This invention relates to containers and in itsbroad aspect comprehends a container for matches and particularly book matches whereby the removal and ignition of the same is greatly facilitated.

The invention furthermore aims to provide an improved container forbook matches which includes means for holdingthe book in such a manner as to expose the ignition or friction surface for use and a cover en gaging and closing member which shortens the usual length ofthe outer covering flap from its free edge to its point of bend, whereby to expose said free edge of the cover flap when closed, in a non-obstructing position with respect to the ignition surface.

The invention still further comprehends a match container of the character set forth, in combination with a cigarette or cigar case which affords a convenient arrangement in that the matches are readily accessible when a cigarette or cigar is removed for smoking.

The invention seeks as a further advan tage to provide an automatically closing container for matches which makes for safety in that closing of the supply of matches is insured prior to the striking and ignition of a removed match.

Furthermore, Where the container is employed for housing book matches, it is ob vious that one of the matches when bent back permits the closing of the container cover so that the free edge of the same may be employed as a means for facilitatin the tearing off of the matchwhich is bent back.

The invention furthermore comprehends a match container which when combined with a cigarette .case, affords. a receiving s ace for burnt matches, especially where tiie user is in a place where there is no receptacle convenient for. smoking refuse.

As a still further object the invention aims to provide a device of the character set forth which is comparatively simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient in its purpose.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 10 designates the body of a carrying case or container which is provided with a hinged cover 11, and which in the preferred embodiment of the invention constitutes a combined cigarette and match case, the cigarettecontaining compartment 12 be ing separated from the match-containing compartment 13 by a partition 14:. The match-containing compartment which is broadly although not necessarily designed for book matches, is formed adjacent its end wall 15, with a transverse top bar 16 defining therebetween and the inwardly projecting or overlapping lip 17 of the end wall 15, a slot 18 through which the friction or igni tion surface 19 of the match book is exposed for use.

The closed side 20 of the match book cover is designed to restupon the bottom wall 21 of the casing, which bottom wall has hingedly connected thereto at 22, in spaced relation to the opposite end wall 23 of the match compartment, a cover member 2 1. A spring 25 functions to normally swing the cover member to a closed position with respect to the matches 26, and said cover member is provided with a reversely and inwardly bent terminal 27 the bight portion 28 ofv which terminates at the transverse bar 16. The return bent terminal 27 serves as a clip within which the free edge of the cover flap 29 of the matchbook cover is engaged to shorten said cover flap between its bending point 30 and its free edge, so that the same when closed by the cover member is disposed in a non-obstructing position with respect to the friction or ignition surface 19.

Between the hinged end of the cover member and the wall 23, a receiving space 31 is provided for the reception of burnt matches and the partition 14 at this point is notched at 32 to; facilitate the removal of the cigarette from the cigarette compartment 12. I

What is claimed is:

1. In a carrying case for the reception and enclosure of a match book, a box member having a slotted portion Within which the base of a book is positioned and through the slot of which the ignition surface is exposed, and a spring pressed cover member hinged to the case independent of the covering flap and engageable with the free edge of the covering flap of the match book for normally closing the covering flap and causing the free edge to be disposed in a nonobstructing relation to the ignition surface exposed through the slot.

2. In a carrying case for cigars, cigarettes, and the like, a compartment defined therein for the reception of a match book and a receiving space for burnt matches, said match book compartment having a slotted portion Within which the base of the book is positioned and through the slot of which the ignition surface is exposed, and a springclosed cover member engageable with the covering flap of the match book for normal ly closing the same, said cover member having an inturned flange at its free edge engaging around the free edge of the covering flap for shortening the saline between its free edge and its point'of bend whereby to dispose said free edge in a non-obstructing relation to the ignition surface.
