4 Claims.
This invention relates to devices for sharpening safety razor blades of the double edge type.
Broadly, the invention comprises a support in which a strop is slidably mounted so as to be reciprocated under a double edge razor blade mounted to rock on said support directly above and in contact with the strop. In prior devices of this character, the razor blade is mounted in some kind of irreversible holder requiring the 1G operator to remove the razor from its holder for the purpose of reversing it in said holder in order to securea proper stropping operation of the razor on each side ofthe cutting edges.
The main object of this invention is to provide a stropping deviceY in which the holder for the blade may be reversed, Without removal of the razor blade, in order to adapt the device for stropping the cutting edges of the blade on each side.
Another object of the invention is to provide a strop holder in devices oi the character referred to lwith rollers at each end of the stropper to prevent the strop from coming into contact with the blade at such angles as to render the strop 25 liable to be out orsevered.
A further object of the invention is to provide a strop support in devices of this character with rollers designed to keep the strop and blade in alignment so as to impart the proper angle between the blade cutting surface and the strop itself.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent as the detailed description thereof proceeds.

K As shown in the drawing, Vthe invention comprises a handle 1 having areduced and externally screwthreaded end 2 detachably secured in the internally screwthreaded boss 3 extending centrally from the bottom of a supporting plate 4.
k155 The plate 4 is upturned at its opposite ends to form standards 5 and 6 provided with suitable journal bearings for the trunnions 'l and 8 respectively of a roller member 9. The member 9 is reduced'at the end nearest the trunnion 8 to receive a pinion 10 adapted to mesh with a pinion 11 rigidly secured to one end of a plate 12 which forms one of a pair of clamping plates adapted to receive and hold a razor blade 13. The plate 12 is provided at the end opposite the pinion 11 with an extension 14.
l To cooperate with the plate 12 in clamping the blade, a second plate 15 is pivoted to the plate 12 at the end thereof nearest the pinion 11. To effect the pivotal connection between the plates 12 and 15, the plate 12 has lugs 16 and 17 turned 70? up at right angles to thev plane of the plate 12 and quite close to the pinion 11 (see Figure 6). One end of the plate 15 is extended to provide projections 18k and 19 fitting between the lugs 16 andA 1'7; and pivoted thereto by a pin passed 75" through suitable registering apertures formed in the lugs 16 and 17 and the projections 18 and 19.
The free end of the plate 15 is provided with an extension 20 similar .to the extension 14 on the plate 12; and the outer ends ofthe extensions A: and 20 are ared outwardly from each other, as shown in Figure 3, to permit the user to insert his thumb in the notch 21 for the purpose of separating the plates 12 and 15 from each other whenever it becomes necessaryy to insert or remove a razor blade from the clamp formed by the plates 12 and 15. l
To position the razor blade properly between the clamping blades 12 and 15, theV plate 12 is provided on the facev adjacent the plate 15 with a pair of studs 22 and 23 adapted to seat in apertures 24 and 25, respectively, formed in the plate 15. These studs 22 and 23 are spaced apart to correspond with the spacing of the stud receiving apertures formed inv the blades adapted to be sharpened by this device. When the plates 12 and 15 are moved into blade clamping position with the extensions 14 and 20 in contact with each other, these plates are held in such position by means of a spring strip 26 stamped Y100 outwardly from the plate` 15 and adapted to seat in an vaperture 27 correspondingly formed in the plate 12 near the extension 14. This strip 26 ts with friction fit in the aperture 2'7 so as to lock the plates 12 and 15 frictionally in clamp- 105 ing position. Y
In order to adapt the razor blade clamping holder for reversal, a stud 28 projects from the axis of the pinion 11 and has secured to the outer end thereof a ball 29 seated in a ball 110 socket 30. A slot 31 formed at the upper end of socket 30 receives the stud 28 whenever the clamping holder is swung toward or from the roller 9. The socket member 30 is provided with oppositely extending lugs 32 and 33 apertured to receive machine screws 34 and 35, respectively, for securing said member 30 to the standard 6 (see Figure 4). The upper edge of the standard 6 is provided with a slot 36 registering with slot 31 to receive the stud 28 and form a bearing for the aforesaid stud in said standard. It will be obvious that the socket member 30 must be positioned so that the pinion 11 will engage the pinion 10 of the razor blade holder 12-15 when the holder is in operative position as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3.
The standard 5 is provided at the center of its upper edge with a notch37 to receive the.
extensions 14 and 20 of the clamping plates 12 and 15, respectively, when the holder formed by these plates is located in the operative position shownin Figures 1 and 3. To lock the extensions rotatably in proper position in the notch 37, thestandard 5 near its upper end is provided with a slot 38 in which slides a pin 39 passing through and suitably secured to the leaves 40 and 41 oi a latch plate 42 slidably mounted onv the upper edge of the standard 5, and provided at its rear end with an operating lug 43. The leaves 40 and 41 are slotted lengthwise to provide recesses 44 and 45 adapted to slide over and form a bearing forthe extensions 14 and 20 of the plates 12 and 15.
The recesses 44 and 45` are made of such length as to permit the plate 42 to straddle the notch 37 `at the upper end of the standard 5 and to form a journal support for the trunnion formed by the extensions 14 and 20. It will be apparent that the clamping plate holder 12-.15 may be locked in operative position by sliding the plate42 across the .notch 37 to lock the extensions 14 and 20 rockably in position in the notch 37. Y f n The plate 4 is extended laterally in opposite directions from the standards y5 and 6 and has formed on opposite ends of these extensions the upwardly turned ` standards 46, 47, 48 and 49 suitably apertured to form journal bearings kfor the trunnions projecting from the opposite endsof the rollers 50 and 51, respectively. A ilexible strop 52 substantially equal in width to the distance between the pairs of standards 46, 47, 48 and 49 is passed between the aforesaid pairs of standards and under the rollers 50 and 5l. and also under the roller 9 which is pivoted at its opposite ends in the standards 5 and 6. 1n order to support the strop 52y solidly below the cutting edges of the razor V13 a pair of rollers 53 and 54 are rotatably mounted at their opposite ends in the standards 5 and 6, as clearly shown in Figure 2 oi the drawing.
The strop is provided at one end with a hoo 55 adapted to be detachably secured to any lixture; and near its other end is provided with a button 56 adapted to prevent accidental removal oi the strop from the blade `holding structure. It is contemplated that the strop nearv one end thereof shall be provided with a roughened surface, specially treated to form a hone, which may be used for coarse sharpening of the raaor without removing it from the strop, the other part of which may be used as an ordinary strop.

What I claim is:
1. A Sharpener for double edged razor blades comprising: a frame having three rollers rotatable thereon about spaced apart parallel axes, a flexible strop threaded over the outer rollers and under the middle roller, a holder for a double edged razor blade adapted to rock about an axis parallel to and directly over the middle roller, said blade holder being pivoted universally at one end to said frame to swing toward and from said middle roller, gears on said middle roller and holder meshing with each other only when the holder is positioned directly over and parallel to the axis oi the middle roller operable to rock said holder to elect stropping contact of the edges of said blade in alternation with said strop when the strop and frame are relatively reciprocated and means adjustable on said frame to lock said roller so positioned'.l l
2. A Sharpener for double Vedged razor blades comprising a frame having three rollers rotatable thereon about spaced apart parallel axes, a fiexible strop threaded over the outer rollers and under the middle roller, a gear xed to one end of the middle roller, a blade` holder universally pivoted at one end to said `frame to swing toward and away from said middle roller, a gear xed to said holder in position to mesh with the gear on the middle roller only when the holder is positioned directly over and parallel to the axis of the middle roller, and means for releasably locking said holder so positioned.
3. A Sharpener for double edged razor blades comprising: a frame having three rollers rotatable thereon about spaced apart parallel axes, a flexiblestrop threaded over the outer rollers and under the middle roller, a gear fixed to one end of the middle roller, a flat plate having one end pivcted universally at one end to said frame, av gear xed to said plate adapted to mesh with the gear on the middle roller only when the plate is positioned directly over and parallel to the axis of the middle roller, a second plate pivoted to the first named plate and adapted to clamp a double edged razor blade to the firstnamed plate, and means for yieldingly holdingsaid plates in blade clamping position.
4. A Sharpener for double edged razor blades comprising a frame having three rollers rotatable thereon' about spaced apart parallel axes, a flexible strop threaded over the outer rollers and under the middle roller, a gear iixed to one end of the middle roller, a flat plate having one end pivoted universally at one end to said frame, a gear fixed to said plate adapted to mesh with the gear on the middle roller only when the plate is positioned directly over and parallel-to the axis of the middle roller, means for clamping a double edged razorblade to said plate, and means for 145 releasably locking said holder so positioned.
