UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW J. BARNARD, OF CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOSE-SPANNERS AND KEYS.
Specification forming part of LettersPatent No. 166,492, dated August 10, 1875; application filed May 1, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. BARNARD, of Camden, Camden county, New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Combined Hose Coupler and Key, of which the following is a specification:
. The accompanying drawingrepresents a perspective view of my improved combined hosecoupler and key.
My invention has for its object to furnish a very convenient implement by which a hose may be quickly and tightly connected to the Waterpipe, and the stop-cock of the same opened.
The use of the device produces a considerable saving in the wear and tear of the hose, as the same is not so much exposed to the breaking as when screwed on by hand.
The invention consists of an implement having at one end recessed or slotted prongs, and at the other a key and tapering cover-lifting lug.
In the drawing, A represents the handle of my combined hose-coupler and key, which is made preferably of a double-curved or S shaped form, to admit easier handling for the different purposes for which it is to be used. At one end of the handle, and cast in one piece therewith, are arranged the recessed pron gs B, which fit in a semicircle around the hose-coupling, and, by their recessed parts, on the lug of the hose-coupling. The coupling is first screwed on the thread of the water-pipe by hand, and then drawn tightly by applying the prongs, which admits of a quick and intimate joining of the parts. A key, 0, at the other end of the handle A serves to turn the water on or off by being applied to the stop-cock of the waterpipe, arranged in the usual manner in the common pave wash-box. A tapering lug, D, forms an extension of the key, and is cast in one piece therewith. It serves for lifting the lid of the box, so that the hose may be coupled and the water turned on.
The whole device forms a cheap, handy, and economical instrument for the different operations which have to be attended to therewith.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A compound implement consisting of handle A, having recessed prongs B B at one end, and key 0, as well as tapering pin D, at the other, as and for the purpose specified.
ANDREW JACKSON BARNARD.
