FOLDAZBLE TOURIST BED.

Theinvention relates to collapsible automobile beds particularly.adapted for.use in connection with the running board thereof and comprising a casing intowhich the bed 8 is folded after it is collapsed, and constructed in a manner, that whenextended, the top. or canopy thereof is suliiciently high to allow a person to stand erect while dressing, adjacent the outerendof the bed, which to is particularly desirable for-use by-women in touring and camping.

A further object is to provide the outer end of the bed frame with an outwardly and downwardly inclined U-shaped frame,

16 the arms of whichare pivotally connected to the bed frame and cooperate with the cross bar ofthe bedframefor maintaining the bed frame in ahorizontal position and the end wall of the tent spaced a-substantial 20 distance-from the ends ofthe frame, thereby allowing a person-to stand erectadjacent the end oftheframe while dressing. Also to provide an upwardly and outwardly inclined foldable ;U-.shaped frame having its an arms pivotally connected to the end of the bed frame and coo erating with the upper end of the tent ab ove the supporting leg engaging point and above the headfof a person.

A further object is to attach the end of; the tent to the uppeivend of the cabinet andto extend said tent overthe upwardly and outwardly inclined frame, thence downwardly over the outer end of the U-shaped member forming supporting legs, and thence inwardly and anchored to the cabinet, beneath the bed frame, thereby preventing upward drafts from reaching'occupants of the bed, and at the same time forminga covering for 40 the ground adjacent the outer end of the bed frame on which a person may stand while. dressing.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the cabinet into which the bed is folded, and which cabinet maylbeiplaced on an automobile running'boai'd Orin-any other suitable position, however it is provided with a chamber 2 having. its-outer side open. Hingedly ,mounted at .3 within the chamber 2 is the bed frame l, which bed frame is formed from two sectionshingedly connectedat 5 whereby said sections may be folded ontoeach other as shown'in Figure 4:. The bed frame .4 isprovided -with a canvas bottom (3,which is connected to the .railslof the frame at7, and on which canvas-bottom bed clothing may be placed. It will be noted that the hinging points 5 arebelow the bed frame sections whereby their endsr8 will abutfor maintaining the sections in the same plane when extended. It has been found in foldable beds for automobile and camping purposes the outer ends thereof are not sufliciently high when extended to allow a person to standerect while dressing, adjacent the end of the bed, and to, obviatethis difliculty the outer end of the bedframe 4 haspivotally connected thereto at 9 the outwardly and downwardly inclined arms 10, of

the Ushaped frame .11 which extends out wardly afsubstantial distance fromouter end of the bed frame l; and engages the inner sideof the tent 12 at 18, thereby maintainingthe outer wall 14 of the tent 12 spaced a substantial distance from the outer end of the bed frame, thereby providing a space sufficiently large for a person tostand erect in the tent adjacent the end ofithebed frame. The arms 10 0fthe U-shaped frame 1 1 engage the end bar 15. of the bed frame 4 and limit'the downward movement of the frame to a position substantially in a horizontal plane. a

Pivot-ally connected at 16to upwardly extending plates 17 carried by the opposite sides of the bed frame 4 are upwardly and outwardly inclined arms 18, to the upper ends of which are pivotally connected at 19 an inverted U-shaped frame 20, and which frame is maintained in the plane of the arms 18 by means of pins 21 which extend through registering apertures in the arms 18 and the arms of the frame '20. The outward pivotal movement of the arms 18 is limited by the engagement of the shoulders 22 thereof with the upper side of the bed frame, and to a position where it will engage at 23 the tent 12 substantially in the same vertical plane as the point 13, thereby maintaining the wall 1-l in substantially a vertical plane. It will be noted that the canvas tent 12 is sufiiciently large whereby the canvas tent will be maintained stretched when the bed is extended, and the portion 521 of said tent inclines downwardly and inwardly and is anchored at 25 to the upper end of the cabinet 1, and being inclined will shed water. It will also be noted that the bottom portion 26 of the tent inclines upwardly and inwardly beneath the bed frame 4 and is anchored at 27 within the cabinet chamber 9., thereby preventing drafts from passing upwardly through the bed and into the tent compartment. It will be noted that the arms 10 and frame 20 are sufficiently long, when extended the outer end of the tent is maintained sufliciently high to allow a person to stand erect when dressing in the tent, which is particularly desirable for use by women while touring or camping. It will also be noted that the outer end of the portion 26 of the tent extends beyond the end of the bed frame a substantial distance and will form a covering for the ground on which a person may stand while dressing.

When it is desired to collapse and fold the bed the pins 21 are removed and the U- shaped frame 20 is folded to a position between the arms 18 and then the arms 18 with the frame 20 therebetween are folded onto the upper side of the bed frame as shown in full line in Figure 3. After the above operation the parts are moved to a dotted line position a in Figure 3, and the U-shaped supporting frame 11 is folded inwardly within the outer end of the frame 4, and after which all of the above mentioned parts are folded downwardly and inwardly as shown in dotted lines at 7), Figure 3 and thence into the chamber 2 of the cabinet 1, then the tent may be placed in the cabinet in any suitable manner.

From the above it will be seen a foldable running board bed is provided which is simple in construction, compact, may be easily extended or collapsed, and means is provided whereby the end wall of the tent is maintained spaced from the end of the bed frame thereby forming a space within the tent in which a person may stand erect while dressing.

The invention having been setforth what is claimed as new and useful is:

1. A foldable bed comprising a casing, a foldable bed frame hingcdly mounted within said casing and extending outwardly therefrom, a tent connected to the upper end of the casing, said tent extending outwardly, downwardly and inwardly over the bed frame and anchored to the casing below the bed frame, supporting legs from said frame, said supporting legs inclining dmvnwardly and outwardly and engaging the inner side of the tent a substantial distance from the bed frame and a tent engaging frame hingedly connected to the outer end of the bed frame and inclining upwardly and outwardly and terminating above the leg engaging points and in combination with the legs and tent forming a compartment beyond the end of the frame in which a person or 1 stand with his feet on the tent adjacent the legs.

2. A running board bed comprising a casing having a chamber therein, a bed frame, said bed frame comprising an inner section hingedly mounted in the lower end of the chamber, an outer section of the bed frame, a U-shaped supporting leg hingcdly connected to the outer end of the outer section and inclining downwardly and outwardly and terminating a substantial distance from the end of the outer section, a frame hingedly connected to the end of the outer bed section and inclining upwardly and outwardly and terminating in a vertical plane a substantial distance from the outer end of the bed frame and a pliable member carried by the casing and inclining outwardly over the upwardly extending frame, thence downwardly over the U-shaped supporting legs and thence inwardly under the supporting legs and anchored to the casing beneath the frame.

3. The combination with the outer end of a cabinet carried bed frame and a tent housing said bed frame, of supporting legs for said outer end of the frame, said legs inelining downwardly and outwardly and terminating spaced a substantial distance from the outer end of the frame and engaging the inner side of the tent, a frame carried by the outer end of the bed frame and inclining upwardly and outwardly and engaging the inner side of the tent and in combination with the supporting legs forming means whereby the adjacent wall of the tent is maintained in substantially a vertical plane and spaced a substantial distance from the end of the frame.

4. The combination with the outer end of a bed frame, a tent housing said frame, of downwardly and outwardly inclined legs carried by the bed frame and engaging the inner side of the tent, and an outwardly and upwardly inclined frame carried by the bed frame and engaging the inner side of the tent thereby forming from the portion of the tent a substantially vertically disposed wall spaced a substantial distance from the end of the bed frame thereby forming a comartment beyond the end of the frame the eight of the tent.

5. The combination with the outer end of a bed frame disposed within a tent, of a downwardly and outwardly extending U shaped supporting frame having its arms hingedly connected to the bed frame said arms cooperating with the bed frame for limiting the downward movement of the bed frame, arms hingedly connected to the end of the bed frame and inclining upwardly and outwardly, means for limitingthe outward inclination of said arms, a U-shaped frame hingedly connected to said last named arms, means for maintaining said last named U-shaped frame in the plane of said arms,

said U-shaped frames engaging the inner side of the tent for forming means whereby a wall of the tent is maintained spaced a substantial distance from the end of the bed frame.

6. A cabinet carried foldable bed comprising a frame hingedly mounted within a cabinet and movable to .a horizontal position, foldable upwardly and outwardly extending members carried by the outer end of the bed and extending to a position above the cabinet, downwardly and outwardly inclined supporting legs carried by the outer end of the bed and foldable onto the bed, a pliable member anchored to the cabinet and inclining upwardly and outwardly over the upwardly and outwardly inclined member, thence downwardly under the supporting legs and thence upwardly and inwardly beneath the bed and anchored to the cabinet beneath the bed.
