open withthe assurance that a burglar can-l not open it further from the outside when the locking device is set, and thereby obtain entrance to the premises.
Another object of the invention is to pro- Y vide a sash holderwvhichmay be cheaplyV manufactured and quickly secured on theupper portion of the lower sash after the latter is in position inthe window frame,
and to equip the device with a locking member which may be easily turned into locked or unlocked position.
A further object of the invention is'to pro-` vide a sash holder, which, when in locked position, bears gently against the upper sash until an attempt is made to move either sash,
in which case the locking member exerts lateral pressure against the side of the upper sash and renders it practically impossible to move either sash.
Having thus broadly outlined the purposes of the invention, I will now describe an vembodiment thereof with the aid of the ac-` companying drawing, in which:
.Figure 1 illustrates a sectional elevation of an upper and a lower window sash, with the sash holder in unlocked position on the latter.
Figure 2 shows a similar view with the ksash holder in locked position.
Figure 3 is a plan view of Figure2, and
Figure 4f is an enlarged section on the line 1 -4c of Figure 3. f y p Referring to the drawings, 1 designates an upper sash and A2 a lower sash of ordinary construction. kOn the latter a plate 8 is fastened as by screws 4. The sides of the plate, whichusually consists of a stamping, are turned upwards and inwards to form guides 5 Ito receive the sides yof'a slide 6. On the ends of the latter adjacent to the upper sash forwardly extending arms 7 are provided. These varms have openings 8 I. therethrough .to Asupport the ends L9 of .an
eccentric :roller .9( Itl will be noted thatithe arms should be so spaced that they may-.pass
freely between the guides 5, to permit easy insertion of the slide 6 after the guide plate has been secured in position on Tthe upper sash. i
l Through the slide an irregular opening 10 -is provided, and 11v indicates a lever kpivotally -mounted therein on the plate The lever is pivotally supported by a screw. 12 which passes through a hole 13 in the plate and takes into the upper sash 2. The front I portion l()a of the opening 10 is so shaped that the operating end 14 of the lever 11 forces the slide forward asthelever handle 15 is moved from free position 15a indicated in Figure 3 to engaging position 15b. The
back portion 10b of the opening10 should be so shapedr as to clear the heel 1la of the lever in all positions of the ylever and slide. f
n Win be noted that the Slide e with as arms 7., andthe leverpll, may be readily .stamped out as well as the plate 3, and the roller 9 and itsends 9a cheaply produced so that the device may be manufactured at a minimum cost. VMoreover the whole of the device may be quickly and cheaply installed. Firstly by securing the lplate 3 on the sash;
inserting the screw 12 throughthe hole'lS in the plate andscrewing it into the sash.
Obviously the device may be made so that the lever handle 15 turns to the right in order to unlock it instead of to the left as shown in the drawing; and, when desired, two sash holders may be employed one' on each side of the upper portion of the lowerl sash, though ordinarily it is found that one is sufticien While in the foregoing the preferred em-` bodiment of the invention has been ldescribed and shown, it is lunderstood that the construction` is susceptible to such modications as fall withinthe scope of the api y .85 secondly,`by sliding the slide 6 into position i ioo forth thereon, said plate .having a hole there-V Y through, said "guide having an irregular opening therethrough, a leverpartly seated on said plate in the irregular slide opening, a fastening means taking into said hole by which the lever is pivotally secured, an oper-l ating end on. said lever adapted to be turned against the side of said irregular opening to force said slide forward, said operating. end
extending forwardly substantially in line Wlth the movement of said sllde when the latter 1s 1n forward position, and au engaging member on the t'ront` end of said slider adapted to engage a sash.
2. Ina sash holder, the combmationo a plate having guides on its sides, a, slideV adapted to move back and orthin said guides, isaid slide having an irregular openp1ate,. an operatlng end on said lever adaptedto be turnedlagainst thesde of said irregular'opening' to `force said Slide for-V ward, said operating end extending forward i substantially in line with the movement of said s'lidewhen the latter has been moved into forwardpostion, and aneccentric roller `STEPHEN KARSZ.
revolvably mounted onthe front of said'slide
