PATENT ,ePrice-l ADJUSTABLE FORM FOR VVRAPPING MACHINES.
Appieaton filed July 18, 1924. Serial No. 726,717.
This invention relates to improvements in adjust-able forms used in connection with Wrapping machines and has particular reterence to an adjust-able 'form used `tor sup- 5 porting paper boXes during the operation of applying the Wrapper or label on saine.
An object ot the invention is to provide a form of the above stated ycharacter which shall be readily adjustable as to length and l Width for accommodation of various sizes of boxes.
Another object ot this invention is the provision of a steel adjustable form which can be readily attached to the spur ot thetop plunger' oit' a Wrapping machine and which is adapted to permit the passage ot strippers through same for automatically releasing the box from the form after the application of the label or Wrapper. .Y
A still further object ot my invention embodies a novel construction ot the form wherein the retaining screvvs of the form are relieved ot any pressure Which is applied to the form during operation; such pressure being talren or resisted by the shoulders provided on the separate form members.
lli/Vith these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel combination and construction of the various parts and U members illustrated in a preferred embodiment in the accompanyingdrawings, described in the following specifications and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts or members, Fig. l, is a plan viewof one ot my forms, and Fig. 2, a side elevation of same.
Fig. 3 is also a plan vieur ot my torni for a box of different dimensions to that shown in Fig. l, and Fig. el is a longitudinal section taken on line l--sl of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 shows a part of a Wrapping machine which one assembly of my form in longitudinal section, and Fig. G is a plan view of the ,torni talen on line G-6 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7, is an illustration in perspective view ot the form shown in Figs. 5 and 6, with the various members in separated or spaced relation showing the details of construction.
Figs. 8, 9 and 10, are diagrammatic illustrations showing respectively three steps in the operation ot a Wrapping machine einploying my novel form.
through the bushings 27 Within the enlarged r head of the plunger 20 toa mechanism (not shown) in the upper part of the Wrapping machine which reciprocates the rods 26 inde pendently oit the plunger 20 and the middle My improved form is generally indicated by numeral 28 and `comprises the ,corner members 29, side intermediate members 30 and end intermediate members 8l.
Each corner member 29 is provided with slots in their ends which are right-angularly disposed to cach other and adapted to receive the ends of the intermediate members. rl`he intermediate members 30 are formed with shoulders 30A which abut with the ends ol' the corner members 29, and, in terms using plain intermediate members such as 8l, the corner members 29 are brought in contact with each other, the design ot my improved form being such that the screws 32, which securely hold the form together, are relieved ot any pressure during the operation ot the rollers against the form in the application ot the labels or Wrappers to the bon.
The corner members 29 are further provided with rei-tical passages 29A which are in alignment with the holes 24A of the plate 24 to permit the passage of the stripping rods 33 of the Wrapping machine. The purpose ot the stripping rods is to remove the box trom the form 28 after the application ot the Wrapper or label and they are also independently operated by suitable mechanism of the Wrapping machine not here shoWn as such mechanism is not a part et my invention.
The form 28 as shown in`Figs. 5, 6 and 7 is secured to a term supporting plate 34C. by means ot screws 35 which engage Within the threaded holes 29B ot the corner members 29. The :Form supporting plate 34C is securely attached. to the plate 25 by cap screws 25A Within the slots 251.
lorm plate 2l which is attached to the spur In a form having long side intermediate members 30, such as shown in Figs. l and 2, the members are made with integral lugs 30B having threaded holes adapted to reoeive the screws of the form supporting plate 34.
In forms having comparatively long side and end intermediate members such as is shown in Figs. 3 and 4l, I provide a special form supporting plate 36 haring longitudinally elongated slots 36A for the cap screws 37 which secure saine by engagement into one of the plurality ot threaded holes 38^ in the brackets 38. The brackets 38 have a downwardly disposed flange 38B which is threaded for cap screw 39 Within the end intermediate member 40. A pin 88C integral with the flange 38B extends within the end intermediate member 40 to more rigidly support the bracket 38.
Figs. 8, 9 and 10, show diagrannnatically, three steps in the operation ot' a Wrapping machine employing my form, In Fig. 8, the paper box 4l which has been inserted on my improved form is just passing through a pair of end pressure rolls 42 and the glued label 43 with npstanding ends has been glued to the ends of the box 41.
In the next step shown in Fig. 9, the form 28 has been lifted independently from the plate 24 to permit the inward movement of the fingers 4st which bend the upstanding ends of the glued label inwardly, whereb the downward return of the form 2S wil securely glue label ends on the inner faces of box ends, whereupon the stripping rods 33 are independently moved downwardly through the aligned openings QM and 241 to strip the labeled box fil `trom the form as clearly shown in Fig. 10.
I claim:
In an adjustable form for box wrapping machines, the combination of corner members, side intermediate members, end inter mediate members, and means securing said side and end members with said corner members, the outer vfaces of said side and end intermediate members being flush with the outer vfaces ot' said corner members, said corner members having recesses in opposite ends thereof, said side and end intermediate members being intertitting in said recesses with said corner members and in abutment therewith whereby the pressure on the sidesl of the form will be bodily resisted to relieve the said securing means.
In Witness whereof I aiiix my signature.
CHARLES POUZAR.
