application filed April 2,
rthis invention relates to a toy, and particularly to a toy designed to simulate a machine such as a washing machine. As is Well lniovvn, :full sized Washing machines t5 are new commonly used and one type ot washing` machine has the general structure inclu ling' a container Within which is cona clothes ino L) element, suitable ianism t provided tor operating element` y lt is an object of this inventionytherefore, to provide a very simple and inexpensive toy and one which will in a degree simulate a t'ull sis-ed Washing machine.
lt is another object et the invention to provide a toy comprisingl a small hollow body simulating a clothes container, the same having` a mechanism mounted on the top thereotl .adapted to be operated by a suitm able hand crank which will simulate Washing machine mechanism used to operate the clothes moving element ot a Washing machine.
lt is more specifically an object of the invention to provide a small hollow member having a top adapted to simulate the clotl s container ol a Washing machine, the same having a shalt mounted in a suitable bear ing on its top, said shalt having a small tly Wheel thereon and also carrying a ratchet Wheel with which a ratchet bar guided in a suitable yolre engages, which ratchet bar is pivotally connected toiand operated a hand lever` pivoted to one side ot the body.
".lfhese other obgfects and advantages ot the invention will be fully sett'orth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which:
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation ot the device, a portion thereof being broken away and other portions shown in vertical seotion, some ot the parts being shovn in ditk ferent positions in dotted lines;
Fig. :2 is a top plan View of the device, a portion thereof being` shown in ditlerent position in dotted lines; and
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line BH3 of l., vas indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the drawings7 a small body 5 is shown substantially ot cylindrical shape, or which is tapered slightly toward its upper end, said body being supported upon a plurality ot' circumterentially spaced legs 1927. semaine. leones.
ti secured thereto and adapted to rest upon the supporting surface 7. 'lille member 5 is hollow so as to have a chamber 5 therein and the body .3 is provided with a suit able lid. 8. The lid 8 comprises laterally swinging section t3 pivoted to the top of the container by the pivot 9, said section 8a being swingable as illustrated in Fig. 2, to
give access to the chamber 5t il. bea-ring,1 braolret 10 is secured to the lid 8 andwvhile this bracket may be variously made, one sim.- ple torni Which has been teun-d convenient in practice and which is illustrated in the draivingiis made from a strip ot' flat ma.- terial having` its end portions bent upward ly to torni apertured lugs l0, Ai shaft 11 is journaled in the lug-s l()a and has secured at one end thereof a comparatively heavy fly Wheel 12. llhile the shaft l1 and Wheel 152 may be held in place by any suitable means,
the enilmdiment oit the invention illustrated the same are shown as held in place by having the ends ot thev shaft provided With enlarged portions .l1a such as might be termed by upsetting the ends or said shaft. A Wheel 13 is secured to the-shaft 11 inside oit and adjacent "he inner lug 10 ott' the bracket 10. This wheel7 as shown in Figli, is in the to m ot a ratchet gear having pointed teeth of the usual ratchet type thereon. il yoke lst is secured to the top t? adjacent one side of the gear 12d, "which volte is illustrated as a simple staple or ttshapsd rod having its ends out-turned at theinner side ot the lid 8. it bar 15 extends through the yoke le and is provided on its under surface With spaced ratchet teeth 15a', said bar extending across the top of or in line With the top of the gear 13 and being piv oted one ond to an intermediate point in the lever 16 pivoted at its lo-Wer end by the pivot- 17 to a bracket or clip 18 secured to the side ol the body 5 adjacent the bottom thereof. rlhe lever 16 is shown as having spaced sides and a socket portion at its upper end in which is disposed the handle portion 16a. rlhe bar 15 at its free end has a laterally lturned portion 15 preventing movement through the yoke 1li.
.in operation the lever 16 will be oscillated by gripping the handle portion 1G thereof and the bar 15 will be reciprocated in the yoke 141-. As the bar is drawn outwardly or to the right as shown in Fig. l, gravity Will cause the bar to rest on the gear 13 and the teet r1.5 will' eno'age said teeth and rotate lll() lll) said gear, thus rotating the shaft 11 and the ily wheel l2. As the bar is moved inwardly, the inclined sides of the teeth 15u will ride over the inclined sides of the teeth on gear 13 and as said bar is not very heavy, the bar will have little or no rotating eiect on the Wheel or gear 13. The iiy Wheel 12 keeps the shaft 11 rotating in the same direction. As the bar 15 again moves outwardly, it will impart another rotating 1mpulse to the shaft `11 and the shaft 11 Will thus be kept rotatine'. The operation of the mechanism simulates in a Way the operation ol a. full sized Washing machine mech'- anism and children thus canderive great pleasure from operating the toy. rlhe section 8n of the lid may be moved'to give access to the chamber 5 and the child can place doll clothes or other articles in the chamber 5 and thus play at Washing.
While any suitable materials may be used for the device, in practice it has been found convenient to make the body 5, lugs 6 and cover 8 as Well as the handle 16a of Wood and to make the other parts of metal.
From the above description it is seen that applicant has provided a very simple structure of toy and one which will give a great deal of enjoyment to children. The parts are few and of simple construction and the.
device can be easily made and assembled and marketed quite inexpensively. vThe device has been amply demonstrated in actual prac tice and found to be very successful.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts, without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which, generally stated, consists in a device capable of carrying out the objects above set forth, in the novel parts and combinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is f 1. A toy simulating a- Washing machine comprising a body member having a chamstroke and means on said shaft to rotate the ame idly during said opposite stroke of said lever by the impulse given said shaft through said gear.
A toy constructed and arranged to siniulate a washing machine having in co1nbination, a body member having a chamber therein, 'a cover for said member, a bracket mounted on said cover, a sha'lt journaled for iree'rotation in saidbracket, a ratchet gear secured to said shaft, a lever pivoted on said body, a bar pivoted to said lever and extending over said gear, said bar having ratchet teeth on its under side, the teeth on said bar and gear being oppositely directed, guiding means for said bar permitting vertical movement thereof` about its pivot whereby said bar will turn said gear when moved in one direction, but Will ride over said gear when moved in the other direction and a ily Wheel on said shaft for rotating the same idly during said stroke of said bar in said other direction.
3. A toy constructed and arranged to simulate a Washing machine having in combination, a body member simulating a clothes` container, a cover for said member. a bracket mounted on said cover, a shaft freely revoluble insaid bracket, a reciproeating manually operated means for rotating` said shaft when moved in one direction,` adapted to move idly in the opposite direction, and a fly Wheel on said shaft for maintaining rotation of said shai't during said opposite movement of said means.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
