Description

March '13, 1928.
J. S. BRENNAN ORNAMENTAL LIGHTING STRUCTURE Filed July '7. 1926 Patented Mar. 13, 1928.
' UNITED STATES JAMES S. BRENNAN, OF ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
ORNAMENTAL LIGHTING STRUCTURE.
Application filed July 7,
This invention relates to an ornamental lighting structure which comprises ornamental holders for electric lights and means for connecting the same with an electric circult, and which is particularly adapted for use in connection with certain religious ceremonies, such, for example, as funerals.
Since, in certain religious ceremonies it is customary to use lighted candles or tapers, and the open flame therefrom is liable to ignite draperies or the clothing of those present, I have provided a lighting structure comprising ornamental supports for electric lamps and bearing ornamentation of the character associated with such religious ceremonies, whereby the appearance of ordinary tapers may be simulated and the hazard of fire by reason of open flame entirely elimi nated.
Referring to the drawings:
1? 1 is a perspective view of the orna mental lighting structure, wherein the lighting elements are arranged after the manner commonly employed in the conduct of fu- Fig. 2 an elevational View of one of the ornamental supports or lighting elements, and illustrating a form of ornamentation as applied thereto, and,
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the ornan'iental support or lighting element shown in Fig. 2.
The structure as shown in the drawings comprises stands or holders 1 which may be of any desired construction and which are each provided with an open recess for receiving the base of one of the ornamental supports or lighting elements to hold the same .in'upright position. 4
One of the ornamental supports or light lug elements 2 is carried by each of the stands 1, the base thereof fitting within the recess at top of the stand as indicated at 3.
Each of the lighting elements 2 is formed of quasi cylindrical shape and provided with a base portion 5 which fits within the recess at the top of a stand 1. The upper end portion of each member 2 is tapered as at 4: to more closely resemble the appearance of a candle, and is provided with a socket 6 within which is threaded an ornamental lamp 7 which may be so shaped as to resemble the form and appearance of an open flame. A bore 8 extends throughout a portion of the member 2, substantially centrally 1926. Serial No. 120,934.
thereof, and connects with a lateral opening 9 formed in the side wall of the member 2. A plug 10 is )ositioned in the opening 9 and is secured agr inst accidental removal therefrom by a screw 11, the plug being provided upon its outer extremity with electrical terminals 12 and 13 of conventional form. The terminals 12 and 13 are electrically connected with the lamp socket and base by means of wires 1% andil5 which may be encased in the usual cord 16.
Upon the outer surface of the member 2 is positioned ornamental bands 17 and 18, which are spaced from each other, and a suitable ornamental plaque 19 is secured to the member 2 intermediate the bands 17 and 18. y I
lVhen positioned in the stands or holders 1, the members 2 are connected to a source of electric current 20 by amain cord 21, multiple connector 22 and individual cords 23 which carry connections 2 1 adapted to be rcmovably connected to the tern'iinals 12 and 18 to conduct the electric current to the lamps 6 through the wires 14 and 15.
lhe'ornamental structure shown provides a portable and ornamental lighting structure capable of being quickly and easily as sembled or disassembled, and which simulates the appearance of ordinary tapers, while obviating entirely the fire hazard due to the use of ordinary candles or tapers.
What I claim is: y I In an ornamental lighting structure, a support formed to simulate the appearance of a taper and providedwith a central longitudinal bore extending throughout a portion only of its length, a lamp base secured to said support adjacent to one end of said here, an electric lamp carried by said base, ornamental bands surrounding said support and secured thereto, a lateral opening formed in the wall of said support intermediate the ends thereof and cmnnmnicating with the central bore, a plug ren'iovably s-ecured in said lateral opening and serving as a closure therefor, said plug being provided with electric terminals, means within the bore for connecting the terminals of said plug with the lamp base, and a removable connection for connecting said terminals with an electric circuit.
In testimony whereof I have atfixed my signature.
JAMES S. BRENNAN.
