PATENT FFICE.
BILLIARD -CUE TIP.
Application filed May 16, 1927. Serial No. 191,592.
My invention relates to billiard cue tips shown in the accompanying drawings and more particularly described in the following specification and claims.
lhe object of this invention is to provlde a' billiard cue tip constructed so that it may be readily and securely attached to the one without glue or other adhesive.
' One object of the invention is to construct the cue tip with a screw-threaded stem adapted to engage a ferrule at the end of the cue, the stem being embedded in the cue tip in such manner that it cannot be readily separated therefrom.
the method of constructing the one tip, whereby a tubular stem is'slitted at one end to form prongs which upon being driven into the one tip are spread apart by a ball lodged in the tip and thereby become securely embedded in the wall of thetip.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description I proceeds, the invention further resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes may be made in the precise em bodiment of the invention herein disclosed without departing from the spirit of the 7 same.
the leather cue tip before being secured to the stem.
Figure 3 is a similar cross-sectional view through'the cue tip, with a steel ball lodged in the central cavity of the tip.
Figure t is across-sectional view through the cue tip showing the fingers formed by slitting the end of the stem, spread apart by the ball to engage the body of the one tip, 7
upon driving the stem into the latter.
Figure 5 IS a fragmentary elevat1on partly in section-showing the tip screwed I into the ferrule at the end of the cue.
A further object of the invention lies in Referring now to the letters of reference placed upon the drawings: v
A denotes a cue, B a one tip preferably formed of leather providedwith a central socket B in which is lodged a ball. C. 1)
denotes a tubular screw-threaded stem chamfered at one end to form a cutting edge D and also slitted to provide a plurality of fingers D adapted to be spread apart by the ball when driven into the body of the tip. E
is a ferrule fitted tothe end of-the cue,
tapped to receive the stemof the one tip.
Having indicated the several parts by refcrence letters, the construction and operation of the device will bereadily understood.
The stem is secured tothe one tip by driving its slitted chamfered cutting 'edge into the tip, the ball lodged in the socket of the tip spreading the divided portion of the stem as it entersthe tip, that the several prongs of the stem may be securely-embedded in the body of the cue tip. The ferrule E fitted upon the end of the cue'is tapped to receive the stem of the cue tip which is screwed thereinsee Fi ure 5.
It will be apparent that the tip may thus i be firmly secured t o the one and is not apt to be broken away from its stem through use. 7
.Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A device of the character described,
comprisinga cue tip of'yieldable material having a central socket; a ball-lodged in the 1 socket; and a screw-threaded stem slitted at one end to form fingers adapted to be spread outwardly at an angle into the body of the cuer tip upon driving it against the ball lodged insaid socket.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a one tip of 'yieldable material having a. central socket; a ball lodged in the socket; and a screw-threaded stem slitted at one end and chamfered to form fingers with a cutting edge, adapted to bejspread out-' wardly at anangleinto the body of the cue tFp 'upon driving it against the ball lodged in said socket. i
V 7 WILLIAM H.1FORD.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification. 1
