BANDEAU.

My invention relates to a new and useful bandeau of the nettype, for keeping` hair or the head dress in position, in an orderly manner, and to prevent the same from fly ing loosely or from becoming deranged..

My invention relates more particularly to a new and useful construction in a bandeau of the character stated, which will be `inexpensive to manufacture, which will be durable, one which will havea highly pleasing and ornamental appearance, in addition to its extreme utility, and one which may be applied to the hair or head dress with the greatest facility and ease, and afford the greatest comfort to the wearer. i

fith the above ends in view, my invention consists of a bandeau comprising an elastic open knitted netting, formed in a flat and generally oblong condition, upon any suitable circular or flatknitting machine, and having fitted to one of itslongitudinal edges, a preformed head band of a rela tively non-elasticl and firm, woven, or other textile material, which is affixed to said longitudinal edge, simultaneously with the formation of the netting.

My invention further consists of a knitted border along the outer edge of said preformed .head band and a suitable elastic band extending along the opposed longitudi` nal edge ofthe netting, and interlaced with the outermost series of terminal loops of said edge, and having its end terminating and secured to the preformed head-band, se as to form a continuity with said head-ban ih the free ends of the latter extending beyond the netting loosely, so that they may be tied in a knot in the back of the head thereby to secure the head-band about the forehead.

For the purpose of illustrating my inven tion, I have shown in the 'accompanying drawings, forms thereof which are at present preferred by me, since they will give in practice, satisfactory and reliable results, although lit is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities a novel bandeau embodying my invention, shown in the mounted position. i

Figure 3 represents a fragmentary plan View, on an enlarged scale, illustrating the manner in which the preformed and nonelastic head-band. is knitted to thel net-ting.

Referring to the drawings, in which like reference characters indicate like parts, 1 designates the netting of the bandeau of my novel construction, knitted in a flat condition upon any suitable knitting machine, such as a circular or flat knitting machine, and said netting is formed of parallel chains of interlocking stitches 2, connected by suitable sets of spaced and preferably staggered transversely extending threads 3, interconnecting the chains' of interlocking stitches 2, so as to form an open netting which will be highly elastic.

To one of the longitudinal edges 4, of the netting 1, a pre-formed head-band 5 is secured, simultaneously with the knitting of the netting, in a manner shown particularly in Figures 2 and 3. Thus, the edge L of the netting 1 is formed with a pair of relatively closely spaced parallel rows of interlocking chain stitches 6 and 7, respectively, interconnected by a series of closely spaced transverse threads 8. The preformed headband may be any suitable woven or other textile material, such as a ribbon or the like. and applied to the edge of the netting as it is being knitted, so that the rowv of outermost chain stitches 7, as Well as the interconnecting transverse threads 8, will pass Y through the preformed head-band 5, thereby permanently afliiiing the same to the edge l of the netting 1.

A knitted border 9 may be applied to the outer edge of the headband 5 by knitting two parallel rows of chain stitches 10 and 11 to the free edge of said head band, and a series of interconnecting transverse threads 12.

The preformed headband 5, of any woven `or other textile material, is considerably longer than the netting, and is provided with two free ends 13, whereby the same the head-band 5 at points 19.

'The elastic band 16 may be wrapped around the head-band 5 at the two opposed ends of the netting, designated by the numerals 19, or may beV otherwise secured thereto. By this means the netting is drawn together at the two ends, as shown particularly at Figure 2,'so as to lit the shape of the Vhead'. Thus, in1applying the bandeau of my novel construction to the head, it is merely stretched over the head with the elas` tio band 16 maintaining the head band taut v`while applying the same, and thereafter the free ends 13 of the he`ad-band 5 are tied in the rear of the head in a knot 14.

The advantage and utility of the preformed headband 5, is many-fold. Thus, not only is a highly ornamental head-band produced, but a head-band is provided which also enables the bandeauto be permanently and securely tied to the head in a knot in the rear of the head and a head-band is produced, moreover', which will be relatively firm and non-elastic, with respect to the body of the elastic netting.

By this combination of relatively fn'm and non-elastic head-band and a relatively elastic and open netting, knitted to the same, a bandeau is produced which will be found more comfortable than bandeau produced heretofore, and moreover, one, which will be durable and at the same time inexpensive to produce. g y

Having thus described my invention, what I claim 4as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis:- 'y

1. A bandeau of the character stated, comprising an elastic knitted netting having a relatively non-elastic preformed textile headband knitted to the front edge thereof, said head-band havingopposed' free ends for securing the same about the head and an elastic band along the rear edge of said netting.
