Patented July 13, 1875.

WILLARD H. HARVEY, OF KINGMAN, MAINE.
' IMPROVEMENT IN HOLDBACKQ.
Specification forming pat of Letters Patent No. 165,575, dated July 13, 1875; application filed June 7, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLARD H. HARVEY, ot' Kingman, in the county ot'Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holdbacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap'pert-ains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which is shown a side View of my invention.
My invention relates to that class of holdbacks for vehicle-shafts which enable the holdback-strap to he slipped easily into place when the horse is being harnessed, and which offer no obstacle to the passage of the horse from the shafts while being unharnessed or in case of an accident.
My device is simple, and will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which a shows a shaft. b shows a standard placed thereon and provided with a brace, c. This standard receives the strain of the vehicle, as the ordinary holdback. Across its top, and
pivoted thereto at (1, extends an arm, 0, curved at one end toward the shaft to keep the holdback-strap in position, and provided with a fork at the other end passing around a second standard, f, upon which is placed a spiral spring, g, surrounding" it and pressing upward against the end of the arm 6, which is retained in position by a shoulder upon the post f, or by the projection of its brace h. The spiral spring, pressing up upon one end of the arm 0, serves to keep its other and free end in position to retain the holdback-strap in place, but allows it to rise, when necessary, to insert the strap, or to allow it to escape.
What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the standards I; f, spiral spring g, and forked arm 6 pivoted to said standard I) at d, all operating as set forth, for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of May, 1875.
WILLARD H. HARVEY.
