Graining-Roller No, 155,703, Patentedxulyzonas.'

WILLIAM H. BURNS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRAlNlNG-ROLLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,708, dated July 20, 1875; application filed March 29, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BURNS, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Graining-Roller, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved graining-roller, and Fig. 2 a top View of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide a painters graining-roller, by which panels of dit'erent sizes may be readily and conveniently grained in any imitation of wood or other style.
The invention consists of a movable shoulder of the roller below the flexible transferbelt that is stretched by suitable mechanism over shoulder and roller, for the purpose of adjusting the circumference of the roller, from shoulder edge to stationary roller edge, to the exact width or size ot' the panel.
In the drawing, A represents a roller, of any suitable material and size, for grainin g panels,
being provided with an immovable projecting shoulder, B, at one end, for entering with its edge into the corner of the panels, wainscoting, 8mo., which feature has heretofore been patented to me. Roller A turns freely by its central pivot-pins or shafts a in handle-frame C, while a movable shoulder, D, of triangular or oth er shape, swings by its radial side arms D on the saine roller-pivots along the circumference of the roller, being at its base or lower part concaved to conform to the shape of the same. The movable shoulder D is attached by set-screws b to the sides of roller A, and may be set to any point along the circumference of the same, for being adjusted to the size of any panel. The movable shoulder D is designed to enter exactly into that corner ot' the panel opposite the one entered by the immovable shoulder B, transmitting by a smooth flexible belt, E, formed of india-rubber or printers7 composition on canvas, cloth, leather, or of other suitable material, any desired graining to the panel. The ljexible transferf ring-belt E is stretched tightly around roller and shoulders by means ot' a crank, ratchet, and spring-pawl, in the usual manner, taking up the paint from a stereotyped or other transfer plate, and allowing the rapid and economical grainin'g of panels of dit't'erent sizes from corner to corner by one rotation ot' the roller.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improvement in painters7 grainingrollers, the combination, with a roller having a stationary projecting shoulder, ot' a movable shoulder for adjusting the stretched transmitting-belt to any width of panel, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
