UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN FRANCIS MALONEY, OF SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF T EVAN R. WIDD'EN, OF SCBANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
SMOKERS APPLIANCE.
Application filed August 30, 1926. Serial No. 132,616.
This invention relates to an improved article of manufacture which may be broadly defined as a smokers appliance, the same having more particular reference to a device including a cigar or cigarette holder together with a protective casing therefor.
The invention has more particular reference to a device of this kind adapted to holding a cigar or cigarette in a convenient manner and for including the ignited end to prevent the falling of ashes and burnt particles while smoking.
The numerous advantages derived from the simple and inexpensive contrivancewill become apparent from the following description and drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a complete device constructed in. accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged view in section and elevation showing the construction and arrangement more in detail.
Figure 3 is atransverse section through 5 the casing.
In the drawin s, the reference character 1 designates the holder which is preferably constructed of bakelite or some substantial material, the same being of somewhat tapered configuration and provided at one end with a retaining rib 2. At the opposite end it is provided with a socket 3 for the reception of cigarette or cigar as the case may be, and this socket will be shaped to conveniently retain the latter. Extending beyond the of slightly less diameter than the main body portion of the holder. The casing is designated by reference character 5 and this is in the form of a tube of appropriate material. The tube is designated by the refer ence character 6, the same being openat one end and internally screw threaded to permit it to be fitted on to the nipple l. The oppoa site end terminates in a cap 7 provided with perforations 8 to admit air. If desired the cap forming end may be of material of a different texture from that of the main tube 6. Then, if desired, rings 9 of asbestos, cork or the like may be employed to serve as iinsocket is a screw threaded nipple 4 which ger grip in case the tube becomes too hot to be held in the fingers of the'hand.
In practice the article to be smoked is placed in the holder in the socket in a conventional way and the casing is slipped over the same and threaded on to the nipple so as to enclose said article. Of course, the article, which may be a cigarette ora cigar, is lighted before the cap is placed in position.
The device is advantageous to smokers on the street since it prevents ashes and sparks from dropping from the burning cigar on to the clothing. It prevents accidents from occurring in that the casing does not allow sparks to be thrown by the wind into the eyes of the smoker or persons close to him. In this way, it may be used to an advantage by automobile drivers as it will absolutely prevent sparks and ashes from being blown into the faces of other occupants of the automobile while riding. The device will serve as a safety appliance for persons desiring to smoke while working in places containing inflammable material. The device may be even safely used by persons confined to a bed, as it will prevent sparks dropping on to the bed clothing and causing a fire. These and many other advantages and features accompany the invention, but it is believed unnecessary to enumerate all of them, as a clear understanding; of the construction and main feature will be had by considering the description and drawing. Therefore a more lengthy description is thought unnecessary.
I claim As a new article of manufacture, a cigar or cigarette holder provided at one end with a socket beyond which is a screw threaded nipple, a casing having an imperforated cylindrical body internally screw-threaded at one end and connected to said nipple, said easing-being closed at its opposite end and said closed end being provided with air holes, and a pair of rings disposed in spaced relation to each other about the casing andin spaced relation to the ends of the casing. In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
STEPHEN FRANCIS MALONEY.
