My present invention has reference to a mausoleum designed to provide a monument to perpetuate the memory of the de parted.
An object is the provision of a mausoleum constructed of concrete sections, polished or otherwise treated to present a highly orna mental, stately and refined but unostentatious monument that shall provide a befitting memorial for the dead. i
A further object is the provision of a mausoleum that is constructed of sections which provide a tomb for the casket of a deceased person and which sections while effectively sealed together have means for admitting outside air into the tomb without permitting the entrance of dirt, insects, etc., thereinto, and whereby the air pressure in the tomb is equal to the outside pressure of the air so that the casket will be thus effectively and indefinitely preserved.
EL further object is the provision of a mausoleum that comprises a concrete base designed to be arranged upon the ground surface of a burial ground, and which base is provided with a metal compartment that is normally closed by a door, the said compartment providing for the reception of tools employed in a graveyard, while resting on the base and securely atlixed thereto there is the hollow body portion of the improvement, the latter, however, being provided with a base having upsta'nding lugs on which the casket rests, the body being Closed by a sealing slab, while restingon and secured to these members there is the ornamental top slab of the improvement, there being air conducting passages between the base, the body and the top that are suitably screened to prevent the passage of dirt, insects and the like through such passages, all of the constructions being of a highly ornamental but of unostentatious appearance.
A still further object is the provision of a mausoleum in which any desired number of casket containing bodies may be superimposed one over the other so that the several deceased members of a family may repose in the tombs thus provided by the mausoleum.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification, it being understood that the invention is not to be confined to the precise showing of the drawings, and that the same may be changed or modied so long as such changes and modifications mark vno material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.

Preferably the base member or slab of my improvement is cast or molded at the place where the mausoleum is to be erected, while the remainder of the construction is cast in a suitable plant or factory and shipped there from. The improvement .is wholly con* structed of concrete, except for certain parts which will be referred to in this descrip# tion. All of the concrete parts of the improvement have their outer faces rubbed and polished to present smooth white surfaces and, if desired, these exposed surfaces may be marbleized.
The base l comprises a substantially rectangular member, that is the slab is centrally formed with an opening therethrough, and the outer edges of the base are formed with an ogee molding or otherwise ornamentally shaped. The vertical air conducting passages 24 are closed or sealed when the cap slab is arranged on the body 8. The passages 24 on the sides of the body communicate with angle passages 24 in the cap slab 22. The passages 24 establish a communication between the chamber 23 in the cap slab, and the entrance of air into the cap slab prevents the sweating thereof and preserves the slab. `In addition to the central and side passages 24 the body 8 is provided with corner air conducting passages 28 that establish communications between the hollovs7 base and angle passsages 28 in the cap slab 22. The passages 24 and 28 have arranged therein screens 29 similar to those previously described, and all of the air conducting passages in the body have like screens 30 arranged therein. By this arrangement it will be seen that air will freely circulate between the base, the hollow cap slab and enter the body 8 so that the air will circulate around the casket.
It is within the province of this invention and my intention to produce a mausoleum that shall provide tombs for a numbery of deceased persons in a family orV for the relatives of the family and, therefore, in Figures 8 and 9 of the drawings, I have shown a number of bodies similar to the body 8 arranged in superimposed relation, that is, one on the other. In this showing the base slab 3l is substantially similar in construction to the base slab l, except that the `said base slab 8l has a top portion 32 provided with upstanding transverse ribs The body 84 that rests on the base has a depending continuous tongue that is received in a continuous groove 36 in the top of the base. rlhese interengaging parts are connectedY together by a sealing cement 37. The superimposed body 38 has a continuous depending tongue 89 received in a continuous groove 40 in the top of the substantially rectangular body 34. It is to be noted that neither of the bodies 84 and 88 are provided with bottom walls but each of these bodies has a `continuons inner depression at its upper edge, the inner orl side wall of which being arranged at an angle. In each of these depressions there is seated a sealing slab 4I. The slabs 4l are sealed in the grooves by plastic cement 42. 'Ihe sealing slabs 41 `in this instance are provided with upstanding transversely arranged ribs 43 having curved openings therethrough which enter the body as indicated by the numerals 44. These openings provide the ribs 43 with hand holds or grips and the said ribs serve as supports for caskets 45. The cap slab 46 is provided with a continuous tongue 47 that is received in the continuous groove in the upper or outer face of the body 38, the
tongue being secured in the groove by a plastic cement 48. The body members 34 and 38 have aligning central and vside `vertical air conducting openings 49 aifording air passages and these passages communicate with passages 50 in the top 82 of the hollow base slab 8l, and the end passages are closed by the cap slab while the side passages communicate with angle passages 52 in the said cap slab. rThe vertical passages 49 in the body members 34 and 38 are intercepted by transverse passages rlA that communicate with the interior or tombs of the bodies. The bodyA members 34 and 38 are also provided with corner air conducting passages that communicate with the angle air conducting passages 52 in the cap slab 46 and that connnunicate with .the hollow inner face 58 of the said cap slab 45. In the openings 52 there are screens 54 similar to the screens previously described and likewise in the lateral or angle passages 5l there are similar screens Also in the passages 50 there are like screens 56. These screens, of course, are toV prevent the ent ance of insects or eX- traneous matter into the tombs or into the hollow portion of the cap slab. Of course, the construction just described is polished and brightened or otherwise ornamented, the same being formed with the beads or molds substantially similar to those previously described. Iiikewise the sides and `edges of the body members 34 and 88 are depressed to form panels and name plates are removably secured in certain of these panels. l/Vhile not shown in the drawings, the hollow base is provided with an inlet opening in which there is arranged a casing similar to the casing 3, the said casingbeing, of course, closed by a hinged door which is normally locked.
It is believed that the foregoing description, when carefully read in connection with the accompanying drawings will fully set forth my construction and the advantages thereof to those skilled in the art to which such invention relates so that further detailed description will not be required.
While I have illustrated and set forth that a single casket is arranged in each tomb of the mausoleum, it is, of course, to be understood that the mausoleums may be of such widths as to accommodate two or more cas kets in each tomb thereof. Also it is to be understood that all parts of the mausoleum and base may be constructed of other material than concrete, that is to say, the same may be formed of cement, clay products, marble, metal, etc., either polished or unpolished. Further all parts constituting the mausoleum may be constructed at the place where the mausoleum is to to be erected or at a factory or like place of manufacture or erection from which place the slabs and foundation could be turned out in uniform niolds by the parties east-ingrthe, mausoleum and' shipped: for prompt delivery at the place where. the mausoleum isstol be erected.
