EN FFICE.
SAMUEL P. LOOMIS, OF OHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING"MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,598, dated July 13, 1875; application filed April 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL P. Looms, of Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and in the State of Tennessee, harve invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVashing-llachines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a washing-machine, having a semicircular wash-box made plain on its internal face, havin gaseries of rubbers connected to flexible metallic bands placed between said box and a stationary semi-cylindrical rubber provided with slats, the flexible bands with their slats oscillating between the wash-box and stationary rubber, as hereinafter set forth.
A represents the wash-box, made semi-cylindrical, of wood, metal, or other suitable substance, plain on its internal surface. Upon the upper side of this box is placed a square wooden frame, B. L L represent the legs of the box set a suitable distance apart at the bottom, which, converging, meet at their upper ends. In said ends a suitable journal-box is formed. D represents an oscillating lever, one being placed upon each side of the box, and having trunnions or short journals, which rest in boxes at the upper end of the legs L. E E represent bars, which connect the outer end of the oscillating lever D. To these bars are connected, near their ends, but between the levers, two metallic straps, F F. Secured to these straps are a series of rubbing-bars, of the usual shape for washing-machines, being oval or round upon their rubbing-surfaces. H represents a stationary rubber, provided upon its convex surface with a series of rubbingslats, made in similar form to those upon the flexible strap F; This stationary rubber H is provided at each end with a square short shaft, which fits in square "ertical grooves in the inner sides of the wooden frame B. This stationary rubber H is not allowed to oscillate during the operation of the machine, but may rise and fall vertically, and accommodate itself to the bulk of the clothes between it and the straps upon the flexible surface.
The clothing to be washed is placed in the machine between the rubber H and the rubbers upon the flexible strap, and is washed by means of the friction produced by the oscillation of the levers I), and consequent oscillation of the flexible strap F with the other rubbers G.
It will be seen that by this arrangement of the flexible straps, if there be more clothing upon one side than upon the other of the stationary rubber H, the flexibility of the strap 1 will allow the rubbers G to accommodate themselves readily to the clothing, and produce equal pressure at all times upon either side, and upon the bottom of the rubber H.
The rubber H may be easily lifted from its position in the box, and thus the clothes may be readily removed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The flexible straps F, provided with rubbers G G, and operated by means of the lever D, when used in combination with the rubber H, provided with slats I, and having vertical adjustment, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of March, 1875.
SAMUEL P. LOOMIS. Witnesses: Guns. E. STIvERs, O. MYNDUSE.
