The invention relates in general to a mechanical toy of the type which is made up to simulate an animal and specifically the invention relatesk to a wheel supported toy resembling a grotesque form of duck.
The object or" the invention is to provide a simple formk oitl toy of the type outlined which will haver a grotesque and unusual movement of the tail either with or without y a conventional noddingv movement of the Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of a toyv constituting a speciiic embodiment of the invention with parts brokenaway to show internal construction and showing in full and dotted lines the two kextreme positions of the head and tail; and n Fig. 2 is a plan view looking down upon the structure shown in Figul.
In the drawing there is shown a body portion 10 formed of side boards 11 and 12 and a back 13. The toy is conventionally supported on wheels 14, the axle 111of the front pair" being provided with a crank 15. Pivotally mounted on a vpin 16 is a head 17, the head yportion includes rearwardly exn tending portion 18 which is positioned between the side boards and the back 13. i 4o At the Vrear of the figure is a tail 1.9, the
upper rear portion 20 of which is exposed beyond the outline of the bodyfportion and the inner part 21 is concealed within the lines of the body portion. f
Instead of the usualpivotal mounting ot' the tail in similar devices of this character, |it is intended that the tail be mounted so that it will have reciprocatory movement into and out of the body portion so thatthe amount of tail exposed variesk from time to time as the toyk is drawn along'the ground.
It is preferable to have this tail action work f in synchronism with the head movement so as to enhance the grotesque actionof the figure and for this purpose-the "tail yis pivotally connected by pin 22 to the rear end of the extension 18. The tail is guided inA its reciprocatory movement between an undercut beveled guidingsurface 23 -detining the rear end of the back 13, on the underside the tail is supported so as to ride over a pin 24 and which pin acts additionally to secure the rear ends of the side boards. A reach rod 25 is pivotally connected at its rear upper end to the underside of the extension 18 and at itsV forward end to the crank 15. The toy is drawn along the ground by means of a draft member 26.
AsV the toy is drawn along the ground, the turning wheels will actuate the crankL and this .in turn will cause the head portion to oscillate or nod about the fulcrum provided by the pin 16. At the same time the headl will acton the tail to drawn the same from the extended full line position shown in Fig. 1 into a retracted dotted line position shown in this figure. Vith the relative arrangement of the parts illustrated, the tail will be drawn in as the head is elevated or moved back and as the head moves down and for- Having vthus described my invention, VI v claim l. A wheeled toy simulating a' grotesque Vform of duck and including a body portion, a headpivotally mounted to the body kporconcealed by the bodyportion, means forV mounting the tail to have bodily movement into and out of the body portion thereby to vary the extent of tail projecting outor` the body portion, a` pivotal connection between the Vrearwardly extending portion of the head and the concealed portion of the tail, a wheel supportfor the toy,"and mechanism includying a crank driven'bv the wheell support for actuating the head and tail in synchronism as the toy is moved along the ground.
