Application filed lane 4, 1924, Serial No. 717,844, and in Great Britain Italy 20, 1923. Y
Th s invention relates to'a razor stropp-ing device, its primary object being to Provide an improved stropping device of simple, durable and efiicacious constructioinflwhich also has the advantage that itcannot be 0perated it the blade tobe stropped therein is not secured in the correct position, risk of damage by'incorrect operation being thereby eliminated andthe general convenience of the device greatly enhanced. The improved stropper is particularly advantageous for use with razors in which the blade projects or may project at about a right angle to the handle and be sufiiciently exposed to'pr'oject between a pair of rolls to sharpen the opposite sides of the cutting edge, disinembering of the razor being thus unnecessary when sharpening the blade. 7 v i i w With this object in view, the stropper according to the invention comprises essen tially a casing in which is a slidable-carrier carrying rotatable sharpening rolls which by simple manipulatory to and fro motion imparted to an operating knob as is usual, are adapted to be moved into contact with the blade to be sharpened alternatelyon opposite sides and are also rotated soasto strop same, the-blade being held stationary in the casing so as to project between the i, A
through longitudinal slots, in thecarrier 3 .and casing 1 ,to the'outside of thellatter The rolls in each pair are geared by similar flexible bands 14:, and. it is. evident thatif the knob 13 is reciprocated relatively tolcarrior 3, the'ro-lls rot-atetogether in anoppostropping rolls in which position it is adapted to be locked, and means arealso provided whereby the carrier is automatically locked it the blade is unlocked. j i
The invention also resides in the construction and combination of parts, hereinafter described with referenceto the accompanying drawings, and more specifically pointed out in the appendedclaims. V I
In the drawing, Fig. .1 1s a plan VlQW of 4 cording to the invention, Fig. 2:isa sectional elevation taken on line IIII.of Fig. 1 the position of the razor being indicated byfdotted lines, Fig. 3 isan end sectional View taken on line IIIIII ofFig. 2,,the lidbeing shown closed, and Fig. 4c is a rear elevation of a portion ofthedevice. p
The apparatus comprises an outer protective casing 1 having a hinged lid 2, and longitudinally slidable Within the casing 1 is a frame or carrier 3 in which are rotatably mounted pairs of stropping rolls 5, 5 and 6, 6. The pairs of rolls are arranged one at each end of the frame, and are intended for fine and coarse stropping respectively. The stropping surfaces are preferably helically 'quence to this invention. idle portion 8, aslndicated in Fig. 2, is aperthe preferred form of stropping device ac-.

The razor is-adapted to be firmly secured in this position forstropping by means hereinafter descr bed, a ,The stropping device is driven, by means of 1 a spring cable or other flexible driving means 12 passing around one roll; of each-pa1r and secured to an operatmgknobjlS. passing site direction alternately witheach stroke.
But the device is so constructed in-practice,
effecting a stropping of one side of the blade. Upon reversing the movement of knob 13 the carrier immediately moves to press the o0- adjacent stropping roll against the other side of the blade, the rolls then rotate, and stropping of this side is effected. The stropping action continues as long as knob 13 is recip- @taly the vice l-AL razor stropping ap ing a casing, a carrier slide Iy moon hreciprocating movement"vyithin said casing, "spaced stropping rolls rotatably mounted on thecarrier, means for-mounting a; zor

be held very rigidly inposition during str opping, or the appliances are liable to be damaged, and to prevent the latter, as also to aflord greater convenience simplicity in mounting theruor in the stropper, the rpalionceis so devised that the ram: is
loc
ed in position upon shutting the lid of the casing, but ifthe lid is opened, thus releasing theranor, the carrier isautomatical- 1y locked in a medial position. Theuralor can thus be easilyremoved or replaced and there is no possibility of: inadvertent incormet ration For this purpose, blade spring 17 is mounted in casing 1', the freeend of said spring engaging a fork 18 on carrier 3 and always tending toretain same in a medial Alspring 19 is also secured withm the casing 1, its upper endbeing formed is a detent cute-i120 to engage! lip 24 on the lid E ihen closed, as shown in Fig. 3,
in which poeitionthe springl!) is pressed back clear of two in'wardly pro" ing lugs 21 formed onthecarrier 1; If the lid is opened however, as is eflected by pressing a button extending through the casing wall, the spring 19' canthen lie closer to the side of the casing, whereupon it will 35 lockingmember for the carrier 3, and hold g ge betweenlugs 23nd so constitute a same rigidly in a medial position-until such time it asthe lid is again closed; The lidQ carries a stron leaf spring 23 which on closing the lid is adapted to bear upon the razor or handleportion 8 and so hold same ri ly in lace during stropping. Incidenrovides" a] convenient arrangement for sa ely transporting the razor andstropper. i

liance com risfor stationary within said casing in such po- 7 sitionthatthe razor blade may projectbetween saidrolls, means for locking the razor in said position, mnnipulatory means for importing reciprocating motion-to the carrier to bring first one roll and then another intocontuct with the razorblade andfwhich alternately rotates the rolls in an opposite direction for each stroke, and means for locking the carrier against reciprocating movement associated with the aforesaid V razor locking means so that upon unlocking It is to be observe razor the latterthe carrier is automatically locked.
2. A razor stropping ap liance comprisingia easing, a. carrier slide 1y mounted for reciprocating movement within said casing,
spaced strapping rolls rotatably mounted on the carrier means for mounting a razor 'within mid casing so that theblade thereof stroke, resilient means tending to retain the carrier in a medial position with the rolls out of contact with the razor blade, a lid for the casingadapted to lock the razor in position therein when closed, and detent means associated with the carrier and with the lid when closed for locking the carrier against reciprocation when the lid isopen but not when the lid is closed.
A razor strapping appliance for razors wherein the blade is exposed and secured at about a right angle to the handle, comprising a casing, a razor support situated transversely of and midway between the ends 0% the casing, a slidable carrier within the aforesaid easing, two pairs of spaced streppin-g rolls journalled in and carried by the two pairs of rolls, a manipulating handle connected to said last mentioned endless band and and having frictional connection with the aforesaid sliding casing, razor retaining pm at each end of the outer pro- Blidable carrier, endless flexible bands op cling "Sing to geably hold the razor with its blade projecting between the rolls of one or the other pair, resilient means tending to retain the carrier in a medial position with the rolls out of contact with the ing, a combined spring-catch, and carrier locking member on one wallet said outer casing, a catch on said lid to co-operate with said combined catch and locking member,
and razor retaining spring on said lid, all
substantially for the purpose, and adapted to operate as hereinbefore set forth.
