In Fig. l the regulator' is shown open, permitting the passage of superheated steam from the main outlet box B, by way of the regulator G and the pipes K, to the engine cylinders. In Fig. 2 the valveI'I is shown in position to close the regulator, so that the superheated steam is sluit ott i'rom the engine cylinders, but is tree to circulate back into the boiler without being throttled.
As shown, the tubular i spindle II is formed adjacent to the valve I'I with a slot or port I controllable by ajustment oiE the internal spindle J, iitted with the hand-wheel L They slot or port I permits passage of saturated steam into and through the interior of the valve spindle II to mix with the superheated steam and thus to regulate the degree of superheat.
In the end of the internal spindle .I is a narrow passage J which may be brought into register with the slot or port I, so that, for example, when the engine is standing, a limited volume oi steam may be admitted by way ot the said passage to the back et' the valve I-I, so as to equalize the pressure thereon, and whence such volume of steam may be led to the engine cylinders for warming the latter.
When saturated steam is to be led to Jthe cylinders for warming purposes and super-` heated steamvexcluded therefrom, the pistou valve H is moved slightly to the right of the position indicated in Fig. 2 so as slightly to uncover the port leading to the cylinders, and at the same time prevent the free flow or' superheated steam to the back of the piston valve, as illustrated in Fig. 8. It will be apparent with the Jform ot valve-operating meansdisclosed that the tubular stem I-I, together with its valve H, is susceptible of rotation on its axis, whereby the elongated portion of the valve may be moved from the position shown in Fig. 2 through an arc oit 1800 or less, thus completely closing the out p let from the box B and opening up a free communication between the steam space of the boiler and the engine cylinder.
The parts above described are preferably all ot wrought and solid drawn steel.
As will be evident, the arrangement above described answers entirely the objects of the invention as above set forth.

A steam superheater comprising, in combination, main inlet and outlet boxes, a regulator comprising a cylinder itted to the outlet box and a slide-valve, a tubular valvespindle connected to and passing through said valve and exposed to saturated steam, said spindle being provided with a port through said exposed portion torthe passage` of saturated steam to the interior thereof, and a second spindle arranged within the first and having a slot adapted tobe brought into registry with said port.
