. To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY J. KERSTING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county? of Hamilton and S ta'te of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartons for Half-Tones, and Noodouts, of which the following is aspecification.

11 represents a blankout of which my 1mproved tubing is constructed. 1 The blank 1s of a suitable length so that the bodies of a number of cartons of desirable lengths may be made therefrom. The blank is provided, with longitudinal creases 12, 13, 14; and 15, for locating sides 16 and 17 of the carton, which have an inside height which is type high, a bottom 18, and top flaps 19, 20, the

7 top flaps and the bottom being of equal width, namely of a width to accommodate thewidth of a half-tone or wood-cut to'be inclosed by the carton, the inclosure being hereinafter referred to as the half-toneb The bottom and thetop flaps maybe made of various widths, so as to form cartontubes of diiferent'widths, theseywidths being arranged in series forming steps of say a quarter inch difference in widths, or as may be desired, for accommodating the widths of the half-tones it is desired to place within the cartons. f

y In forming up the tubing thetop' fiaps19 and 20 are placedone upon the other, with a coating 21 of paste therebetween, so as to paste the two top flaps together and form a reinforced top 22 of double thickness for the carton tubing,to ward which the face of the half-tone is presented when received in the carton. This tubing is so formed that it may be collapsed for taking up little space and for being cut to desired lengths for accommodating half-tones it is desired to place within the same. The respective tubings may have sections of different lengths cut therefrom, one of which is shownat 23. This section is cut fromthe tubing whose inside dimensions correspond to the width of the half-tone it isfdesired to inclose and of a lengthto correspond to the length of said half-tone.

In Fig. 3 I illustrate a tubing of different width, theparts thereof being indicated by similar but primed reference numerals. End-closures for the severed section of tubing are provided, these end-closures being all of a height to correspond to the height of the tubing, which is type-high, and are:

made in selective widths to correspond to the widths of the selective tubings. It'will thus be seen that the same width of endclosure can be used for all tube-sections of corresponding width, irrespective of the Fig. 10 is a detail ping the body of the carton.

lengths of the same. Means are also provided for readily attaching these end-closures to the tube-sections and also for readily releasably closing the same. My invention enables a very great variety in sizes of cartons to be readily assembled from a minimum variety of stock-pieces. The end'closures I prefer to employ are shown at 25. These end-closures comprise an end wall 26 to which side flaps 27 are hinged by creases 28 and a bottom flap 29 is hinged by a crease 30. A gummed tape 31 is pasted alongone edge thereof to the top edge of said end wall, the other edge of said gummed tape overhanging said top edge of said end wall, forming an overhanging edge 32 provided at its inner face with a line of paste .33, by means of which when moistened, the endclosure is pasted to the end of the outer face of the top of the severed section of tubing, formingha hinge-connectionv for said endclosure. The side-flaps 2'? are received between the half-tone, shown at 34:, when received in the carton, and'the side-walls of the body of the'carton, and the bottom flap 1-9 is received between the bottom of the half-tone and the bottom 18 of the carton.

The face 35 of the halftone is protected throughout its areaby the double thickness of the top of the carton, thereby insuring said face, whether etched, engraved or produced by other method, against injury.

I prefer to provide means whereby the end-closures are releasably held closed, these means being secured to the end-closures, so that when said end-closures are attached to the body of the carton, its closing means are alsoattached in position ready for use. This is shown accomplished by means of clips 36,

which comprise an attaching plate 37, provided with prongs 38, received through the end wall26 of theend-closure, and bent at the inner, face thereof. Jaws 39 and 40 extend from said attaching plate and are ar ranged to be parallel with the bottom wall of the carton when said endclosure is closed, the ends of said bottom wall being received between said jaws. The jaw 39 is formed, by reversely bending the metal "of said clip at 4:1 for forming the reversely extending plies 4L2, 43, thereof, the ply 42 extending from the attaching plate at the bend 44in the-metal sheet. The jaws are connected together by a rounding 15 of the metal, forming a spring between the jaws for normally urging the same toward each other, a
