UNITEDSTATES rA'rsr orrics.
BARREL GRIP.
Application filed Novenibcr s, 1926. Serial No. 146,907;
The invention is a device for readily lifting drums, barrels or the like, which is adjustable and which may readily be hooked over the rim at the end of the barrel.
. The object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient device for readily litt ing barrels, drums or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device for readily lifting barrels, drums or the like, which may readily be hooked over the rim at the end of the barrel.
Another objert of the invention is to provide a device for readily lifting drums, barrels or the like, which is readily adjustable to different grips.
And a still further object ofthe invention is to provide a device for li tting or upending barrels or the like which is of a simple or economical construction.
With these ends in view the invention embodies, a lever having a hook on one side and another lever with a handle at its outer end pivotally and slidably attached to the said former lever, said levers being provided with means for readily adjusting them and holding them at different angles in relation to each other. W i
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the draw ings, wherein: j
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device.
Figure 2 is a side view of the device.
Figure 3 is a view showing the device as it would appear when starting to upend a drum.
Figure 4 is a view showing the position of.
the device with the drum upended.
In the drawings the device is shown as it would be made wherein numeral 1 indicates the handle, numeral 2 the base and numeral 3 the hook. The handle 1 may be made as shown with a lever 4 having a yoke 5 at one end and a handle 6 at the other. In the outer ends of the yoke are slotted openings 7 and at the base of the yoke is a projection 8, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2.
The lever 2 is made with a flat section 9 having a rib 10 and at one end are feet 11 which will engage the side of a drum or the like and at the other end of the lever is a sectionlQ upon which the hook 3 is formed and through which a pin 13 extends that also extends into the slots 7 of the handle 1. At the end of the section 12 are notches 14: and 15 into which the projection 8 may be placed further than the straight line position shown in Figure 2.
An opening 17 may be provided in the lever 2 to provide means by which the device may be hung upon a nail or the like. It is understood however that this opening may be placed in any other suitable position, or any other device ma y be provided to support the grip.
It is also understood that other changes may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of the invention, one OillWlilCll changes may be in the design of either of the levers, another may be in the design of the hook, another may be in the use of other means for pivotally attaching the levers to each other and still another may be.
in the. use of other means for holding the levers in relation to each other.
The construction will be readily understood from the foregoing description. To use the device it may be assembled as shown and when it is desired to lift a drum, or the like the device may be placed on the upper end of the drum, as shown in Figure H 3 with the projection 8 in the notch 14 and by pulling upward on the handle 6 the drum may readily be upended. It is also understood the handle may be used with the pro-' jection 8 in notch 15, as shown in Figure 4. Having thus fully described the invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a gripping device of the class described, a bar having a hook adjacent one end, apin extending through the bar adja-' cent the hook, the end formed on a radius from the center of the said pin, and having notches therein and an extension at one side, the other end of said bar extending considerably beyond the said hook and having two laterally extending arms forming feet, and another lever with a handle at one end and a yoke at the other pivotally attached loo cent the hook, and. means for adjustabiy holding the handle to the end of the said her, the opposite end of the said bar extending e considerable distance beyond the hook endadaptable to form aheaiing forthe end of the bar against an object gripped by it and the hook.
3. In a device of the class described, a her having a hook adjacent one end, said bar extending a considerable distance from the open side of said hook, a handle pivotany attached to the end of the her and adjacent the olosedside of the said hookgnlonns for limiting the movement of the said handle in one direction, and means for odjnstiably holding the handle in relation to the said bar.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures.
THOMAS F. WILSON.
