G. L. HYDORN.
' HOLDBAGK FOR VEHICLES. I No.413,184 v Patented O0t.22,1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. HYDORN, OF LACONA, NEW YORK.
HOLDBA'CK FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,184, dated October 22, 1889.
Application filed June 6, 1889. Serial No. 313,278- (No model.)
elevation.
My invention relates to the construction of holdbacks designed to be permanently secured upon the thills and designed to receive the holdback-strap.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient holdback constructed of wire and adapted to receive the holdbackstrap and hold it securely, and from which a strap can be readily released whenever desired, and which will release the strap automatically whenever the strain thereon is reversed.
My invention consists of the several novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the claim annexed.
It is constructed as follows: A representsa portion of the thill, and B is the vholdback. This holdback is constructed from a single piece of Wire bent centrally to form the angle 1, then curved outward, as at 2, then bent to form the shoulder3, then bent again to form a straight portion 4, the arms from the shoulder 3 converging to and forming at their inner ends an eye 5 to receive a screw6; and 7 is a washer-plate fitting over the arms 8 and held by a screw, as shown in the drawings.
The wire used is spring-wire, and when the arms 8 are secured upon the thill or be neath it a spring-tension is created, causing the front end or angle 1 to press closely against the thill. To introduce the strap, I spring the point 1 away from the thills a sufficient distance to admit the strap, which slides back against the shoulder 3, and this shoulder 3 re ceives the strain upon the holdback, and
whenever the strain is reversed such strain will draw the strap out through under the point and release the holdback-strap from the thill.
\Vhat I claim is A holdback constructed from a single piece of wire bent to form a point 1, thence curved outwardly, thence bent to form a shoulder 3, thence extending back, and a cross-bar across the arms adjacent to the shoulder secured by a screw, and a screw through the eye upon the rear end of the arms, in combination, as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto-set my,
hand this 22d day of May, 1889.
GEORGE L. HYDORN.
