1.1, KNISLEY.
STOVE LIFTER.
APPLICATION FILED Nov. 20, m5.

IRA J. KNISLEY, OF COSMOPOLIS, WASHINGTON.
STOVE-LIFTER.
Application filed November 20, 1915.
vision of a lid lifter of this character where-' in the construction thereof is novel in form to assure the safe lifting of the lid from the stove.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a lid lifter of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in its purpose, strong, durable and inexpensive of manufacture.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lid lifter construct ed in accordance with the invention, showing by full lines one position of the heel and by dotted lines another position thereof; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of a stove lid showing the lifter applied.
Similar reference characters indicate cor responding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the stove lid lifter comprises a ferrule 5, in one end of which is fitted a handle 6, preferably made from wood, although the said ferrule and handle can be made from metal and integral with each other, while the opposite end of said ferrule is in the form of a downwardly curved widened portion providing a neck 7 having a. jaw or claw 8, which is upwardly curved, and has shoul- Specifieation of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1916.
Serial No. 62,589.
Mounted transversely in the neck 7 contiguous to the inner end of the claw or jaw 8 is a pivot 10 swingingly supporting a heel 11 which is formed with a bifurcation 12 to straddle the neck 7 which is flattened for a portion of its/length, the free ends of said heel 11 being formed with beveled faces 18 and 14 respectively. Provided in the neck 7 is a notch 15 to accommodate the end of the heel 11 when moved into said notch as is shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. When the stove lid lifter is used and the opening in the stove lid is of a small size the jaw or claw 8 of said lifter is inserted in the opening while the heel ll rests without the opening upon the outer upper face of the lid, thereby serving as a fulcrum for the lifter when removing the stove lid from the stove. Now when the opening in the stove lid is of a larger size with respect to the ordinary opening the heel 11 of the stove lid lifter is brought into a position as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing and also the heel 11 gravitates within the opening so that the free end of the heel will abut one wall of the opening in said lid while the claw or jaw 8 is engaged therein beneath the flange overhanging the same for a positive grip upon the stove lid to permit the raising thereof.
It will be apparent that the stove lid lifter is adaptable for use in raising store lids with different sized openings or holes therein for receiving the claw or jaw of the lifter.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A stove lid lifter comprising a single handle, a fixed claw projecting from one end thereof, a shoulder above and reai= wardly of the claw, and a gravity heel pivoted to the claw forwardly of the shoulder for movement with relation to said claw and adapted to engage the shoulder when in one position and also adapted to be inserted in an opening in a stove lid, with the claw in its other position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
