Description

J. El MOUNEY.
Hydrants.
Patented Aug.,3, 1875.
WWI/Wm UNITED ySTATES.
PATENT GEEICE.
JOSEPH AE. MOONEY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO T. F. EIGEL- BEBNER & OO., OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HVDRANTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,401 dated August 3, 1875; application led i May 17, 1875.
To all whom fit may conce/rn Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. MooNEY, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrants; and
I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to hydrants or pumps; and it consists in a stationary valve-boX,with valve forming an interior plunger, and a movable cylinder working on the outside thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled inthe art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in whichy Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section on line .r w, Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of the cup A.
A represents a cup or box, of any suitable dimensions, open at the top, and provided at its bottom with a pipe, B, through which the water enters from the main. In the upper end of the cup or box' A is screwed a valveseat, C, constructed in the forin of a piston or plunger, and provided with exterior packing a. b is the valve in the center of the plunger, held closed by means of a spring, d, and formed or provided at its upper end with a projecting key-seat, c. Surrounding the piston and valve-box thus constructed is a cylinder, D, open at its lower end, and closed at the upper end, with a pipe, E, screwed into the center of its upper end, said pipe forming the operating-rod connecting the cylinder with the handle G, as well as the outlet for the Water to the spout I. The pipe E extends into the cylinder D sufficiently far, so that when the handle G is depressed it will come in contact with the projecting key-seat c and open the valve.
By thus constructing the hydrant it will readily be seen that no dirt can in any way get into the water, and when the hydrant closesby the raising of the handle all the Water in the pipe E and cylinder D will at once pass out, the lower end of the cylinder being made slightly daring for that purpose, and thus preventing the hydrant from freezing.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Thestationary valve-box A, with inletpipe B, piston G, attached to the box, and valve b, in combination with the exterior movable cylinder D and pipe E, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth'.
2. In a hydrant, the combination of the valve-box A, inlet-pipe B, piston O, with packing c, valve b, spring d, key-seat e, exterior movable cylinder D, pipe E, handle G, and spout I, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I aiflx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH E. MOONEY.
Witnesses T. H. ALEXANDER, W. C. MGARTEUE.
