SIGMUND FEUST, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CONVERTIBLE ROCKING-CHAIRS AND. SWINGS- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. "$6,269, dated August 3, 1875; application filed June 26, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SIGMUND FEU'sT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Convertible Rocking-Chair and Swing, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 represents a front view; Fig. 2, a side view of my improved convertible rockingchair and swing, showing it in use as a rocking-chair. Fig. 3 shows a side View of the same in position as a swing; and Fig. 4 is a detail view of a corner of the seat, showing method of storing the suspension-cords.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
My invention is int-ended to provide an improved article of furniture that combines the advantages of a rocking-chair and swing, so as to be used for either purpose, as desired.
The invention consists of a chair with hinged rocker and leg sections, which are capable of being rigidly applied as rockers for a chair or as side arms for a swing-seat. Below the hinged seat of the chair is a box or recep tacle for the reception of the suspension-cords attached to the frame of the chair, they being stored in such a manner within the receptacle as not to prevent the closing of the seat.
In the drawing, A represents the chairframe, with back part A and hinged seatseo tion B, that may be thrown up toward the back. To the sides of the frame- A are hinged the legs 0, with their connecting-rockers D, so that they may be used as rockers, as shown in Fig. 2, or be thrown up against the back to form the side arms of the seat when used as a swing, as shown in Fig.3. The leg-sections may be secured, by hooks and eyes, springclasps, or other suitable devices, to the back A when used as a swing, and to rear extensions of the back when used for a rockingchair. The extension-legs may, however, be dispensed with when the hinged leg-sections are laterally braced in suitable manner, or secured by sliding lock-bolts of the back or otherwise rigidly in position for locking. A receptacle or box, IE, is arranged below the hinged seat in the frame of the chair for receiving and storing away the suspension-cords swing furnishes a very useful article to be employed in either manner, in or out of doors, as found most convenient.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A convertible rockingehair and swing, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of a seat with hinged leg and rocker sections, that may be rigidly secured in position either as rockers for a chain or as side arms for a swingseat, substantially as specified.
3. In combination with a chair, the suspension-cords, the hinged seat, and the box or receptacle below the seat to allow the storing of the cords, substantially as specified.
4;. The combination of the seat-frame A,
perforations a, grooves a, and receptacle E, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
