IMPROVEMENT IN FEED-GUIDES FOR PRlNTlNG-PRESSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,410., dated August 3, 1875; application filed February 4, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I JosEPn REED, of Jeffersonville, in the county of Clarke and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in FeedGuides for Printing-Presses; and do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

My invention is intended as an improvement 011 the Letters Patent No. 149,104, granted to Wm. W. Grozier March 31,1874; and it consists in providing the elastic strip with a series of perforations at equal distances apart, and operating the same by means of a cogged or toothed pinion. It also consists in a curved guide, through which the elastic strip passes to conduct the strip out of the reach of the rollers and prevent it from striking the form, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is.a perspective view of my printing-press guide, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.

A represents a plate of any suitable dimensions, having its inner end turned down, as shown at a, to be fastened between the platen of an ordinary printing-press and the clamping-frame that holds the tympan-sheet. At the outer end of the plate A is formed or attached a frame or box, B, in which is journaled a cogged or toothed wheel, 0, one of the journals of which extends through the end of the box, and is provided with a knob or small handwheel, D. Over the toothed wheel 0, across the center of the box, is secureda curved guide,

v E, which is slotted for the wheel to work in.

Through this guide passes the flexible strip G, which is provided with a series of perforations, 00, its entire length, at equal distances apart, for the teeth, or cogs of the wheel 0 to work in for moving the strip back and forth. On the inner end of the flexible strip G is the recessed head H. By means of the cog-wheel (J and perforations in the strip G the head or guide H may be readily adjusted to any desired location on the platen or tympan-sheet, the plate being moved as required and it is not liable to derangement from feeding heavy cards, 850., when once set.

By the curved guide E the strip Gr is so conducted in its outward movement as to carry it out of the reach of the rollers and to prevent it striking the form.

I am aware that an adjustable flexible strip provided with a recessed head, in feed-guides for printing-presses, is not new and I do not claim such as being, broadly, my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a feed-guide for printing-presses, the flexible strip G, provided with the recessed headHand a series ofequidistant perforations, m, in combination with a guide for the strip, and a cog-wheel, O. for operating the same, substantially as herein set forth.

2. The curved guide E, in combination with the flexible perforated strip G and cog-wheel O, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

3. The combination of the plate A, box B,

cog-Wheel G, curved guide E, and flexible perfor-ated strip G, with head H, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
