UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER W. STEWART, OF BOSTON, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN J. HALEY, OF NEWTON, AND HENRY O. MORSE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-SWEEPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [66,232, dated August 3, 1875; application filed June 27, 1874.
cause it to re-enter. the box and thereby replace the brush.
In the drawings, A represents the movable box or bearing for the spindle, B the brushshaf't, and G the end board.
In Figures 1 and 2 the brush-shaft must be inclined and the box swung round on the pivot a, in order to insert the brush then, if the brush-shaft and the box he moved together into place, as indicated by the dotted lines, the spindle will gradually enter the box, as will be clear Without further explanation.
In Fig. 3 the set-screw b must be loosened and the brush-shaft inclined as before, and the box A brought into such a position that the spindle will enter it. Both are then brought into place together, and secured there by the set-screw b.
This set screw is not required in Fig. 1, as the plate A, forming the movable box, is broadened at the top, and comes in immediate contact with the cover when it is closed, and is by it held with sufficient steadiness to secure a proper working position to the brush.
What I claim as my invention is The adjustable bearing-plate A, pivoted to V the end of the box, or slotted, and held by a set-screw, and adapted to receive and release the spindleB of the brush-shaft, and to hold it firmly against displacement when brought into a proper working position, substantially as set forth.
