HAIR-WAVING DEVICE.
Application filed November 19, 1927. Serial No. 234,455.
My invention relates to improvements in hair waving devices, and the object of the invention is to devise a simple device which may be readily used in the home and which will not be costly to manufacture and easily manipulated, and it consists essentially of a hair supporting member having a comb por tion extending from one end adapted to be inserted in the hair adjacent the roots thereof so that the portion of the hair to be waved will lie upon the supporting member, and means for holding and retaining the hair in its waved posit-ion until set as hereinafter more articular-1y explained by the following specifi cation. I
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my device used for marcel waving.
Figs. 2 and 3 are the members of my device shown in Fig. 1 separated apart.
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the device as applied to water waving.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional View through Fig. 1.
In the drawing like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
1 indicates the hair supporting member which is provided on its upper face with oppositely directed transverse grooves 2 and 3 arranged to form a wavy or serpentine ridge therebetween extending adjacent one end of the member to adjacent the opposite end. The upper end of the member is formed by a comb portion 4, the prongs of which extend longitudinally of the member, the comb portion being connected by small connecting portions 1 at each end of the comb to the body of the member 1, which portions may be of heat non-conducting material so that when the member 1 is heated up the heat will. not travel into the comb and burn the head of the user.
The under face of the member 1 is chambered out as indicated at Sand is provided with a cover plate 6. lVithin the chamber is a heating element 7 connected at its ends to the terminals 8 and 9.
10 is a cover plate which corresponds substantially to the shape of the upper surface of the supporting plate 1 so that when one plate is fitted over the other it grips the hair to be waved therebetween so as to give it a wavy eifect, the members 1 and 10 being clamped together at suitable points by clips 11 and 12 arranged at any desired point and which may be of any desired construction. The hair passing through the comb may also be clipped to the comb by a similarly constructed clip 13.
\Vhen it is desired to wave the hair all that is necessary to do is to moisten the hair' with a suitable waving fluid, gather a portion of the hair together insert the comb portion 4 into the hair as indicated in Fig. 5, pass the hair over the surface of the supporting plate 1 and then place the cover plate in position securing the same by clips 11 and 12. The device is then connected by the terminals 8 and 9 to an electric circuit, the device being heated by the elements 7 so that the hair is baked in the usual way and the wave set therein.
If it is desired to water wave the hair I employ a modification of my device as indicated in Fig. 4 which consists of a supporting member substantially in the same shape as that indicated in Fig. 3 with the exception. that the prongs of the comb instead of being only at the upper end of the plate extend through the body of the plate adjacent to its opposite enc. The hair is moistened by a suitable waving fluid and the comb inserted therein, the hair lying upon the upper surface of the comb and being clipped thereon by any suitable clips or other means, such as elastic bands which will retain the hair in position when waved so as to set as the fluid drys.
If desired the member 2 may be utilized for producing a water wave, that is to say,
the hair is laid in position upon the top of this member and the heating element attached so as to produce a drying heat which will dry out the hair in the wave form Without applying the cover member 10. By this means the extensive time required for dry ing out the hair normally is eliminated and the water waving operation completed in a short space of time.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A hair waving device comprising a hair supporting member having a comb at the upper end adapted to-engage the roots or the hair, and means in the supporting member for holding the hair so that it will lie in alternate directions throughout its length to form a wave.
2. A hair Waving device comprisingahair hair in the arranged position and a comb at one end of the plate to engage the hair at the roots.
3. A hair waving device comprisinga hair supporting member in the form of a plate provided with transverse grooves through which the hair is passed alternately in opposite directions, means for holding the hair in the arranged position, and a heating element incorporated in the structure For dr ving the hair and a comb atone end of the plate to engage the hair at the roots.
4-. A hair waving device comprising a hair supporting member formed with transverse grooves through which the hair is passed alternately in opposite directions, a cover plate correspondingly formed to hold the hair in position within the grooves, means for securing the hair supporting member and cover plate together, and a heating element incorporated in the structure for drying the hair and a comb at one end of the plate to engage the hair at the roots.
A hair waving deviee comprising a hair supporting member having a comb at the upper end adapted to engage the roots of hair, and means for holding the hair so that it will lie in alternate dirta-tions from end to end of the portion to be raved against one fare of the hair snpportin; member.
