants 10'; are
provided with arcuate bearing edges 11 1 which are shapedso that, when the follower is tiltedto the position shown'iin Figs; '2, 3 and 4, the quadrants 1Q bind between the bottom 4 and guides 7 for securingthe follower against tilting.
' Formed inthe plate 9 adjacent the ends thereof, are recesses 12, which are adapted. to receive the flanges 7 when the. follower 's tilted to fitsoperative position.
Extending along'one-edge of the bearing plate 9, is a fiange 13 arranged to; provide a handle,'-Wherebythe follower may be shifted along the tray and also tilted to itsoperastack of cards. In this latter position, the
quadrants l0 are frictionally secured tween'the bottom 4 and'guides 7Q a When Lthe stencils are being transferred to the tray from theaddressing machine, not shown, the tray is placed at the outlet end;
along which the stencils are fed. The ffolof the machine in a-hor'izontal'positionso as V .to constitute a continuation of the guideway lower is theninposition to permit it to slide along the tray-and, as'the stencilsa're ejected-from the machine-and enter the tray,
the follower slides along the tray with the stencils for'holding the latter'edgewise in the tray I a g Although but one specific embodiment of a this invention has been herein shown'and described, it'will be understood that numerous'details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without "departing y from the spirit ofthis invention as defined by the following claims; l I claim: 1.
