MODE OF HANGING WINDOW-'SASHES.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,559, dated February 3, 1857.

To all whom 'it may concer/n:

Be it known that I, VILLIAM vWEBSTER7 of Morrisania, in the county of estchester and State of New York, have invented an Improved Method in Attaching the Cords to Vindow-Sashes Without Removing them from Out of the Frame or Their Places; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which makes a part of this specication.

The nature of my improved method consists in making openings or holes into or through the face or exposed part of the sash sufficiently large to admitof the knot made in the end of the cord, and after the knot has been pressed into its place in the opening or hole I then cover over the knot and opening by a thin piece of metal or its equivalent, which may be made with a screw thread on its edge screwed into the opening or hole.

To enable those who are skilled 'in the manner of attaching cords to window sashes, I will refer them to the accompanying drawing which represents a face view of the frame A and sash B which are or can be made in any of the common ways. Y

C, C are the openings or holes (one being covered over) made in the face part of the sash; they can be made on the opposite side or entirely through if necessary.

D, D are the weights to which areV attached oneend of the cords E` E; the other end is put over the pulleys l", F, and down through the grooves (which are shown by the dotted lines Gr, G) into the openings or holes (C, (3,) (one not shown) which are made suiiiciently large to admit of a knot when made in the cord. After the knots have been put into the holes or whateverit may be to hold the cord from being pulled out of the sash I propose covering over the holes flush with the face oi" the sash.

In this manner of attaching cords or hanging the sash after the cords have been broken, it will be perceived can be done without removing the sash from the frame or out of its place, thereby avoiding taking out of the parting bead or strips, which after the frames have been painted several times is very diiiicult and tedious and so1netimes it is necessary to cut them loose to eX tricate them, which by my method or improvement it is entirely overcome.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The constructing of window sash with holes C, C on their inner face in connection with the holes and grooves G, G as in the manner herein described.
