INVENTORS HAROLD G l-6 MARSHALL NQBLE A TTORNEYS HAIR REFORMING DEVICES The present invention relates generally to devices suitable for use in the re-forming of hair. More particularly, the invention relates to devices comprising the combination of a re-forming member and co-operating member so constructed as to provide a hair re-forming surface over which a tress of hair may be made to conform.
In the re-forming of hair, for example in the per manent waving of hair, it has been conventional to use hair re-forming rods around which the hair is wound. Using such hair re-forming rods the hair stylist starts with the free end of the hair, which is the oldest hair, and winds the hair around the rod towards the scalp. As a result of adopting this technique the smallest or tightest curl induced in the hair wound upon the rod is at the free end of the hair while the biggest or loosest curl is adjacent to the scalp. Thus the curl induced in the hair is not uniform. Further, as a result of this technique it is not possible preferentially to treat various sections of the hair with a hair-treating fluid, such as a permanent waving solution.
Because the hair becomes more receptive to a permanent waving solution as it grows older, since it becomes more porous, and because it is not possible separately to treat different portions of a tress of hair, the existing technique means that the result of the reforming operation is frequently that of producing a hair style disfigured by frizzy ends. This is because the older hair, having been treated with the same amount of treatment solution as the newer hair, absorbs more of the solution and curls faster. It will be appreciated that more time is required before the solution is effective on new hair due to its lower porosity.
Because of these disadvantages it would be desirable to have hair re-forming devices available which provide for the differential treatment of various portions of the hair in accordance with their age and which make possible the control of wave length in the hair.
Another disadvantage of the existing technique is that it is physically impossible to make the curl commence near the scalp because of the minimum distance which a rod can approach to the scalp.
The presence of tight wave formations as close to the scalp as possible is often referred to as the provision of body" in a hair style. The body of the hair formations tends to assist the overall hair style in maintaining its desired arrangements.
When it is desired to produce body in a hair style this could best be produced by inducing a curl as close to the scalp as possible. Without a curl being induced close to the scalp the initial section of the hair tends to lie flat on the scalp and curls induced in the intermediate length of the hair are not as effective in producing body in the hair style. It would accordingly be desirable to have available devices capable of inducing a curl adjacent to the scalp in order to introduce as much body as possible into the hair style.
Yet again the existing devices available for use in the moulding or re-forming of hair are such that it is desirable to allow a minimum time to elapse between successive permanent waving treatments. This is because most human hair cannot safely stand two or more immersions in permanent waving solution without being subjected to weakening or permanent damage and because it is impossible preferentially to treat different portions or lengths of hair. If it were possible to separate untreated hair from previously treated hair it would not be necessary to wait until the treated hair has completely grown out before reforming.
It takes in the region of from three to six months before hair can be re-permed without risking damage under existing techniques and it can be seen that the provision of hair re-forming devices which could make possible the treatment of previously untreated hair while avoiding the treatment, and hence damage, of previously treated hair would enable a permanent waving style to be maintained for long periods of time and would avoid the need to ensure prolonged periods of time during which the hair is shapeless and unsightly.
The present invention provides devices suitable for use in the re-forming of hair which makes possible the provision of curls close to the scalp and carefully control the wave length in the hair, and which also enables different portions of the hair to be treated preferentially. The present invention accordingly provides a device suitable for use in the re-forming of hair which comprises a convoluted body portion provided with a series of alternating ridges and depressions extending generally transversely of the body portion, said convoluted body portion defining at least one shaped surface having a wave-like longitudinal configuration, wave crests being defined by said ridges and wave troughs being defined by said depressions, said shaped surface being adapted to provide a hair re-forming surface to which a tress of hair laid over said body portion may be made to conform, and said body portion being perforated thereby to enable a hair treatment fluid to be applied to a tress of hair conforming with said shaped surface.
In use of the devices, hair is made to conform with the shaped surface by means of at least one co-operating member adapted to engage in a depression in the body portion of the device. A tress of hair is laid over the shaped surface and the co-operating member or members then placed over the hair. Engagement of a co-operating member with a depression then causes the hair to assume the shape of the shaped surface.
The present invention will now be described in more detail by reference to specific embodiments thereof as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of one form of hair reforming device together with a support or co-operating member;
FIG. 2 is an elevation illustrating the device and support or cooperating member of FIG. 1 in working relationship;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of an alternative form of hair re-forming device in accordance with the invention;
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of an embodiment of a hair re-forming device together with an alternative form of co-operating member;
FIG. 5 is a perspective view illustrating a method of utilizing the hair re-forming devices of the invention; and
FIGS. 6, 7 and 8 are elevations illustrating different wave forms for the devices.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals denote like integers throughout, the hair re-forming devices of the present invention can be seen to comprise a body portion 1, of generally convoluted configuration, provided with a series of alternating ridges 2 and depressions 3 therebetween extending generally transversely of the body portion 1. The ridges and depressions define shaped upper and lower surfaces on body portion 1 having a wave-like longitudinal configuration.
It should be appreciated that the devices illustrated may be used in such a manner that either the upper or lower shaped surface may be utilized to shape the hair and that accordingly the terms ridges and depressions are relative terms. Thus when one surface is being considered a convex convolution is a ridge but the same convolution is a depression when the other surface is being considered. Bearing this point in mind the shaped surfaces can be seen to comprise wave crests corresponding to the ridges and wave troughs corresponding to the depressions. The shaped surfaces are perforated either by apertures as illustrated in FIG. 3 or, in the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 1, comprises a mesh.
FIG. 1 illustrates a co-operating member 5 adapted to engage in the depressions 3 in the shaped member 1.
As illustrated in FIG. 1 the co-operating member 5 comprises an unperforated convoluted support of generally the same overall dimensions as the device 1 and member 5 are pressed together they take up the close working relationship illustrated in FIG. 2. As illustrated in FIG. 4 the co-operating member may comprise a plurality of tubes 6 supported on a frame 7. Frame 7 comprises a pair of spaced parallel wires 8 along which the tubes 6 are free to move, the wires 8 being maintained in their spaced parallel relationship by means of terminal bars 9. The tubes 6 may also be rigidly mounted on the wires 8 if use demands that this feature would be more convenient. Successive tubes 6 are generally parallel and are so dimensioned that they may be retained within depressions 3 by means of the closure of the ridges 2 thereabove. The tubes 6 are free to slide along wires 8 so that they may be used with a variety of re-forming devices 1, the amplitude of the waves of which may vary. Further adjacent tubes 6 may be utilized in such a way that they cooperate not only with adjacent depressions 3 but also, if desired, with, for example, every other depression depending upon the result desired.
In the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 8 it can be seen that the convoluted device 1 is provided with a series of waves defined by successive ridges 2 and depressions3, the amplitude of which waves is less at one end of the device than at the other. Such a device is particularly suitable for the introduction of body into the hair style since the wave of least amplitude is adapted to induce a curl in the hair very close to the scalp. Alternative wave forms are illustrated in FIGS. 6 and 7. In FIG. 6 is illustrated a wave form suitable for inducing a long wave into the hair and in FIG. 7 is illustrated a wave form suitable for inducing a deep wave into the hair. Various combinations of wave forms can be incorporated into a single device if desired in order to induce waves of unusual configuration into the hair.
The devices of the invention preferably are made from a resilient material such that a cooperating member 5 may be pressed between the ridge 2 into the depressions 3 and there be releasably held by the natural resilience of the material from which the device is fabricated. As can be seen from the device illustrated in FIG. 2 each shaped surface of the device 1 may comprise a series of waves such that the distance between the adjacent wave crests, as represented by the symbol y, is less than the maximum length of the wave trough, as represented by the symbol x, therebetween. Clearly in such a case the cooperating member should be so dimensioned that it is provided with ridges having a length, or in the case of a cylindrical member such as tubes 6 a diameter, greater than the distance y between adjacent ridges 2 but less than the maximum length x of the depression 3 therebetween. The dimensions of the cooperating member and of the re-forming device will clearly be chosen to provide for efficient clamping of a tress of hair over a shaping surface of a device 1 without applying too great a constrictive force thereto such as could cause severance or breaking of the hair.
While it is preferred to utilize the natural resilience of the material from which the device is fabricated in order to achieve cooperation between the device and a cooperating member, such cooperation may be achieved in other ways. Thus, for example, a device and a cooperating member may be held together by such fasteners as elastic bands, clips, buttons, and other detents.
The amplitude of the successive waves in the shaped surfaces of the devices will be chosen as illustrated by FIGS. 6, 7 and 8 with a view to securing the desired configuration in the hair and a wide variation in the wave form of the shaping devices is contemplated in accordance with the present invention. The length of the shaping device may be adjusted as desired, clearly the longer the hair to be treated the longer is the device required. The width of the re-forming device may also be varied depending upon the size or the width of the tresses to be treated. In general suitable widths for the re-forming device are from about 2 inches to about 6 inches. The shaped surfaces of the devices of the invention or the cooperating surfaces of the cooperating members may be grooved or roughened in such a way that slippage of a hair tress laid over the surfaces is minimized. By this means it is possible to exercise good control over the hair styling process.
As illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 5 the devices preferably comprise a wave of smaller diameter at one end, the left hand end as illustrated thus making it possible to induce a tight curl adjacent the scalp and impart body to the hair.
When the hair re-forming devices of the present invention are used the stylist selects the tress of hair whichhe desired to treat and lays it over a shaped surface of a shaping device 1 preferably with a small diameter wave, if provided, adjacent the scalp. A cooperating member, which may be the mate of the shaping device 1, an unperforated correspondingly convoluted support member as illustrated in FIG. 1 or a succession of tubes or rods 6 illustrated in FIG. 4, is then laid over the hair and the cooperating member and the shaping device pressed into nesting or mating engagement one with the other. The hair between the shaping device and the cooperating member thereupon assumes the shape of the hair shaping surface of the device and a hair treatment fluid, such as a permanent waving solution, may be applied to the tress of hair either through the perforations in the shaping device 1, or, when the arrangement of FIG. 4 is utilized, over the cooperating member. The final arrangement of the devices when applied to tresses of hair upon the head of an individual is illustrated by FIG. 5.
The particular configuration of the devices of the present invention makes it readily possible to apply different amounts or concentrations of the hair treating fluid to different lengths or portions of the hair in accordance with the result desired. Thus, for example, when hair is being re-permed the permanent waving solution may be applied only to previously untreated portions of the hair. Further, older hair, namely the hair nearest to the free ends of the hair may be treated with a lesser amount of the treating solution in recognition of the fact that such portions of the hair are more porous and consequently more readily curled than are the younger portions of the hair nearer to the scalp. This makes possible the production of either a nonuniform or uniform hair curl or shape as desired without the objectionable frizzy ends produced using the techniques previously available.
The time required to produce a hair shape in a tress of hair using the devices of the invention is very short since the operating steps are very simple and do not require prolonged winding of a tress of hair upon a rod or mandrel. Thus, the styling of hair when carried out using the devices of the present invention is a much shorter operation than has hitherto been possible utilizing the the rod technique. Furthermore, application of the hair treating fluid to the hair is simple and may be achieved by means of sprays, pads or brush as desired. The amount of treating fluid applied may be controlled also by varying the proportion of apertures in the shaped surface. Thus, the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 1 which illustrates the use of a meshed shaping surface, makes possible the application of the maximum amount of hair treating medium in the most effective manner.
The devices in accordance with the invention are of light weight and may readily be fabricated'using conventional moulding techniques. They may be stamped out of sheets of suitable plastics material having the required resilience or flexibility or they may be moulded by means of injection or blow molding techniques. They may be transluscent if desired and, as mentioned above, may be of different sizes and configurations. The devices may also be colored in such a way that devices having a particular configuration can readily be identified for use by the hair stylist. Should the stylish wish to increase the amplitude of the waves in the shaped surface it may be done in the case of flexible devices by pressing the ridges together by means of, for example, an elastic band or other compressive device fixed longitudinally of the devices. The material out of which the devices are fabricated is not critical provided that the material is chemically resistant to the various hair treatment fluids applied during the course of the hair reforming process. Most suitably the material is a resilient, flexible, plastics material since devices made out of such materials are readily produced on a mass production basis and are simple to use. Altematively, the devices may be made from thin sheets of metal stamped into the desired configuration or may be made from metal wire woven into a shaped mesh.
