APPLICATION FILED MAR-15,1919.
LSQBATQQH v Patented 3,1920.
CHARLES H. HYMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug, 3, 192K}.
Application filed March 15, 1919. Serial No. 282,903.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES H. I'IYMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys of the Whirligig type, and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive toy of this character to please children which can be easily and cheaply manufactured of sheet material by stamping and punching presses.
y invention is illustrated in two slightly different forms in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1. is a plan view of a form of the toy which is designed to be held in one hand of she child and operated by the other hand; an
Fig. 2 is a similar view of a form designed to be held and operated by a single hand.
Referring to the drawing, and describing first the form shown in Fig. 1, the frame or holder of the toy is preferably made of fiat sheet metal and comprises an upper substantially semi-circular yoke 5 and a centrally depending shank or handle 6. In bearings 7 on the upper ends of the arms of the yoke is journaled a spindle 8, the ends of which preferably project beyond or overhang the bearings 7 as shown at 8. Fast on-the spindle 8 is mounted the whirler 9, which may be an object of any desired or fanciful form, but is herein shown as a disk which will preferably be embellished with variegated colors on both sides thereof.
Pivoted to the handle 6 at 10 substantially midway of its length is a lever 11, one end of which preferably terminates in a knob or handle 12. 13 and 14 designate two cords that are connected at their lower ends to the arms of the lever 11, respectively, and at their upper ends are wrapped or coiled in opposite directions around the overhanging portions 8' of the spindle 8. A convenient mode of attaching the lower ends of the cords to their lever 11 consists in notching the lower sides of the lever as shown at 11 and entering the cords in said notches, knotting the cords behind the' notches.
In'the use of this toy, the handle 6 1s grasped in one hand of the child and the lever 11 is swung up and down by the other hand grasping the knob 12. This imparts rapid rotary or spinning movements alternately in opposite directions to the whirler 9.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 2 the same structural and operative principles are embodied, but in this case the handle 6 is slightly bent laterally and terminates in a ring 15 to receive the thumb. The rocking lever 11 is pivoted to the shank or handle 6 at 10, and the lever 11 has integral therewith a downwardly extending arm 16 terminating in a ring 17 to receive the finger; the arms 6 and 16 with their rings constituting a scissors-like holding device. The opposite ends of the lever 11 are operatively connected to the spindle 8 by the cords 13 and 14:, as in the form shown in Fig. 1.
In the operation of this form of the toy, the same is grasped by the thumb and one finger of a single hand, and the scissors-like arms are alternately expanded and contracted, as illustrated by dotted lines, thereby imparting rapid rotary or whirling move ments alternately in opposite directions to the disk 9.
I claim:
1. A Whirligig toy, comprising a holder, a spindle journaled in spaced bearings on said holder, a whirling object mounted on said spindle between said bearings, a lever pivoted between its ends on said holder, and means connecting said lever with said spindle for rotating the latter in both directions from the rocking movements of said lever.
2A Whirligig toy, comprising a holder, a spindle journaled in spaced bearings on said holder, a whirling object mounted on said spindle between said bearings, a lever pivoted between its ends on said holder, and cords connected at one end to the arms of said lever respectively, and at their other ends wrapped in opposite directions around said s indle.
3. i Whirligig toy, comprising a holder formed with a yoke and a handle, a spindle jo-urnaled in the arms of said yoke, a whirling object mounted on said spindle, a lever pivoted between its ends on said handle, and cords connected at one end to the arms of said lever respectively and at their other ends wrapped in opposite directions around said spindle.
4. A Whirligig toy, comprising a holderformed with a yolre and a handle, a spindle journaled in the ends of the arms of said yoke and at its ends overhanging its bearings, a whirling object mounted on said spindle, a lever pivoted at substantially its midlength on said handle, and cords con nected at one end to the arms of said lever respectively, and at their other ends wrapped in opposite directions around the overhan ing ends of said spindle.
5. A Whirligig toy, comprising a flat holder of sheet metal formed With a sub stantially semi-circular yoke and a central depending handle, a spindle journaled in the ends of'the arms of said yoke, a Whirling object mounted on said spindle, a lever pivoted at substantially its mid-length on said handle, and cords connected'at one end to the arms of said lever respectively, and
at their other ends Wrapped in opposite di- 20 rections around said s indle.
