'In the drawings I have shown my wrench as it would be constructed wherein numeral 1 indicates the stock of the wrench on which is the handle 2 and also thelower jaw 3. The upper jaw 1 which has a shank 5 on it is pivotally held to the stock 1 by the cap the plate :15 6 and held laterallyby the yoke 7.-
The stock has teeth8 on its upper edge which slope upward from the point 9 on one side to the point 10 on the other as shown. in Figure 3 and these teeth are engaged by teeth 11 on the lower edge of a ratchet 12 which is pivotally held in the cap 6. The ratchet is held; on a round pin 13 the front end of which is mounted in a. hole 141 and the rear end of which is held in a slot 15 by a key 16 and on the end of.
the shaft 13 is a projection 17 by which the ratchet may be rotated by the thumb or fore finger.
The key 16 13 a rectangular shaped piece 0 of material which extends across the cap behind the ratchet 12, under the shaft 13, and bears upon the upper side of the stock 1. This key is inserted from one side after the ratchet is in place and its outer edges are slightly p-eaned to hold it.
It will be seen that as the projection is rotated in a clockwise direction toward one side the ratchet 12 will rise out of the teeth 8 so that the cap 6 will be free to slide along the stock. A pin 18 with a spring 19 behind it is placed in a hole 20 so that the spring will hold the outer end of the pin againstthe rear end of the cap 6 and when in the position shown in Figure 1 it will engage a notch 21 in theend ofthe cap and hold the projection 17in the vertical position withthe teeth of the ratchet engaging the teeth of the stock; and when the projection is put to one side this pin will engage a notch 22 and hold the ratchet in such a position that the teethwill be out of en gagement with the teeth of the stock. It will. be seen that as the teeth oftheratchet move downward to engage. the teeth of the stock there will be a sliding engagement so that it will be impossible for the ends of the teeth of the ratchet to strike the tops of the teeth of the stock. This sliding engagement of the teeth of the ratchet with those of the stock will make it possible to set the wrench in any desired position with perfect ease. a 1
The cap 6 may be stamped from a fiat piece of material and pressed into the shape as shownin Figures 5, 6 and 7, with suitable dies. At the forward end may be ears 23 with holes 24 in them through which the pin 25 may be placed to pivotally. hold the shank of the upper jaw, and behind the ears is a hole 26 below which a partition 27 may be placed in which is the hole 141 thatsupports the forward end of the shaft 13. The partition 27 is held in the hole 26 by a projection which extends upward into the hole andthe lateral edges of the projection are slightly peaned as shown by the dotted lines in Figure 3; At the rear of the cap is a projection 28 which is bent downward to partially close the rear end of the cap and in this projection is the slot 15 and the notch 21. In the sides of the cap are square holes 29 into which the key 16 is placed to hold the shaft 13 up into the opening 15 and this key also takes the backward thrust of the ratchet 12. The sides of the cap extend downward and around the bottom of the stock and at the point at'which they meet they are beveled so that they may be welded together as shown at the point 30.
The forward end of the stock bevels downward from the teeth to the point 31 at the end. of the stock and on each side are projections 32' which extend outward a distance equal to the width of the side of the yoke 7.
The yoke 7 may be stamped from a flat piece of material and may have a projection 88 on it to which a'flat spring 34 may be riveted; and the sides ofthe yoke may fit over the sides of the stock and against the projections 32 and may be held to the stock by the rivets 35.
It will be understood that changes may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of the invention. One of which changes may be in the design of the cap as this may be made of any suitable design and the lower ends connected in any suitable manner, another may be in the design of the handle, as this may be of any suitable design or may be rounded so that a wooden handle may be used over it; and still another change may be in the shape or design of the jaws as these may be made with or without teeth and in any suitable design.
The construction will be readily understood from the foregoing description. To use the device it may be assembled as shown by placing the ratchet 12 inside of the cap through the opening at the rear, putting the end of the shaft 13 in the hole 11, and then raising the latch up into the slot 15. The pin 18 with the spring 19 on it may be placed in the hole 20 before the latch is placed in the cap or may be placed in at this time as may be desired. The key 16 may then be placed through the openings 29 which holds the ratchet in place. The V esa-s43 shank of the upper jaw may then be placed between the ears of the cap and held in place by the pin 25, however, before the shank is attached to the cap it should be placed through the yoke 7 and the cap should be placed onthe stock by raising the teeth of the latch as hereinbefore described. It will be seen that by twisting the latch by the projection 17 the cap and upper jaw may be readily moved from one position to another so that the wrench may be set to any desired position by sliding it backward or forward and snapping the latch either into or out ofengagement with-the teeth of the stock. i
Having thus fully described theinvention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V In the process of making a wrench cap, a flat rectangular shaped piece of material, said piece of material being adaptable to be bent to form an object with a top, two
sides and a bottom with the ends open with the exception of a projection that is bent downward from the upper rear edge, ears with holes in them extending from the forward edges of the said sides, in which the upper jaw of a wrench upon which the said cap may be placed, may be pivotally mount ed, said piece of material having an opening in the top adjacent the forward edge in which a partition may be held, other rectangular shaped openings in the central portion of the said sides and bottom, other openings similarly located adjacent the rear edge of the said sides in which a key may be placed for holding a ratchet in the said cap, and the said downwardly bent projection at the rear of the said cap having an opening therein through which the stem of the said ratchet may pass, the lower portion of the said cap being shaped to provide a longitudinal opening therethrough through which the stock of a wrench may pass.
